So I'm new to this, and wondering -- how do you decide if your story is T or M? Obviously an orgy would be M, but how far does the T rating go before you wander into "mature" territory?
Are there guidelines posted somewhere? I didn't find any on ff.net, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
Edit: I found the guidelines, and they say T is "Suitable for teens, 13 years
and older, with some violence, minor coarse language, and minor
suggestive adult themes."
So is the decision on what "some violence" and "minor suggestive adult themes" means arbitrary? I think I may just label all mine M, to be in the safe side!

This is the site that ff.net references...it's semi-helpful, and more helpful than what ff.net itself lists, if I remember right.
I guess that answers a question about what I had concerns about. I think mine is fine staying at T - it certainly is right now but I had planned on referencing something a bit dark but it will be that, and left to the imagination, so it should be okay. I mean, I'm the kid who read "Scarlet Letter" in sixth grade and had NO idea what she had done. XD At all. Then I read it again as a senior in high school and went Ohhhhhhhhhh.
Edit: Oh, never mind, they're exactly the same. But anyways, those are fff.net's guidelines.

lol ! I edited mine as you were responding. I don't know how to judge what is proper or 'mildly suggestive'. I think my mind is completely warped. I was at the other end of the spectrum from you -- reading Jackie Collins books when I was 11 and probably inferring way too much into the classics we read in English class! Also probably not good to read Heinlein at that young of age...
edit: When I was older all my "Ohhhhhhhh's" went to realizing characters didn't have the right to treat people the way they did (like, Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.... how did I have a major crush on him when I was 12??! He was a ****!)

For the guidelines, they used to use movie ratings and since the T rating says suitable for children thirteen and younger I think you could use the 'what would be allowed in a PG13 rating' and be safe. Anything that would get it a R rating would be M.

Anne Bronte is the better writer in my opinion. As for Charlotte... I had to read Vilette for University and if I meet her in the afterlife I'm going to punch her out.

Oh I just hated Heathcliffe. But not as much as I hated Cathy. I like my love stories with happy endings. I had to study Wuthering Heights for my HSC and tried SO HARD to prepare the OTHER novel for the exam but the bastards put a totally unanswerable question on the other text I was studying so I ended up having to answer on Emily Bronte. I'm still bitter and angry about that. So I probably take it out on Cathy and Heathcliffe unfairly.

I bought Wuthering Heights from the dollar store for fifty cents when I was 10-ish (also purchased and read- Cujo! That did not mess me up in any way shape or form

The only Brontë novel that I've read is Jane Eyre and I agree. Due to scheduling issues, I had to read the whole thing in three days. Jane could not get any more frustratingly passive and as for Mr. Rochester...I can't believe them getting together is supposed to be a happy ending! Plus the fact she'd marry someone who knowingly would have done a sham marriage with her after locking his real wife in the attic with an alcoholic nurse...she's just setting herself up for disaster.Miri1984 wrote...

I think that would be MA hahaha, but I guess it really depends on how descriptive you got. Like me. I'm not likely to describe the act but it would be mentioned or hinted at.

I bought Wuthering Heights from the dollar store for fifty cents when I was 10-ish (also purchased and read- Cujo! That did not mess me up in any way shape or form) and I read about 20 pages and decided it wasn't for me. Every now and again I think about trying again but I've heard so much about how loathsome the leads are that I just can't do it.
I love that comic! And it's just so true.
@Miri - Anne's books were so different from her sisters, I loved them. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall also really spoke out against women's positions at that time, which was rather daring. And very unlike her sisters' works.
I do admit a soft spot for Jane Eyre, although it's based more on a vague memory than of the actual content. I haven't re-read it, since I know it would probably spoil my affection.
@Sarah -- I knew there was a reason that book bothered me (besides the obvious). I must've blocked out the quotes from Wuthering Heights.
Thanks for all the replies regarding the rating system. I think I have a better idea of how to grade my fics now.

Surley: You should see the reviews I'm getting for my repost of The Rescue on ff.net. Most of them are going to be very disappointed. I'll let you know what I finally get hit with.
M v T: I'm rating everything M. I don't want to have to watch my character's mouths, or edit the violence, or the sexuality.

It involves a certain Alim Surana, elf blood mage, doing some really nasty blood magic at the Battle of Ostagar (monsters hacked to pieces, shredded and turned into fuel for his spells and other things).
I just updated it BTW, with song suggestions mid-chapter too.
Those suggestions you lords/ladies made really helped

So I just gotta say that listening to your muse sometimes is a good thing. I caved on the story that she wanted me to write, and now that story's finished, I've gotten over a thousand written today on the story I need to finish, and hopefully she starts inspiring my main story again soon. Yay!!
That plus weekend stats suck. :-P That is all.
I loved your letters, Sandi -- I need to give you feedback in the proper place! I'm so bad with that.
re: stats -- since I'm new to the whole stats thing, even what must be really sucky stats make me happy. Everytime I see a new hit, I'm like, YAY! someone looked at it!!
My muse is actually behaving... it's just RL that isn't! I can hardly get 5 minutes at a time to sit down at the computer today!
Another question for all of you -- If I were to make a thread with my story/stories -- do most of you put the whole story into posts? or just link it to ff.net? I've seen both done, but wasn't sure if there was a rule of thumb, or if M-rated stuff should only be linked.
