"Some things are worth preserving." is an interesting line, for sure.

EDIT: @ Dean_The_Young That hormonal thing is certainly my experience of having children. If the baby cried when I was chopping veges I'd be likely to slice off a finger. For me, anyway, its always been like a "Fight or Flight" thing. Interestingly, I found that real primal protective thing wore off over time. Still love the little monsters but itsdifferent as they grow up.

That one line had huge significance for my DE and is a main plot thread in my fic.

The same thing was true for me.  And for the first few years I basically gave up TV because anything with a child that was hurt, scared or hungry brought tears to my eyes and stimulated a need to DO SOMETHING RIGHT NOW TO FIX IT - gotta love hormones.  My youngest is almost 4 now so I think I could watch TV again if I had the time.

Well, the sound of a baby crying is one of the most intense and universally distressing sounds in the world. There's arguments it is even genetic memory of sorts, an evolutionary pickup, but I didn't want to equate 'child's crying' with 'unconditional love' when men and people who haven't gone through pregnancy experience it as well.

Yeah. My littlest is only 8 months and I still can't eat/sleep/do anything when he's crying. This is why I think that infanticide and the really bad mother stuff is so sad. Because it seems to defy what nature intended.

(I do know people who have had good experiences being treated for postnatal depression though, thank goodness. I think we are getting better at supporting mums, hopefully.)

OK, gotta run - but I'll have a read TanithAeyrs. You've piqued my interest.

Hope you enjoy it Firky. I'll warn you that the first couple of chapters are not up to my current standards - my first serious efforts in almost 20 years.

And congrats on the 8 month old. I still get a little baby hungry sometimes, but then I think about having kids in the house until I'm 60 and I reconsider.

I was pretty sure the DLC happens one year after Awakening, so it would be 2 years after origins.

Check the Witch Hunt info out:

"Nearly a year has passed since the Archdemon's death, and word has reached the Wardens that Morrigan has returned to Ferelden. She has been sighted in the southern wilderness where she was first encountered."

So not even a full year after the end of the Blight and Morri's back, or someone who looks like her. I will laugh so hard of the OGB stole her body.

My reaction to a baby crying tends to be a strong desire to leave the room because it's loud and annoying but I'm hardly maternal and don't have children so maybe it's different. I remember a few years ago when my littlest brother was a baby his crying didn't make me want to aid him in any way but I did go get my parents so he'd quiet down but that was more annoyance factor.

OK, no I'm still here because now my brain is ticking over. I think Flemeth being an old lady is clever because the default feeling towards old ladies is that they are caring old grannies. (That's what I thought when I met Flemeth.) Except, of course, if they are wicked witches. But wicked witches don't have daughters. Especially ones they kill and possess. That would freak out the traditional reader too much. Gee, BioWare's writers are clever. I wonder if Flemeth is really cares so little for Morrigan. Time will tell.

OK, now I'm just neglecting my baby. Bye!

Snap!  I think it is different for us childless ones or should that be child free? Couple of years ago I worked in an advice centre in a deprived part of London and the wailing of children was almost a constant background noise.  Very irritating but then I guess we're supposed to find it irritating.

Yes, and the OGC having free will must be one of the most interesting story strains.

In my version Flemeth exploits Morrie and uses her to exploit others so Morrie in turn is doomed to do the same towards her child.  www.fanfiction.net/s/5885435/17/Dark_Ritual

Cool, Maria. I'll give that a squiz too. I'm now all interested in Morrigan. (And God baby theories. I'm convinced now that I have my money on Morrigan getting clucky.)

PS. Yes, other people's babies crying is annoying. I swore I'd never say "Wait until you have children, so I wont." :)

Fair enough.

I'd love a pet. A proper pet. We have fish that we try in vain to keep alive for the sake of our 3 year old but I'd love a big, boysterous border collie or cattle dog. (Not gunna happen with a small backyard.)

EDIT: Sorry, I'm getting this thread totally oftopic. I'm going to have a read of these Morrigan fics now, bye bye.

ÖK guys/ladies, so in your opinion, having 43 reviews for a story of 15 chapters is a pretty good ratio right?

I DID see stories of 8 chapters with almost 1,300 reviews in the HP fandom of course, but I'm asking specifically for the DA fandom.

