It seems from these posts that most fan fiction writers, at least here, are women. Why you suppose that is – I mean beyond the battle of the sexes notion (like an innate woman’s need to fix what she thinks is wrong kind of thing). As a first time fanfic writer, I’m really interested in what other newbies have to say.

For me, it’s an innate need to fix what’s wrong :-) Seriously though, the material and world is rich enough that it begs for expansion and player involvement – I like its ethical, mature themes but there’s still enough light-hearted fun. I just hope the storyline doesn’t get ruined with all the upcoming additions. Sorry, but RTO was a total letdown… Alistair and Wynne’s dialogue? Ewww. It all just seemed too “rush it out to market.”

Personally, I just wish I could find more fanfic that wasn't simply romances and the like. People starting new storylines in Orlais, or political intrigue as a result of what all has been going on in Ferelden, that sort of thing. Though, I suppose that's more the realm of quests and the like built in the toolset. Anyone know of particularly well done of either sorts that they'd like to reccommend?

Most of the cases I think it's simply a woman sharing and expressing her fantasy through a creative medium such as writing. I mean look at the majority of fanfics out there, no matter the subject. Short lovefics usually involving an already exsisting character and a unique character generally modeled afterthemselves. What subjects are generally avoidedMen, we prefer to express our fantasies through more intimate and personal means rather then through a creative medium. Take Marcus for example, he is no doubt tierlessly working on trying find a frech girl with short red hair, blue eyes, and has a bit of an eyelash fetish. ;)

And on a slightly more serious note, fanfic is a great tool for writers. The characters, universe, and a general conflict is already fleshed out so all you need to do is worry about stringing together a plot and some dialogue. Great way for novices to get their feet wet as a good chunk of the work is already done and it allows more experienced writers the opportunity to hone certain skills and focus heavily on any particular weakness they have.

Personally, I just wish I could find more fanfic that wasn't simply

Eh, I've been working on something for a while now, even though a few posts up I said I don't usually do fanfic, which is considerably different than what you generally see posted here, almost fitting exactly what you'd like to see actually. I really didn't have any intention of making it public, it was done more as a personal exercise in character development, it's freaking long as hell, and well, like I said it's quite different then what you see here and figured it would go mostly ignored anyways. I don't know, maybe since there is another soul out there who much like myself craves something a little different in the fanfic realm I'll post it up as I do share his and/or her pain.

Hey, my fic has (to date) pirates, cannibals and murder most foul, all outside the borders of Ferelden! XD

It's weird seeing people call for non-romance fics in a way. Understandable, certainly, considering the plethora of love/sex-based DA:O works out there, but weird for me because I've never even tried putting romance into a fic until my current one. Even then I still consider The Hunt pretty light on 'mushy stuff', and would classify it as 'Adventure'. Whether or not it's 'well done' is, like all art, a matter of personal opinion. ;)

I actually didn't plan the Zevran/Moira/Alistair triangle, but then I remembered Zevran ended the game in love with her and Moira's a pushy wench and has ideas that seem to be beyond my control. It was just going to be a "rescue the king" and go home sorta deal. Now I just have to reign it in.

If only my "real" work was flowing so smoothly.

To be honest I'm the type that would rather have a scathing review than hear nothing at all. On the fanfiction.net site I have all the subscriptions but hardly any reviews and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that it's nice to have but say something people! Maybe I'm just being nuts?

Honestly, I'm the same way.  I see the fav alerts and subscription and then no reviews and I go 'what you talking about willis?'.  I'd like to know what people enjoy and do not enjoy.  I'm treating writing fanfic as an exercise in writing so that someday I might actually write the silly sp00ky novel lingering in my head.  But if I don't get constructive criticism (which some folks DO offer, I'm looking at you OdieDragon!), it's hard to improve.

*shrugs* Personally the romantic element is always interesting to see because it's another person's perspective on the whole thing. Is mine going to be outright mushy? Not really. I'm not a big mushy person IRL so why reflect it in my writing? Will I explore the emotions of the romance. Yes because that part intrigues me. I'm not someone that gushes over the romance novels in Barnes and Noble or Borders. In fact I can't stand those books because it's an unrealistic view of happy endings and love.

I'm not going to blast those that choose to write the mushy or decide to go all out romantic on their stories because it's their creative right to do so. It's the right of the reader to ignore them and move on to something else and find what you're looking for. If you can't find it then the solution is write it yourself. Why? Because only you can know exactly what you want. You can't depend on another to draw out what you want in your mind. One can try but you've set them up for failure due to high expectations.

I think this is where I say:  I agree (again).

I'm not the overly mushy type and it's hard for me to reflect those emotions in my writing.   This doesn't mean I don't appreciate it in others that have that particular talent.  I'm also not a huge fan of the romance novel which is probably why I wrote that parody piece of mine.

I think in a story based on Dragon Age canon, romance is going to be an integral part.  It's so important to the story the game tells, I can't imagine it also not being a part, in some way, of the fanfic being produced.  And besides, there is that whole 'chicks write more fanfic' than dudes thing.  Girls tend to be suckers (myself included) for those romance angles be they overly sappy or two angst cookies sandwiching a creamy, frosting center.

Personally, I prefer a few fight scenes with my romance. I don't mind it, but I prefer it to not be the only plot.

I don't have to have a happy ending, but I'd like it to be a bit more justified than say, the way Whedon ended Dollhouse, for instance. (What, me bitter? No....)

Lots to think about from this thread! Let's see... It will be a bit jumbled because I'm in my lunchtime food coma...

Romance: I am SUCH a sucker for this, I admit it. A well-written romance will catch my eye everytime. I mean something with some adventure, a little exploration into the heart and mind, fight scenes are good (like the stable scene in the movie "Zorro"), and well-developed characters... And I don't mean filling their bodices to the brim! Falling for someone is such a complex journey and I enjoy exploring it with different characters and situations.

Fanfic: I guess I actually started writing fic waaaay back when I was active in online RP on AOL -- yeah, I just dated myself. LOL It was nothing for me during those days, my time playing Ultima Online, or even WoW, to toss up pages and pages of stories. Granted, those were my characters and I could do whatever I wanted to them (MUAHAAAA)... DA:O perked my interest, especially when I saw these boards. It's nice to write frivilously for my own amusement. If others like it, that's just icing. It helps me get back into the discipline of writing a set amount each day.

The best part? Meeting all of you! I have sorely missed having a group of writers that I can chat with, get critiques from, and generally just have a wonderful time with. That has really kept me writing lately.

I'm not against happy endings as long as it's justified like you all have said. In fact I've been debating what sort of ending I want to give my fanfic and have been lately leaning towards a dark ending. I'll let you decide what that means. But anyway I think some forget the meaning of romance. It's not always about love when you think about it.

I've often read a good book I thought would have been better with a little romance.  It can be a powerful motivation for the characters and doesn't have to be all about the sex.

Tas, really??? Do tell... I had a kajillion characters. LOL Pirates, assassins, etc... In fact, AOL RP is how I met my darling hubby twelve years ago. I took my brand-spanking new character into a chat room where his character was talking to a queen (very involved storyline), he completely ignored her the moment I walked in and the rest is history. Or is it infamy?

Who knows, we might "know" each other....

My time on AOL RP was roughly 15 years ago (YIKES....).   I did mostly World of Darkness stuff and then graduated into the wonderful world of MU*s.  And there I go pulling another skeleton bone out of that dark and dreary closet o' geek doom.
