So I just gotta say that listening to your muse sometimes is a good thing. I caved on the story that she wanted me to write, and now that story's finished, I've gotten over a thousand written today on the story I need to finish, and hopefully she starts inspiring my main story again soon. Yay!!
That plus weekend stats suck. :-P That is all.
I loved your letters, Sandi -- I need to give you feedback in the proper place! I'm so bad with that.
re: stats -- since I'm new to the whole stats thing, even what must be really sucky stats make me happy. Everytime I see a new hit, I'm like, YAY! someone looked at it!!
My muse is actually behaving... it's just RL that isn't! I can hardly get 5 minutes at a time to sit down at the computer today!
Another question for all of you -- If I were to make a thread with my story/stories -- do most of you put the whole story into posts? or just link it to ff.net? I've seen both done, but wasn't sure if there was a rule of thumb, or if M-rated stuff should only be linked.
Aw, thanks! I have a handful more of them to post, but they're all essentialy written at this point. So now I can move on to projects that have been languishing!
And yeah, my other story is a Dalish one, so the hits I'm getting now seem fantastic to me - daily updating helps, I'm sure, but my Cousland fic is just on the whole more appealing to people than a Dalish one, I think. Oh well. I still get nothing compared to some of the people here, but that's okay!
I do both, since i started here first, and all of my stuff is really tame. I also prefer the discussion that can spawn here on the threads - you just don't get that must interaction, especially between multiple people, on ff.net. You get a bigger audience and more readers, certainly, but I've made friends through Community Creations moreso than ff.net.

I only put my first chapter up because it was mostly inoffensive. And I didn't post the rest because of language/smut and because my chapters get epic and formatting anything here sucks. I think I spent almost an hour posting that one chapter because of futzing around with italics.
I would recommend starting a thread and just linking it. That way, no formatting woes and you have your own little playhouse here. Win-win!

If you hit the BBcode button you can see what the format will look like before you post!

If formatting is a problem, I have it down pretty pat by now. I just insert the italic tags while I write (works for blog posts too, which is useful, but not for PMs), then copy and paste things into Notepad. If you take from ff.net's page or their document manager screen, there's no need to go back and add spaces between paragraphs. Otherwise you can do that in Notepad. Then ctrl+A, hop over to BSN, and ctrl+V, voila!

Why am I not surprised that you have this perfected? <_<
Does any of that help with the random line breaks?

lol Lots and lots of practice! You benefit from it, getting all those snippets!
Random line breaks? Not sure I've gotten those...I have more trouble with missing a line break when I'm skimming over and reinserting them.
Are you using the standard form instead of quick reply? Cause that automatically adds a double space whenever you hit enter, so hitting enter twice gives you two double spaces.

My second biggest issue was the text was all bunched to the left side, for some reason. And I used the quick reply and then edited it in the standard form (because I knew I'd have to edit the hell out of it).

Wow. That's a MUCH better way to nest than to try to squeeze yourself around the edge of the bathtub, scrub brush in hand.
Speaking of fanfic nesting, everyone should check out Miri's first chapter of a round robin fic a bunch of us are doing:

A little bit of advertising never goes amiss and Ladyames is also one of the authors who is adding their name and chapter to this

I ask because I have two fun friends on here who have similar points of view as me... both have graciously accepted my requests to proof-read my fanfic chapters to make sure I don't go wildly out-of-character (particularly with Loghain) or fall into Mary Sue Land. I have two chapters completed (just finished Chapter 3 tonight and am starting a good headway into Chapter 4) and I emailed them both the two chapters last week... they had all last weekend and all this weekend to give me some sort of response ("This is great!" or "This sucks!" would be welcomed, really)... and I've heard nothing back. One's had wisdom tooth surgery recently, so I totally udnerstand that... other one, dunno. Vacation maybe?
How long do you normally wait before you can't stand it anymore and post the thing anyway before getting a beta response? I'm going completely loopy at the moment... itchy to post the first two chapters, but I don't want to be an ass to my betas either. But I'm an Aries, so I am TERRIBLY impatient.
Should I just bite the bullet and upload to ff.net and see what hits the fan? Or should a cooler head prevail and await my beta responses?
Also, thoughts on posting multiple chapters at once? Since I have the first two done, my instinct would be to post both at once. But at the rate I'm going, I'll have Chapters 3 and 4 done around the same time as well, so the next update would again be two chapters at once. Is that fine (if unusual) or would I be better off doing just one chapter at a time and giving myself some buffer room? And yes, these are definitely separate chapters and wouldn't be better lumping 1 and 2 together as one and 3 and 4 together as one.

I recently waited over a month for my beta to get back to me but it wasn't for my main fic but for an experiment so I could afford to wait. It was worthwhile too, she was very encouraging.

Waiting when I'm done with something drives me crazy but betas do take awhile sometimes and have RL issues so I don't use them.DragonRacer13 wrote...

I would probably wait to post the second chapter at least a little so it keeps your story on the first page longer and more people can see it but that's just me.

I agree with Sarah on waiting a little between chapters. Last weekend I posted two chapters at the same time, and now the 4th chapter has more hits than the 3rd chapter, and the hits seemed to decrease from what they'd been after the first two chapters, as if they were being split up.

I don't have a beta reader per say, but I do have someone that I run things through when I'm unsure about something or curious how something comes across. *winks at Surely*
I also have a group of people, or maybe several groups, that I can run ideas through, complain about things or ask questions about details I'm not sure about.
As far as chapters go, unless it's a prologue + Chapter 1 sort of thing, I always wait and post chapters on separate days. In fact, if you feel like you can stay far enough ahead, set up a posting schedule, like MWF or TR or TRS or something. That way your readers know when to expect the next chapter!

Haha, don't get me wrong - the only time I've managed daily updates is with my letters to Fergus, the longest of which is just around 1000 words, and most of which are 500-600. I usually end up updating at most once a week, more like once every two or three, but I work a ridiculous amount a week too in addition to being a slow writer.
My muse was good to me this past week though - finished all the letters except for last minute tweeks as well as adding another chapter and half the epilogue to one of my side projects. Go muse! She's kinda tired now though.

I admit, I have no life most weekdays.
(Although lately I've been busy turning Atton Rand into a dark jedi since I'm playing KOTOR 2 with the restored content mod for the first time. I want that happy-Atton ending! And now... I want to write star wars fic, too. I think I'll resist that urge, though. I like characters that are too screwed up to be decent jedi, and too nice to be proper sith.)
