Fanfiction Sucks

If it's at least 1-1.5K then it can probably stand on its own as a chapter but anything less could probably just be added to the beginning of the next chapter.

A while back there was the Star Wars author who wrote epics about Padme and Anakin and after reading a few of them I noticed how EVERYONE seemed to like them and always commented on how 'remarkable' they were. It wasn't like the characters were even Mary Sues, either, just that no one who wasn't evil/realized later that they were mistaken/or shown clearly to be wrong ever disliked them no matter how brief their appearance was. I asked the author why this was the case and got a really snippy reply about how she didn't want to add in pointless characters that disliked them and how it was her story so she could do what she wanted and if I didn't like it I could go read something else.
Which I did.
Anything like that happen to anyone else?

re: Chapter Length - Speaking personally, I've read (and writte) stuff where the chapters were huge (25k was the biggest I think) and stories where they hovered above or below 1k a pop, and I've enjoyed both. My only rule was keeping length relatively consistant throughout the story so people get to know what to expect. My DA fics (except for a one shot) have been 2-4k in length per chapter. I think they would be longer if I had more time to write during the week.
re: the whole shame of fanfiction stuff, I'll get back to that once I wake up after a good hot shower.

I think that's the biggest problem I have; worrying that sharing my style will reveal to others that I am not worth their time or that they will mock or downgrade me.
So I just skirt around this board because I don't write proper grown up stuff like everyone else does but This above, Is so much how I feel about sharing stuff that I had to jump in and go "THIS! THIS! THIS! A THOUSAND TIMES THIS!"
Um...please continue I'll just go back to under my rock.

I lurk this particular thread because I'm afraid of whatever I write ending up getting lost in the sea of fics.DreGregoire wrote...

Despite the fact that I started writing one the other night.

I was blissfully ignorant of any negative connotations associated with fan fiction for a great number of years. I even submitted a piece as an assignment in university and got a pleasing mark for it. My parents even read Star Wars novels (essentially fan fiction, although the writers actually get paid for it. I must be in the wrong genre...).
It was actually *gamers* who first started making me feel like I should be ashamed of fan fiction. It wasn't as simple as them saying 'Why not write something original?'...I think my favourite term was 'Writing fan fiction is like masturbating to someone else's fantasies.' Yay. It never stopped me writing, but at some point I stopped saying 'fan fiction' whenever people asked what I was writing, unless I thought they'd understand the answer.
And so I love these little oasisisis... *checks dictionary* oases(?) of creativity adrift in the internet, where people 'get it'. <3

Um... what's wrong with this? Some people have GOOD fantasies... *ahem*.
On another note - Neil Gaiman wrote something that I found pretty relevant and others who, like me, get all paranoid and guilty about not posting chapters regularly, might find reassuring:
Entitlement Issues

This is seriously one of my favorite things ever, and is something I find myself mentally referencing a lot, for various reasons.

Yeah, there have been times (I had to study for a difficult final or needed time off to deal with graduation) when I really didn't appreciate being pestered to update or when I've gotten sick of one fandom and started in on another to have people from the onld one badgering me about going back to it. It's seriously not fun and reviewers can sometimes get very entitled. 'Oh, I don't play DA so you need to start writing about something I'm familiar with!'SurelyForth wrote...
