Fanfiction Sucks

So far I have:
Clan vs Clan revenge plot
Darkspawn Massacare
Honor and Shame, family/duel plot
and Sacrificial lamb/crime plot.
All have merit but the problem is the two that give a good reason to join the wardens are hard to form, while the two more complex ones are really going to stretch the origin out.
So far writing an entire life story for Sigvard and grum (his wolf) is more fun than playing go figure. Now I am trying to see if the story works better from Sigvard's POV or multiple POV's. Also adding a HNF so far is really giving me ideas.
This stuff is addictive I can see why people do it so much. Although Fanfiction.net is not let me make an account so I will try later.

She really was the worst. When I saw the broodmother achievement for Awakening I wanted to cry. The relief at not having to fight all of them head on was unbelieveable. The archdemon was cake in compairson. (and I was most disturbed whe Ruck basically flirted with my Warden in a very creepy way.)jenncgf wrote...

Was anybody else totally creeped out when Rukh told them he could see the corruption in them or however he phrased it? Between Rukh and Hespith, I found the Deep Roads the most disturbing part of the game.
Oh, man. The broodmother was the scariest monster for me in the whole game. Dragons were NOTHING compared to her.
@giggles- there's always archive of our own, it's more stable. (I just hate their upload system compared to ff.net)

Laid back, sarcastic, loyal, smart yet goofy, but with a temper (Berserker).
I am writing him somewhat like I am. He is laid back but has a line the makes him snap.

Yes, I think Grey Wardens can sense each other too. I'm pretty sure it's never been confirmed by devs...I just passed my copy of the Calling on to someone else so I can't check for you, but that's always been my take on it.
Also, I got a facepalm-inducing review today where someone complained at how I 'betrayed' Alistair in a one-shot by not killing his father-in-law. 'Oh yeah, your story was really funny...until you betrayed Alistair! But...he's so nice! He doesn't deserve it!' Honestly...
Edit: To make matters worse, in the one-shot Anora won't agree to marry Alistair unless if a way to save her father comes up, the Warden takes it. Is it 'betraying' Alistair to think he'd do a better job if ruling with Anora now?

I like DA's setting though, and have it mostly roughed out (starting this weekend).

He doesn't say anything about that - he says he recognizes you from Duncan's recruitment list. So he might sense the taint in you, I would bet he does, which might even be why he takes the chance in killing the guard then (what would be the point if it was another guard entering the dungeon?) but he doesn't explicitly say that he does.

Hi! Another new kid jumping aboard the fanfiction thread. Seems to be a lot of that lately.
Gearing back towards the sensing taint discussion, was there ever any mention of how wide a range that encompassed? I know Alistair tells you in the Korcari Wilds that if the darkspawn are nearby, he'd be able to sense it. But I wonder from how far away that is, roughly?
My other question is how have you guys been handling the traveling issue? Practically everyone is riding horses in the prequel books, so obviously Fereldan had them at some point. And I understand they aren't in the game itself due to how complicated/expensive their animation is. And if you recruit Loghain and ask him what he wants, he talks about wanting to ride (not walk) back to Denerim and find no empty seats in the war room, yadda yadda yadda. So, do we assume we actually ride horses from location to location off-screen? Does the group just not choose to use them because they wouldn't suit everybody (I'm looking at you, Oghren)? Or do we just presume horses can sense an oncoming Blight and they flee? Actually, that thought would fit why Grey Wardens always rode griffons... the horses evacuated!
Hmmm, reminds me of the dolphins from "Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy." I can almost see my author's notes now...
"Fereldan's 'bout to be destroyed
Denerim's gonna be a chew toy
For the Archdemon and its darkspawn boys
So long, so long, and thanks for all the hay..."

Maybe if you're playing, say, an elf or a dwarf but what if you're a Cousland? Does he also describe you in freakish detail for his list that he can instantly recognize you, just another human in the Arl's estate, as Duncan's old recruit? He probably realizes you're a GW by sensing it and connects the dots based on what Duncan told him.Sandtigress wrote...

Nope. If you romance Zevran but don't sleep with him and he gives you the massage offer, he starts off saying you look tired and he knows just what you need. One of the answers you can give is a horse. Besides, where would you have gotten a horse from, anyway? Or sevreal horses? So, do we assume we actually ride horses from location to location off-screen?

Hello and WELCOME. There is a great thread in the Alistair fan group about distances in Ferelden that might help you - I'm not sure if you're allowed to view it if you aren't a member but it's here.
As far as the horse issue goes, I stepped around the issue by saying that darkspawn like to eat them, but according to David Gaider darkspawn don't eat. Maybe the horses go crazy in the presence of the taint so Grey Wardens can't ride them? That's why they had to ride griffons? Just speculation.

re: sensing Taint. I also assumed Riordan 'sensed' that the PC was a GW, but there's never any explanation as to how far the sense works. There are suggestions the senses are stronger with age. Riordan went towards Ostagar as well and said he he got 'close enough to listen in' on the darkspawn, so some sort of range does seem to be required.
So yeah, my take (all completely unsupported by lore) is that Grey Wardens can sense one another via the taint, but factors such as distance and how 'strong' the taint is in either of them affects how far away they can be to feel one another's presence. It's also not 'personal', so if several are standing around together it's the concentration of taint that's sensed, not the individuals (although IMO they feel different to darkspawn and different to ghouls).

Wardens spooking horses isn't something I'd thought of either...I would have just assumed they rode griffins because they fly.

Yes I agree so hard with this and want to add:
I was inspired to write my fanfic in a way that I was not inspired to write anything in a long, long time. And it wasn't until I finished and wrote a one-shot sex-drugs-and-rock-n-roll elf thing that I became inspired to write my own stuff. (Lost the elves, kept everything else). And I still am making progress on my fanfic even though I've been working very hard on the novel (just crossed 25k words!) So it's not a zero-sum game. I think you just have to follow your muse and don't force it. The ideas will come when they're ready.

This is very good advice and pretty much is where I am at the moment. I've been working off-and-on with an original novel (aren't we all?
Not a bad thing. Fanfiction is a GREAT place for practice. Practice different tones and writing styles. Practice different ways of conveying information. Then you feed it to the public and a) don't have to worry about someone stealing your original works and
But at the moment, my muse is really tempting me down the fanfic path for a bit. Loghain is calling to me, and the fact that sooo many people cannot see a city elf forgiving him for his sins is simply a challenge to me to find a sensible, heartfelt work-around.

fanfic is good practice, but don't let yourself be limited by this universe's rules, and don't depend too much on someone else's established ideas
How about you just let people enjoy themselves. Not everybody is doing this because they want to make something of it. Some people just want to write for fun and share it with an enthusiastic audience.

Working within Setting, a hundred times the complexity! May make fic over done, may make it even sillier! Much worse!
I cant wait for the weekend so I can write it out, I only have one person to send the rough to. If anyone is interested PM me. Should be done by Sunday night.

Mechu Tengu, why not go write your own instead of hanging out here telling those of us who are practicing our arpeggios to write something else? You can follow your own advice instead of commenting here.
