I'm working on my next chapter and part of it is... dark. Potentially-triggering dark. I'm debating scrapping the whole thing since it feels too out of tone compared to the rest of my story. Not sure, though.
If I do keep it should I put a warning in a note at the top? I'm never sure what to do, or how much to give away, with things like that.

I had a situation like that in 'Duty Doesn't Come for Free'.  I very much had a scene I wanted to put into the story that had Zev going to dark dark places.  It wasn't really matchy with the rest of the story.  I had dark moments but they were always tempered with humor.  There was no humor in this particular scene.

I put it into the story because I felt it needed to be there, but I did warn the crap out of my readers that the chapter had disturbing content.

I might be in love with myself or at least with my writing. I keep getting drawn back to reading what I already wrote. It's not a new problem for me. LOL. I've been doing it for many many.. oh I mean just a few years. Is it wrong to cry over your own writing? LOL I get way too much into my characters. It's a sickness I tell you! LOL. I hope everybody else enjoys writing as much as I do :)

I'm kind of jealous. I always make sure that, for chapter stories, I go back and reread the most recent section before writing the next part so I can make sure to have a good idea of where I left off but I absolutely can't stand reading something I've written. Posted Image

I remember reading an interview with the author Kate Wilhelm in which she said that she could never reread anything she had written for pleasure, that all she could see was how she had failed.  I'd say I'm somewhere in between...I can read some passages that I've written and enjoy them.   But usually, it's only a few paragraphs and then I'm back to stuff that didn't come out on paper the way I had imagined them in my mind...I think I find playing out scenarios in my mind more fun than the actual writing, which takes commitment.  Once in a long while I'll write something that came out a little better than I thought it would   My literally first-ever action scene that I wrote recently (I tend not to even read action scenes very attentively!) wasn't as bad as I expected, though it is a bit perfunctory and rushed.

@DeGregoir, nope I re-read mine all the time. I have to, my epic is so long, so involved and had so many characters, like Sarah I re-read before I start another chapter.  But I also like re-reading what I have written.  I too get moved by my writing.  Which makes sense as I have had reviewers who told me I made them laugh and cry, so why not myself?  But I write for myself when all is said and done.  :happy:As to others rereading I have had fans who tell me they re-read, which is always an ego boost.

I wrote something that was triggery and, even though it was in tone with my story, I still put a big fat warning at the top. I also numbered the sections so they could read everything but the potentially troubling part (but the structure lent itself to being sectioned).

Well I myself am not above rewritting whole scenes because I wasn't satisfied. I find that when I'm excited about something the writing flows much easier, then I go back and make it pretty. Although I've had to modify some of my posts when I noticed errors. That's the hardest thing for me, because I'm an extremely fast reader and my mind/eyes/whatever tends to skip alot of words... and, the, etc. I often miss that I left out an occasional word in my own writing. But that's what editors are for right? Oh wait.... that's my job too. LOL. It's great to see that people all have their own ways of doing things.

It sounds like you have been enjoying writing and sharing it. I'm glad I finally checked out this creations forum. I had been avoiding it because I knew I would want to share too. My husband thinks I'm nuts but he's happy for me. Nothing like your wife standing in front of the t.v. blocking your boxing match or sports game telling you all the things that made her giggle on the Dragon Age Website. Poor guy I make him look at my game screenshots too. LOL.

Same here.  My husband doesn't like epic fantasy fic much but I ask him to read and he has a unique take on some things and good instincts when it comes to male emotions.

I did something similar, "Good writing, I hope, but unpleasant..."

Just a question, how many hits do you guys/ladies have to your so-called 'main' story? I'm trying to get an idea of how poplar stories are based on this traffic (on FF.net), so I know where my own tale stands. :P

Yes, finally set up my internet and can get back to the act of creation >:D

59,343 according to FF.Net (for 44 chapters, completed story).

Edit: I wouldn't take the FF.Net numbers as an exact measure of popularity, however. Hits doesn't equal people actually reading. :)

This is a bad road to go down. So many things can affect your hits that have nothing to do with the quality of the work. Is the pairing popular? Is the fandom robust? Is ff.net FUBARed like normal? All these things can mess with the numbers. It's best to not think about it too much.

Have you written anything for the site before? How often do you update? Is your story one of those weird ones that for some reason doesn't show up on the DA fanfiction page? How interesting is the summary? Are anonymous reviews disabled?

Yeah, these are all concerns. My story has a popular pairing and it's under the genre of "Romance" but it's not really about that pairing and it's all a bit awkward. So I imagine that I have a decent rate of initial hits but a low regular readership.

First chapters stats are so strange. One of my stories has ten times as many hits for chapter one then it does for the last chapter. Part of it, I guess, could be people who decide after the first chapter not to bother going further but...ten times the number?!?! I think part of it is people who are in the middle of reading and have to take breaks who then go back to the first chapter before going to, say, chatper fifteen. Still, it's a bizarre phenomenon.

That.    My last big and completed story has a buttload of hits.  However, my latest big story is trending less on hits but way more on reviews.  You just really can't tell.

You need to keep in mind that hits include people hitting the first chapter of a story sometimes to go to your latest update.  Your #'s get skewed by those clicks.  You could have a lot of subscribers for a story that never need to click on that first chapter again and you'll end up with less hits than someone that doesn't have people subscribed but click on the story and maybe never read it.

Stats are a real meanie.

Or those could be people that do not have the story on alerts but watch the update lists to see when stories they read update.  They will always hit the first chapter before navigating to the updated one.

First chapters are always skewed because of that.

I figured that might happen but I don't see why they would do that when you can click the little arrows next to it and go directly to the last chapter.

I always have more US hits than anywhere else. This month, it's 8X my next biggest one which is the UK. I do wonder if people in the US just read more fanfiction, have a bigger population than many countries, read more of my fanfiction...

QFT. That's what I do if I'm unsubscribed to a story. ;)
