Just because they were considered adults doesn't mean that she wasn't still not quite fourteen. She may have been expected to be more mature than thirteen-year-olds today but they are definitely characterized by stupid and hormone-driven behavior no matter what others might expect of them. And this play just further illustrated that.Sialater wrote...
Uh.. R&J were not teenagers by Elizabethan standards. They were grown ups and old enough to be married, just to whomever their families chose, not each other. Doesn't make their actions smarter, but they were adults back then, not "teenagers." Teens are a modern concept.

Just posted the first chapter of my fanfic at ff.net
So, now I come seeking advice. How all do you guys "advertise" your fics? I'm going to put a blurb and link in my signature. But what else? I assume submit it to the fanfiction synopsis thread?
Also, how do I get my link to actually come up as the fic name and not a long URL? I swear, I tried every option, including choosing BBCode in my profile settings and trying it the HTML way, and no go.

As far as advertising goes....I don't do much of it, unless someone in particular asks for a specific story/kind of story. But promoting myself always felt kind of strange, so I'm always reluctant to do so.
Congrats on getting the first chapter up though!

Is it bad that I'm squeeing so hard now? I can see this is going to be addicting...
And thanks, SandT!

Edit: You don't even want to know how excited I was the first time I posted a story and got a review. Of course, in my defense I was only thirteen, so...

Okay, cool. Wasn't entirely sure what the protocol was for fic posting. I feel like a 5-month-old puppy running around excited. I'll try not to accidentally pee on the thread carpet, I promise! lol
Edit: And I'm 25. I have no excuse other than little things make me so very happy. And I am incredibly easy to please.

Heh, I think I may have been the story alert. I'm running around FF.net and marking any serial story that I plan on reading. I actually read "The Hand We're Dealt" though... good opening. I especially like the exposition memories to get the stage set, the battle, and the argument. Very well done!
Heh, I noticed you marking mine, too. Hi!

jakkel dragon - yup, that was you, my first story alert! I saw the name and thought it looked familiar from the forums, but had trouble placing it. Tee hee...

Livejournal's a good place to pimp. (I just posted my blight-timeline story to the Zevran group about five minutes ago and already have two new story alerts)DragonRacer13 wrote...

I saw you're doing Tabris/Loghain so you would probably want the Loghain LJ and maybe the elf-centric one.

Ooooh...good idea Lupus (Is that shortening OK? I mean I know it means "wolf" or something, but I can't get "Lupus as a disease out of my head" Unless that is the meaning you were going for....of course....
I am such a noob to the DA community. I had no idea that so many different LJs existed...and I only found out about LJ in general a week or so ago.
Edited to say: PS - I agree with you that Zev's voice is a challenge to get down! I am both eagerly anticipating his entry into my story AND dreading it for the writing challenge it will give me at the same time.

I have SO MUCH trouble with Zevran. I really hope my last chapter isn't absurdly off-base. I could write Oghren until the cows come home (and would since I love Oghren), but every Zevran line makes me agonize!

Packing death about upcoming Zevran chapters in Shades, though, considering I'm going to try to touch on the whole Rinna thing. Serious Zevran is easier than witty Zevran, but it's still really, really hard to get his voice down.
Did Gaider write Zev? I have to applaud him for making him so difficult to bloody copy!

I'm not saying that you should ditch the Dragon Age universe, but it would be interesting to see you guys create your own characters, places, events and such, within the Dragon Age world. I'm just saying, the constant stuff on established characters and places really leaves little variation between individual stories (in my eyes, anyway).

Um, a lot of us do?
There's tons of post-game stories, AU stories, etc.
Shoot, my postgame story is at like 350K words and has dozens of original characters.

I was being far more fundamentalist in my definition, let me clarify; I meant a story that is based on original content- one that does not centre around any character, event (And to a lesser extent) location depicted in Dragon Age. A few original characters and locations thrown on top of a story based around things that appeared in the Dragon Age games doesn't really make it Original content; more like a story based around X with some Original Content thrown in.
Lynch me if I'm wrong, but nothing I've seen thus far seems to depart far from people or places the Warden met or travelled to in Dragon Age.

My story has, like, two original characters (and that's counting my PC). However, it takes place six years after the Blight and features established characters that are fairly removed from their game versions. Instead of making up a bunch of new people, I created a scenario and evolved them to fit said scenario. So it's Alistair and Anders, but it's Alistair who has been through a ton of crap and is broken and it's Anders who has settled quite a bit. I think they're distinct from what you get in-game and in other fics because of what has occurred in the time between game and story.
Besides, even before you fact in the convenience of having an established foundation of characters/setting to work with, one of the reasons people write fan fic is because they love the characters, or there are themes or places or possibilities throughout the game/movie/book/series that intrigue them and they want to expand upon it all, not just toss everything out and start over again with nothing but lore and setting.

There have been some interesting suggestions for stories around here though - one person was thinking about writing about Nevarran dragon hunters or something....oh dear, my memory is so bad....
A lot of post-blight stories have people going to different lands (Antiva, Free Marches....) which I think takes a lot of creativity because so little is known about these places!
Perhaps as the dragon age universe develops (especially as more information about dragon age 2 filters out) people will be getting even more creative. We shall see.
Edit: I really should just delete this whole post because I totally just wanted to say what Surely said in her last paragraph....but I just couldn't figure out how to word it. Oh well.

So... you're asking, on a forum for people who write fanfic, why we're not writing something other than fanfic, basically?
What?
Fan fiction is a broadly-defined term for fan labor regarding stories about characters or settings written by fans of the original work.
Dragon Age Fan-Fiction doesn't have to be solely about the Warden, or their companions; there's a whole continent that can be used, with hundreds of thousands of possibilities for some damn good work. There are so many possibilities, and we're just ignoring them!
In my eyes, it's like digging for coal when there's gold right next to you.

I mean, I could set a story in Rivain about mercinaries or something, using all OCs. But I could just as easily write something that's word for word identical, changing only the place names, and claim it as an original property.
You're asking why we don't write stories divorced from everything established in the game universe. The use of the established game universe is what makes it fanfic. Otherwise it's just, well, fic.

Don't get me wrong, lots of the work done is fantastic, and I'm not saying you should stop writing about established characters and such.
I'm merely saying there are many possibilities for good work beyond established characters; and it'd be great for people to start exploiting them.
