Oh, yes. I've written at least something for all the origins and my dwarf ones tend to get less interest than the other Wardens, which is a shame as I love the dwarf ones more.

@Raonar: Considering that you posted the first three chapters at the same time, 43 is even better. The low review count on the DA fandom is a continual source of frustration for me as I have a lot more inspiration for this fandom right now but I know that I could easily get several times the reviews I get for DA stories by going to a bigger fandom again like Naruto or HP.

Well, you have 119 at 21 chapters and don't even HAVE romance, not to mention it's during Origins and is about a DNF. I actually thought it was an impressive number.

And yeah, I'd forgotten about the first three chapters at the same time thing. I had to wait for five days before I was allowed to upload to FF.net. Ah well, I can understand their concern with spam.

Oh yeah, if you post multiple chapters at once you have to assume that most people will review them at once on a single review. If you're really concerned about the number of reviews it's almost better to sit on the other chapters for a day or two.
I'm always running into that since I get in phases where I update very frequently.

I'm not all THAT concerned with the number, but I still feel giddy when i get one :D

And Sarah pretty much solved that problem for me because she graciously reviewed every single chapter anyway.

I'm with you Raonar, the reviews just feel good.  It's also nice when people take the time to tell you specifically what they liked or didn't like in your story.  It's nice to know a favorite bit of dialog was a hit, and its also good to find out if someone sees a specific flaw in your writing.   Although my betas catch a lot of my errors, I have had a couple of kind reviewers point out problems so I could go back and fix them.

Yes, I got a criticizing review just today, saying that my HNF is sort of generic and not special at all, and in love with Alistair and etc., which was funny because that's EXACTLY what I wanted her to be.

On the other hand, he said that the chapter got 200% better when the DC showed up and scolded her for being an idiot (though Faren didn't really call her that).

Bottom line: He/she (the reviewer) said I should focus less on those parts that are exactly like the game and do more with the others, which is what I intended to do anyway. But I wanted to make Gwen's (Gwenith, that's the HNF) mentality and her relationship with the bastard prince clear.

I expected a backlash like this when I wrote chapter 15. I guess I spoiled my readers with originality in the previous chapters.

I don't think reviews ever stop making people happy. I admit, I'm really spoiled in terms of reviews and I still get excited every time I get a new one.

And I suspect we all do the page refresh/ nonstop email check thing just waiting for them after publishing a new chapter. I mean, we ALL do, right? Not just me?

Oh reviews and stats on FF.net are like crack. I love getting reviews (Lupus, I have your stories on my back list of wonderful authors to read and review, I promise I will read them sweetie. I can say that I have snuck a peek and LOVE your style and what I read).

Raonar you are on my list too (it's a good list not a bad list, LMAO).

Oh, I've got a lot of stories to read as well once I'm finished with my DN story. I can't read much DA fiction (well, by my standards, at least) right now because I am determined to get my story done and thus am trying to push off DA burnout as long as possible.

So about maturity rating on Fan Fiction net again. I've decided to set mine to T and create a seperate story with one shots for questionable material that I think needs to be rated M. I won't write much smut so it should work fine that way. We'll see; I might change my mind again at a later date and turn it all back to M LOL. Of course; last night and most of today I have been unfaithful to Dragon Age to play Assassins Creed. I hope Alistair and Zevran come... er... I mean don't come knocking on my door to complain.

I don't really know how much of a difference it makes keeping it at t for the default filter. I actually started to get more readers when I went from t to m.

I just set my current stories to M, never know when I might write something that offends people. My most recent chapter had a pretty nasty scene...

By the way... I usually don't ask this bluntly, but would anyone like to read my current FF? I'm a bit short on reviews, though it's probably because I haven't gotten far in the story yet. It's here: http://www.fanfictio...Legend_of_Tayte

You know, on the one hand I'm excited that I'm finally getting to go back to Orzammar in my story but on the other I'm kind of freaking out about how to justify the decisions I'm making there. It's one thing if you do things that may not lead to the best possible outcome if your Warden misunderstands the situation or thinks that they're acting for the best but if they know damn well what they're doing then, well...I never wanted my Warden to be a saint? Posted Image

I'm rather new to the whole fanfic thingy. How much advertising should I do without looking like the attention **** I really am? I've read a lot of it, reviewed some of it (generally only when I could something useful) and now that I'm writing I just want acknowledgement that someone else has read it. Is that common?

Whenever I find myself looking for, or even writing for, reviews, it's generally a sign I need to take a break from FFN.

You really shouldn't seek other people's approval. I've known people who fixated on things like that, and always were the most miserable whenever someone said they didn't like something.

I don't know if it's common, but I certainly feel the need to have someone at least acknoledge the presence of my work. Lucky for me I have a nice review for my first few chapters! Posted Image

Speaking for myself, I found the best way to get attention was just to post frequently. Getting your story on the first page of the site for a few hours every few days might be all you need. Enough people click and read, enough people like it, word can get around. :)

If you want to go all out, I'd suggest putting a link to your stories in your forum signature. Then, depending on who's in your story, you could request that particular fanbases (eg. Swoopers or Team Zev) list your fic in their database. There are groups here on BSN, in LiveJournal and Facebook to name a few.

I am with Shadow on that, I used to post a chapter every day for my epic, and that really got it a lot of attention. I am almost to 83k hits, I started it in January. Post often if you can.

@Dean, I don't write for others, nor for the reviews. I never have. Hence, when I have had bad reviews or people whining I'm not writing it the way they want (does not happen often thank the Maker) I ignore them and they go elsewhere. I am just saying the reviews and the stats are a nice little bonus.

I have discovered over the past week that a huge amount of reviews can be a double edge sword. While 98% of my reviews made me SQUEE with delight the other 2% had me literally ready to give up on writing...I even had one reviewer who signed up for a fanfic account JUST to give me a bad review... nice huh...I just have to keep reminding myself, as Gil said, that I am writing for me and just being nice and sharing.

I will say that once you do start getting a bunch of reviews in you can get a bit spoiled, then when you have a chapter or a story that doesn't garner quite as much attention it can make you a bit sad until you put it into perspective.

@Lupus I too do the refresh e-mail/ refresh stats cha cha when I post...I swear they are like a drug and I have also found that when I switched the rating of my Teagan story from a T to an M my stats shot up.

*Feels all warm and giddy*

I'll be interested in your opinion on the protagonist. Some poeple have called him a magnificent bastard, while others actually said they couldn't bear to read my fic because he was far too annoying.

You make it sound as if the reviewer registered to call you names or something.

What makes you think s/he doesn't have a point?

Having (I think) located the review in question, I can only say that there are better ways of making a point, valid or otherwise.

But...it is the internet, after all.
