fanfic is good practice, but don't let yourself be limited by this universe's rules, and don't depend too much on someone else's established ideas

How about you just let people enjoy themselves. Not everybody is doing this because they want to make something of it. Some people just want to write for fun and share it with an enthusiastic audience.

True that.  So what if someone wants to write within the DA universe?  The whole idea of fanfiction imho is to have fun and not be judged by judgy judgers who like to judge and backseat drive.

re: horses, one of the party members (Leliana I think) makes a comment like "If we were in Orlais perhaps" when you say something about wanting a horse. I forget the exact line, but between that and Zevran I got the impression that Ferelden didn't even have horses (even if it was being used to explain an art/animation cut). Not in large numbers, anyway, and I'd never read the books so...

OTOH, Alistair slept in the stables.  I'm guessing they're there, but a super hoity-toity sort of special thing that only an arl or a very wealthy bann might have.

There's some bit of discussion mentioning horses when you talk about halla with their Dalish handler -- the horses are made to sound as casual animal that pulls carts and such, so i don't think they're any rarer in Ferelden than they are outside of it.

Also on breaking the 4th wall side, David Gaider mentioned the charge at Ostagar was supposed to be done by cavalry. It was skipped eventually since the horses never made it into the game.

Ok here's my little theory re: horses

So the Orlesians brought them with them when they got there, and when they pulled out they either took their horses with them, or slaughtered the ones they couldn't take out of spite. Ferelden is poor and can't afford to import breeding stock. The stables are used for oxen and donkeys.

This totally makes sense, guys, we should all just go with it.

Corker: I forgot that bit about Alistair. Hmm...

tmp7704: I saw that bit from Gaider, but forgot the halla part as well.

Rage: Heh, I went the route that Fereldens snubbed horses (as mounts) as a point of national pride after the war with Orlais, since mabari can take armed knights straight out of the saddle. :)

And I made up my own Ferelden horses smart as mabari called Cefylls. I simply made them small in number as the Orlesian occupation had them almost extinct as they were battle horses, not like the Orlesian Chevals who are regular horse smart and don't mind pulling carts. My own way around that little lack of horses issue.

Ah, the old Scorched Earth policy ... every history student should know this (speaking as a history teacher).

I can see this being the case after the end of the Orlesian occupation.  I can also see that it would take time for the horse stock within Ferelden being built back up again after such a disaster, and that the animals might be strictly limited to the nobility.  However, at the beginning of Origins, it's almost 30 years after the departure of the Orlesians.  Certainly some inroads should have been made by this point into either importing and/or breeding the animals to provide the stock base for the rest of the country.  While they might not be completely back to where they were during the Occupation, there should be some rebounding.

Maybe a combination of theories, then? Orlesian jerkwadery+Fereldan stubborness=no horses thirty years later (when we could really REALLY use them)?

Oh, the canonical hoops we leap through to explain programming limitations.

Sooo, just started writing from Nate's POV. Got to say - liking it a LOT. Also makes writing Anders much more fun to not be in his head. I might have to become a Nate addict, if only to have his opinion of everyone else!

Points to Tasmen, I've based some of my Nate on yours because I think yours is the best.

Well, the Wardens wouldn't have any horses since any horses at Ostagar would have died there or run off and the only place you could really get horses until the Landsmeet would be Redcliffe which had just suffered a zombie apocalypse so perhaps that's what happened to Eamon's horses.

Now we just need blighted horses so the darkspawn can form their own cavalry.

I'm picturing WoW horses now.  Either undead horses or Warlock horsies with flaming nostrils and hooves.

Oh, crapola. My reviews have started disappearing too.

I keep my email notifications of them (am I sad? Yes I am) but I like having them all in the one place :(.

I also think that there are plenty of weeds noxious to horses growing in the fields of Ferelden so they have to be carefully stabled in order to prevent them from being poisoned. This is difficult to do (and expensive because they can't be just put out to graze) so what has tended to happen in the past is that nobles have imported a few horses from abroad, very expensive for Ferelden, but they have eventually come to grief due to the local flora before becoming a sustainable asset.

I've had one, too! Except I never got to see it and never received an email for it, but I have a story with a review count of "2" but only one can be viewed.

What do you guys do when you write something embarrassing but you don't realize its embarrassing until its already all over the internet? I think I'm just going to ride it like a mad bull and be all, "Deal with it."

Some of it's old info or unchanged from DA:O but there are a few new tidbits.

I think you've seen the piece that's making me face palm... as has about half the kmeme, probably, so no takebacks.  It's just so... completely ridiculous.  And it seemed like such a good idea at the time.

Going to just hop on top with my cowboy hat in the air, all, "yee-haw!", I guess.

Oh NICE! Same map as on the wiki but the added info is nice. I wish I could find a larger copy of it, some of the city names are so blurry I can barely read them.
