I love the Abhorsen books. One of the best realised worlds in fantasy in my opinion. Nix is awesome. All his worlds are really different.

Have you read the fourth? "Across the Wall"?  I'm a bit scared to.  I fear those "collection of story" books, thinking that I will be sorely disappointed because what I truly wanted was a continuation of the trilogy. :((

I read Across the Wall and they're fine for stories. But I'm the same, not a big fan of "stories in the universe" because I just want more of the characters :).

Gath Nix? Sounds like it could be a PC name. :D

Not familiar with his stuff. If it's that good though, I should try to find it. And the Stolen Throne too. I haven't been reading much lately, however...

Morning!! *Gasps* book conversations while I've been asleep!

@Miri1984 & weyrleader - Garth Nix/Abhorsen series is bloody fantastic. If 'Across the Wall' is good too, I'll definitely dip in. How exciting.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Suzanna Clarke is my favourite - I guess you can call it 'fantasy' - book and I can't recommend it enough. All my Pratchett books are in varying degrees of collapse because they're well thumbed but my favourites are the Granny Weatherwax ones and the Vimes ones really. I think I've fallen in love with Vimes a little.

But really, I prefer Sci-fi to fantasy. Iain M Banks and Neal Stephenson (his cyber-punk ones - Snow Crash and The Diamond Age) are my favourites there. All the Iain M Banks ones are just fantastic, but there is a *kind* of an order to reading them. If you want to dip in though, get the book 'Consider Phlebas' and read the chapter called 'Damage'. 'Matter' is good as a jumping off point too. His writing is so skillfully easy - and he's funny too.

Hooray for books and talking about them!! *beams*

The stress of her regard by Tim powers is awesome! Victorian poets + ancient demonic spirits = win!

Okay so my book list is getting longer, and I may need to start building a weatherproof shed for my books out in my backyard, or we may run out of room to live in the house, but keep the books and authors coming! *squees*

*raises hand* I have a confession to make. I am also a huge mystery story buff. westie can attest to that *waves at westiex9*. I love historical ones in particular set in ancient history, like Rome, Egypt, during the time of the Anasazi. If anyone else is a fan, I have some great recs. Or you can all point an laugh.

Tara, Prachett for the win. Granny Weatherwax is my favorite.

Lol I come back after a day away to see this. I Love Granny W but love Nanny Ogg even more - 'When shall we three meet again?'  'Well I can do next Tuesday?'

Love her bawdy songs and she has a great cat too! (And he made an interesting leather-clad pirate type as well :))

Nanny Ogg is my hero. She rocks.

I'm into sci-fi at the moment too. Went a bit nuts on amazon stupidly just before I bought Dragon Age so I have a shelf full of books that I haven't read yet. Greg Egan, Neal Stephenson (if you love his sci-fi, I think one of his best books is Zodiac, which is actually a book about environmentalists - extremely funny!) Ian M Banks (although I must admit I prefer his earlier novels to the new ones - The Player of Games is my favourite), CJ Cherryh (her fantasy is great as well) and Greg Bear. Neal Stephenson is probably my favourite sci fi writer of all time, although it was a big wrench to admit that I liked him more than Cherryh.

Oh, but when push comes to shove, Terry Pratchett is my one true love. I love all the books, but am desperately in love with Moist Von Lipwig. And Vimes :).

Ian M Banks.  Agreed the Player is the best but Use of Weapons is pretty good.  I think you do the later books a bit of disservice, the Algebraist is not to bad and I loved Matter especially for the ending...

Actually, yes. I think I just got shirty with him because of his non-sci-fi books. I really loved The Crow Road, The Wasp Factory and Complicity but after that he just got a bit annoying - or at least his main characters did :). And he always does such horrible things to women in them!

The Algabraist is fabulous I agree.

Okay, so no one lambasted me for my love of historical mysteries so here goes:

Mystery set in ancient America with the Ancient Puebloans, or as they are called in error Anasazi. The series flashes back and forth between them and the archeologists working on the dig, Along with some mysterious spooky supernatural stuff too. Written by an husband and wife team of archeologists this gives the series the reality along with the supernatural. Three books in total "The Visitant," "The Summoning God," "Bone Walker." Written by Kathleen O'Neal Gear and Michael Gear. Highly recommended. "TheSummoning God" is the first book it will suck you in from the first page.

ROFL! Thanks Ette! I didn't want to upset fantasy sci-fi only lovers. Though with this book loving crowd, I find it hard to believe anyone here wouldn't read just about anything.

Speaking of the first page...those are always the most challenging to write for me. So, you know - er you hope - the rest is just as good if the first page sucks you in.

Well with "The Summoning God," and all three books that follow, they are. And the series does not flag or get lost along the way. It really just stays fantastic from book one through book three. Some of the best books I have ever read. But I warn you there is gore and blood, and some parts are downright creepy.

...uhm, yeah.  Better warn those Dragon Age folks...it might make their ears blush.

I think that all of that is fine so long if it's not poorly written. And you wouldn't promote badly written material, right?

Well, I know no one here is used to blood splatter, um yeah. I always love when your group talks to someone covered in gore in game and no one bats an eyelash. LOL!

Gods no!  I hate dreck!  I would rather kiss Oghren than promote dreck!

So, I'm updating the sectioned chapters now...is it best to upload Word docs or just convert it all to the OpenOffice program?

Never mind...figured it out.  Had to fumble around a bit since it's been a while since I've updated things on FF.  Sigh.  :pinched:

Maybe I'm a sicko, but I always find it exceedingly entertaining to pick those moments to kiss Alistair if I'm in a romance with him.  Covered in blood?  Standing in front of broodmother?  Oh yeah baby, let's make out.

ROFL. Reminds me a bit of Baldur's Gate II, how the game would suddenly decide to have party members initiate conversations with you. On one run-through when I was romancing Anomen, he proposed to the PC in a dungeon over the corpse of a recently-slaughtered bone golem. Oh yeah, *romance*!

@Shadow - for some reason, that gives me a strange Pythonesque image of a knight kneeling down in offal, plighting his troth to his lady fair. *squelch*

See, it's stuff like that which always makes me smile :)

"Marry me baby?  And by the way, want a bone?"