It seems pretty good to me, having 43 people take the time to type a review over 15 chapters means you have their interest. Stories that have been around longer seem to have more reviews, as more people have had time to find them. I noticed your story was only posted a few months ago so you already have a strong following in a short period of time. The rating on your story will also influence the number of reviews - mature rated stories don't come up unless you change the search settings so that will reduce the number of people that find you (I didn't look to see what your story was rated).

No, I mean 43 in total. All the reviews I got amount to 43. I get enough hits, but the number of people that review are about 5-6... I think. And they reviewed repeatedly.

That's not counting the ones that reviewed only once.

Rating is M by the way.

EDIT

I assume you misread as reviewERs? If I had 43, I'd be raving with joy without a second doubt.

Sorry, should have specified - I knew you meant over the whole story.   Just for comparison, my story has been up since January 4th.  I'm now up to 18 chapters (as of today) and I have 87 reviews (story is mature rated).

I find that most of my reviews are people who review repeatedly - those that are really into the story and also have time to type a review.   That is also one way I find new stories to read - I look at the fics my reviewers have marked as favorites and check them out if they interest me.

I think that seems pretty good to me too Raonar! M makes it harder, I keep forgetting to flip my filter over. What is the name of your story? I am making a list of stories I want to read as others get finished. I want to read so many great stories.

Okay, that sounds about right I think. I am more than satisfied that I didn't create something boring.

Oh, and before i forget, I should probably thank Maria13 for that calendar she put in at the start of her fanfiction. I'd been looking for those month names for a while before i found them (the wiki has the months mixed up between high and low names).

EDIT:

@Gilgamesh1138: Name: Dragon Age: The Crown of Thorns (My signature has both links). It's an AU where my DN does... things. And all origins wardens become wardens. :D

/end shameless advertising

EDIT 2

I suggest stopping by the thread here on the forums first to see some in-game pictures of each Warden.

EDIT 3

My signature always has a quote from my story too, just for the lulz.

For the record I think 43 is pretty good.  Onwards and upwards!

It really depends on a lot of factors even within a single fandom. My first story I followed through on, I think while I was actively writing it I got less than 60 reviews total over 26 chapters, with quite a few added long after it was done. I started it as T and changed the rating to M about halfway through. (all my stuff since then has been M)

My most recent story, which I started a couple weeks ago, has about twice that for just 16 chapters, though. But, it's my third story for the same 'universe' and I'm probably somewhere near half a million words featuring the same main character, so I have a lot of people who follow me, and that character, specifically.

I think it also depends on which characters you write about, though. I know someone (soignee, maybe?) was saying dwarf warden stories don't seem to get as many reviews. I think Cousland/Alistair are the biggest draw, and maybe the mages after that. In general, romance seems to be the most popular, with Zevran doing better than either of the female romance options, and Alistair being the most popular of all. (I think Awakenings pairings are an outlier since they're just not very common).
Female wardens seem more common, but that's probably more a commentary on the gender division of fanfic in general.

It seems like Origins stories are dying out in popularity. I started my story with Awakenings, and just recently went back to start writing the Origins bit. If I get six or seven reviews a chapter for the Origin story I'm writing I'm happy. I get twice that per chapter for my postgame one, though. And, it looks like most of the really heavily reviewed stories on ffnet now are postgame.

So I would say 43 reviews for your first story, when you don't feature the "popular" Warden origin or a romance, is really good, and as you go on you'll probably pick up more reviewers. It's a sad truth that a lot of people look at the stories and will specifically read the ones with a lot of reviews, since that's often seen as a sign it's "good."

Heh.

Tha's got to be the most useful AND concise outline of the DA fandom I've ever read. My thanks.

I suspect I may eventually get to writing a sequel for this tale with the same main character. The point, however, is that this tale will likely not be done by the time DA: 2 is released. Thus, after playing that game, I will probably have a lot more info on the universe and what happenes to the Chantry (it almost breaks apart as far as I know) and the world on the brink of war.

And the Witch Hunt DLC is also coming out, though I fear some may experience a massive let down.

Oh, yes. I've written at least something for all the origins and my dwarf ones tend to get less interest than the other Wardens, which is a shame as I love the dwarf ones more.

@Raonar: Considering that you posted the first three chapters at the same time, 43 is even better. The low review count on the DA fandom is a continual source of frustration for me as I have a lot more inspiration for this fandom right now but I know that I could easily get several times the reviews I get for DA stories by going to a bigger fandom again like Naruto or HP.
