soignee is right, the attention span for online reading is different than a book. I have only had a couple of chapters that were longer, 7k and one 8k. But those I felt were pushing it.

The reason I say this is that I tend to read at work in between calls at a call center. So it is really hard to read something too long. I suspect many people snatch stolen moments with their fav fanfics.

On word count/page totals, when I'm writing I shoot for a general goal of no less than 1500 words (this is a goal but by no means a standard for me). Sometimes I go over and other times I'm just about right there. I think the longest chapter I've written was 3800 words and it involved wall sex, so go figure. The power of faux smut compels you to write!



Honestly, for me, it's not the word count that matters so much as the story. If you can capture what you need to in a chapter with less words great. If you can't? That's ok too. Shake your word maker and show the fanfic world what you got is what I say.

On the subjects of length...yeah. I've been trying to average 3k words per chapter. Apparently (according to FF.Net) my shortest chapter in The Hunt is just under 1,400 words ('Bathing'...guess I should have added sex ).



As Tasmen said though, the story is more important than the word count. I'd rather have good pacing and a relatively cohesive structure than something that's been deliberately padded out to look bigger. And I especially like ending a chapter in what feels like 'the right place'.

3K is about my limit, I recently split a chapter that was going on for 5K because I thought it was too long and out of proportion to the other.

Absolutely - you need to have proper break in the story to start a new chapter. Before I started writing FF I never managed to write in chapter lots - part of me really loves the discipline of posting chapter updates - it really makes me focus my writing down to what needs to happen in order to progress the plot. Also great fun!

15 chapters so far, 55000ish words. And I think I got 8 chapters left, give or take. >< And a sequel planned. Let me gooooo muse!

Does anyone know where their main character came from? Because I don't. Missa Brosca just appeared, kneecapped me to write and she seems to be her own sentient being now with a voice. My head I know there's at least one other crazy person writer who thinks like that, but honestly I can talk about Missa as if she's a person and some how it makes sense, lol.

Requoting this, as according to the traffic on my ff.net, the chapters with the most graphic sweaty bits in are the most well read. This amuses me, somewhat.

ROFL soignee! My character too kneecapped me and begged me to write her story. She isn't hte noble I am still playing through in game. And I would never let Ali sacrifice himself, LOL. So I don't know where Kai came from. And like you she has a voice and personality. I am her slave.

I am not surprised that the saucy chapters are the most read. When I write or read the the phrase 'stolen moments,' I invariably picture Weird Al in his music video "Too White And Nerdy," having a stolen moment with a huge roll of bubble wrap. *snicker*

Oh soignee, I love Dead Duster Walking! Thanks for the link. I shall put a shout out for it on my next chapter.  I don't want Ms. Brosca to kneecap me.  My patellas are still recovering from Kai.

Yes! Though curiously I have two audiences who read my stuff.

I got the "this has dwarves in, I approve" lot who don't like it when it gets to the sex bits, and then I got the "this has Zevran in, I approve" lot who are all "...well I suppose it's interesting what you did with the dwarf bits and the other characters, is there more sexy Zevran bits?"

I do love Oghren, he is so damn funny. I really enjoy writing for him, and getting him into trouble. Well trouble he gets himself into. Usually involving Leliana. : D
