And if you'll notice the horses aren't performing mundane tasks. In fact, that bit about Alfstanna's family always giving a horse to the Ferelden monarch makes it sound quite a bit like a status symbol.

But they are; it's explicitly said humans use them for pulling carts, how more mundane can it get?

Alfstanna's family gifts a horse to the Ferelden monarch as symbolic gesture -- their ancestor shot the horse from under Calenhad and forced the would-be first king to wait outside their castle on foot to test his humility. It doesn't in itself make the horse valuable, in similar manner if the gesture was giving the king a nug to make up for eating one in the past wouldn't make the nug an extraordinary animal.

I think the nobleman would have them but when do you see nobleman? Ostagar? The horses died or fled. Redcliffe? If they're kept up anywhere near the castle then Connor's little army got to them. That's really not inventing elaborate excuses, I don't think.

As mentioned before, the Bannorn is just north of Lothering and spreads across half of the country; it's a jumble of minor lords, banns and freeholders, and the "backbone of Ferelden in terms of both agriculture and population". I'd imagine it's not too hard to find some horses there. Unless they're exceedingly rare but i don't think it's the case -- exceedinly rare animals tend to get used as symbol of status rather than for mundane tasks like pulling carts (something any ox can do and we do get to see these)

And if you'll notice the horses aren't performing mundane tasks. In fact, that bit about Alfstanna's family always giving a horse to the Ferelden monarch makes it sound quite a bit like a status symbol.

So much a status symbol, in fact, that Cailan himself didn't take his horse to the most ~GLORIOUS~ battle. Or maybe the bit about them not liking Darkspawn makes sense. I'm in the middle of a post-game fic and I decided that I wanted them to have horses, so there's a whole scene where my mage gets to see a horse for the first time and she's just bonkers-out-of-her-mind with excitement. Until she gets on it and discovers that horses don't really care for mages and gets thrown.

But really this is about the dumbest, nerdiest argument I've ever been involved in (and I've played Trivial Pursuit: Star Wars Edition). There's no horses on screen in the game. There's even dialogue discussion the lack of horses. There aren't horses that are available to you if you're writing a game fic. You have to skip your descriptions of the pretty pretty ponies. Oh well. There's plenty of other things to talk about.

There's lot of things which aren't in game. Like Denerim docks, for example. Sure, Isabela mentions them and Sten talks about them too, but that's like game dialogue about the horses -- you don't ever see one. The docks aren't on the city map; clearly they are not accessible to the player making the sea travel to anywhere impossible for them in general.

Oh well. There's plenty of other things to talk about.

Indeed, like the marvel that's the magically stretching "one size fits all" armour. Because it does happen in the game so it must be how the things in Thedas work.

(Eh, I named one of the rooms at the Pearl the 'Aretino.'  Obscure historical borrowing is fun!)

Anyone recall the name of that tale of Leliana's ... [female name] and her soldier? Can't find it on the wiki...

Oh, come now... we're all on a message board discussing the details of a video game and writing fic about it. I'm a proud member of the "Nerd Herd." Posted Image But I don't care about writing pretty, pretty horses... I was mostly curious about other people's thoughts because I'm thinking about it getting brought up in my fic dialogue, and I remembered horses (or lack thereof) getting mentioned in-game by some of the companions, and wanted to see if there had been any sort of agreed-upon "horse canon." There has not, so I'm down with that.

Another random question -- Loghain's lifespan if you make him a Grey Warden. Any definitive answer on this that I'm missing? I know when you become a Warden, Alistair says you've got about 30 years to live. So, that made me assume everyone gets about 30 years from their Joining (unless, of course, violent death takes you before your Calling). Thus, that made me assume Loghain -- who's about 50, right? -- wouldn't have to be too concerned about it because there's just as good a chance of him kicking off out of pure old age in his late 70's/early 80's before his Calling. But I've seen a few fics and a few people that think Loghain actually has significantly LESS than 30 years left, probably because he's Joining so late in life.

Is that backed by anything canon, that if you Join at a later age, the taint advances through your body more quickly? I've only just started to read "The Calling," so maybe this question is addressed there?

Well, in Loghain's epilogue when you US it says that 'several' years later he goes to his Calling. Would anyone really call three decades 'several'?

Yeah, I was under the impression that he would only live a few more years after the Blight, considering his epilogue if you take the DR.

In my story, he took his Calling ~4 years after the Blight. Now, it might have been because it was his time, or it might have been a decision he made to get the hell outta Orlais (and because he was ready to die at the Archdemon, anyway). Who really knows for certain?

Ah, okay. I've only done one play-through so far with a recruited Loghain, but I've not started the Final Battle on that character yet... so didn't know his codex updated with that info at endgame.

Thanks!

I could have sworn Riordan made a comment about Loghain's age and the joining.

I don't remember either way, but I figure there's a physiological aspect to it. One's body regenerates slower and slower the older you get, after, say, about the age of 25? 30? (once you're past your physical prime). So I figure an older person taking the joining wouldn't be able to live very long because they physically wouldn't be able to replace those cells destroyed by the poison that is darkspawn blood fast enough to survive another thirty years.

And there's the stamina aspect. No matter how fit you are, a fifty year old isn't likely to have the stamina of a twenty year old. Lack of energy == lack of energy to fight a poison spreading through the body.

I don't know if that's what would happen, but it sure seems interesting to me that it could be possible.

Just a side note, since we're talking about the taint and related subjects:

I was looking up certain infectious diseases (what can I say?  I'm an information hog) and I found out that one variant of smallpox, a particularly deadly one, has the same symptoms as the darkspawn corruption - high fever, loss of mental faculties, one's skin turning black, etc.  Why was I looking this up?  Oh, no reason.  It had NOTHING to do with my fanfic or anything.

Just thought it was interesting and thought I'd toss it out there.  You never know when this sort of info might come in handy  :D

Also, as anyone else addicted to reviews? Posted Image

Yes.  and yes.  I'm having a heck of a time filling between my inspired chapters and making them as interesting as I think my main focus points are.

REVIEWS FTW!  Man, those things are super motivational.    I never realized how uplifting it is to get feedback, even if it's just 'yay I like this'.  Whoulda thunk?

Are you talking about Aveline?  Oops, never mind.  I saw the correct answer after I posted this.

Is there a 12 step program?

Or do we care?

I don't care unless I don't get reviews for a particular chapter.  Then I:
a) rationalize it (ffnet sucks.  It must be broken!)
B) remind myself that I'm writing for me and not for approval from other people  (no really!  honest!  eh, who'm I kidding?)
c) read other peoples' work and review their work so they don't feel left out.  :D
d) take another 9 steps until I've gotten to the 12 steps of denial about why I didn't get a review that chapter.

Over the course of these twelve steps, five minutes has passed since I posted the chapter.  If I don't have a review (read FASTER DAMMIT!)    I start the steps over again.

Does that count as a 12 step program?

Mine is quite similar except trade PM Tasmen with PM Saga and add in stare at phone as if it is evil while I wait on it to vibrate and blink green letting me know 'YOU HAVE MAIL'.

Oh and lately I curse ffnet a lot and reload the review page since emails are lagging 2-3 hours behind for me.

Ah yes... THOSE 12 steps!

I figured the last chapter of Loved sucked royally since I never got a review. Turns out, ff.net ate it.
