1: The Hawkes say in game, or Carver says (PC's brother), that they've been "Running since Ostagar". What does this mean for me? I'm considering having my protagonist meet Carver and Garrett there. Not sure if Bethany was at the battle though.
2: The surname of Garrett on his mother's side was... wait for it... AMELL!!! Yes, Amell! If I hadn't opted for Surana in my fiction, my mage warden would have been related to Hawke. Like, awsomeness?
So, I'm considering having the Hawkes make a cameo appearance in my next chapter. Possible foreshadowing for a sequel to the "Crown of Throns" I'm currently writing perhaps?
What do you guys/ladies think?

The last story I posted on here I ended up editing 10 times before the text formatting was right, and then I had to add linebreaks.
But yay for chapter 91!

As I have said before, click on the BBC Code botton, paste, then click on BBC Again. And voila! Formatting issues are a thing of the past!

You'd still have to go through manually and add in any italics or other special formatting, though.Raonar wrote...

Yep. I find it easiest to put in the italics/bolds etc before pasting. This would be italic. This would be bold Just use square brackets [ ] instead of < >.

Some people think she is a cold ****.
Others think shes a **** but are a-okay with that.
and others still think there is a depth and complexity to the character that is barely scratched, but is still there, and decide to expand on it.
A good example is of the Dragon Age Comic's, they are in the world of Dragon Age. . . or it looks like it, but that world is not close to the world that is in the books or the games. In fact is one of the only think Card has done that I haven't really liked, and its because I honestly think, he only has down the cliff notes of Dragon Age.

So just wondering, but I am writing a story based on the origins timeline...and currently am writing the portion that occurs around the "Broken Circle" quest-line. Would it be considered poor form if I assume that anyone reading dragon age FF has played DA:O before and so doesn't really need everything explained to them - in particular I was looking forward to avoiding having to go on and on about how Uldred was possessed by a demon and blah blah blah....and just get on with the good stuff. Would that confuse anyone, you think, or would most readers be on board with knowing all that stuff already?
Personally, I would not consider that bad form, no. Fanfiction assumes that people who are reading your story are familiar with the game/movie/whatever it's based on and don't need the main elements explained -- we write for a specific audience.
...even if, at times, outsiders decide to wander in. And yes, it does happen. Any time an RL friend wants to read this 'fan fiction stuff' I warn them that a lot of it will probably go right over their heads. I don't know how far my sister-in-law got, but she said she liked chapter 1 of The Hunt.
As for spoilers...you'd *think* that a fanfic based on Awakenings would have spoilers for Awakenings, right? Are some people just *stupid*? (No need to answer that

I never have formatting issues and I just cut and paste from Word...
That has never worked for me without borking the formatting.
Now I just upload everything to ff.net and copy it from the preview screen. Once it pasted fine with everything how and where it should be. This last time it was far more stubborn but it eventually kept my italics (the most important and time consuming thing for me to fix) but left it as a solid mass of text.

Someone was ranting at me on YouTube for posting an endgame video. They choose to click on it and then are mad... whatever. People do stupid things, especially on the internetz.LupusYondergirl wrote...
I had it happen twice when I was still writing in the Awakenings timeline. One sent me an email saying she couldn't read anymore until she finished the game since I'd just spoiled part of it for her, I think that was halfway through. Another sent me a very angry email for "ruining" the ending since they hadn't gotten that far yet.
I couldn't even respond, I was too confused.
I assume most of the people reading DA fanfiction are players and so I try not to belabor game events or lore. I'll give a brief explanation, especially for obscure stuff, but I assume I'm writing for players. If someone else wants to look in, they can read the wiki to catch up I guess.

something interesting. The topic was on the difference between the
'hero' in American literature versus the 'hero' in European
literature. The main differences we were discussing was how the
American protagonist tends to be either quite literally young, or if not, then they're someone who refuses to grow up, and often an outsider who rails against tradition, authority, or society's institutions. Conversely, the European classics are often coming of age stories where the hero matures and becomes a part of society by the end.
I just thought that was funny since so much of the first would very easily fit my fic. I'd never intended it that way (and actually have read far more British literature than American), but there it is.
Just found it strange how much I must have internalized these cultural myths and ideals for them to show up even in fanfic. Without my realizing it or planning it I followed most every convention found in American lit. Especially since my academic concentration is Elizabethan Brit lit.
Anyways. I found it interesting and figured I'd share.

Interesting insight, so like Huckleberry Finn, Forrest Gump, the kid in Catcher in the Rye, Breakfast At Tiffany's etc vs Magic Mountain, David Copperfield, War & Peace (Pierre), Don Quixote etc
Hmmm. And I'm a Brit and my fic is about Ali/Surana growing up and adapting to their new roles in life.
Good uni course, I say. Stick with it Lupus...

Oh, I can definitely see that. I tend to be more fond of the former but, given that I'm American, I suppose that's not surprising. Just giving in and doing/being what everyone else expects of you always seems so depressing...LupusYondergirl wrote...
