Really?  Now I am *really* glad I didn't continue that story.....how disappointing!

Dark Ritual has fantastic original characters. Lawler is my favourite, the recent developement, hell yeah!

True!  I also like Bergeth for her...mmm....saltiness?  Again though....just makes the point that PB stories definitely make it easier for an author to add new characters in.  :)

Have you read the last few chapters? That is not the case at all any more. Perrin and Markham are still about and still fabulous.

I finally posted chapter 17 and am awaiting angry reviewers to tell me I was an ass for giving them DA2 spoilers.

You might want to add a note with a disclaimer at the top. I generally do that if my fic includes spoilers to something other than the existing games (like the books).

Meh, I added one at the bottom, but there have been no flames yet, fortunately. The fact was that I was going to have my wardens be in Lothering DURING the darkspawn attack anyway, so it isn't unfeasible that the Hawkes would at least be sighted.

Meh, to each his own.

At the end? Wouldn't that mean that no one would be warned of the spoiler until after they had already been spoiled?

Hey, it's not really a spoiler actually, unless revealing the character names counts as one. It was just a line saying "It's not a spoiler, it's my own invention, so don't fret."

Hi fanfictioners. Just wanted to say thanks for the previous chat we had about the Tranquil many pages back. It underpinned my whole Andrei idea - and an article I pitched to GreyWardens.com who've decided to entrust me with a fortnightly "opinion sort of" blog. The first one was published today. http://ht.ly/2D4X2 Anyway, I didn't want someone here to read my blog, put two and two together (not that that is very likely, but still) and think I was coming here plying you guys for info and then using it for my own nefarious purposes. It didn't happen that way. I was just really interested in the Tranquil and it ended up spilling into a whole bunch of stuff I was working on. Having said that, you guys are the lore experts so I may come back and ply you for information again. :) Thanks again.

@Firky: you are always welcome here and Grey Wardens.com is a great site. Will have to check out your article.

That's nice, thanks. It's only short. I'm just going to contribute short, fortnightly bits or now. I'm SO overcommitted. AND I was just researching Might and Magic Heroes VI and it is coming out at the same time as DA2. That might be a problem. (For me, that is. I love the HOMM games.)

Thanks. Hmmm. I just had a squiz at it and it does look extra little. For some reason its put most of the article on a second page. Strange. Now looks like one tiny paragraph. That's funny. :)

Pleh. Off to bed. Tomorrow nights plan is to start reading Dark Ritual. I've been meaning to for ages.

You know, I swear I looked everywhere for the link to the second page because it looked so little. I couldn't find it anywhere, but managed to just now. Either I am blind, or someone updated the website while I wasn't watching. >.<

@ SoLD - I couldn't find it earlier either!! So you weren't alone in either enduring a sudden fit of blindness....or being an unfortunate visitor before they updated the site.

@Firky - Well done though! You brought up a lot of good questions and I really liked your writing style. Even more so I liked how you brought in the idea the game developers want people to "buy in". As a writer I kinda like the fact that some "buy-ins" are required...because they let me use my imagination on what would have happened if I could have done....*this* or *that*. Thanks for linking to that article by DG too! Enough blabbing from me - Again, good job on the article!

Edited because me no speak the Englishy good.

That's good feedback. Thanks. I've found David Gaider has lots to say on how to write for the player - or different types of player. I guess writing for your audience is always important?

Writing for your audience is ALWAYS important, whether it's a paper for class, the front page of the newspaper or a best-selling novel.

So... how do you convince yourself you don't suck when your inner troll is winning?

I don't convince myself I don't suck. I just take a break, maybe drink something persuasive or have some fun elsewhere. Then I sit back down, stare at the page, *flail* and think "F*ck it, I've put way too much effort into this damned thing to stop now." Eventually something comes out that I know doesn't suck that bad, and everything starts falling back into place.

Augh, that's always the worst! I generally tell mine to go sit and spin, personally. Tell it that often enough, I've found, and you get to feeling better enough to get past the slump.

Ultimately, even though there's an audience if you put your stuff out there, writing needs to be fun for YOU, first and foremost. if you are having fun writing, it will show IN the writing, and generally other people will enjoy it as well. If you're not having fun, then you're doing it wrong. Posted Image

I sympathize, though. I'm currently experimenting in a chapter of mine. I love reading humor and I'm trying to insert some into my story (need something to help show character bonding and to help break up the action/drama/angst). But I've been agonizing and re-writing it over and over. I will read it over one day and giggle myself silly. I'll read it over the next day and think, "Oh God, my story's already jumped the shark and it's only Chapter 5!" So, I'll try and finish up the experimental chapter and shoot it to my beta, who'll help me know whether I should continue my fledgling attempts at humor or not. Posted Image
Honestly, having a beta helps. I have one who's been an awesome "constructive cheerleader." If I'm feeling poopy about my abilities, I will go back and re-read reviews I've gotten or, more importantly, her beta emails and pump myself up.

But mostly, you've just gotta boot the inner troll in the rear.

LOL, "drink something persuasive".  I drown my troll with a fine Antivan red wine (I'm sure old vine Zinfandel counts) and feed it dark chocolate until it rolls over in submission.

@Dragonracer: sympathize on the trying to write humor - I've been trying to drop a little more in my story and I really struggle.  Zev snark isn't as hard because I think I have a pretty good handle on him, but trying to write more for my Warden and the other characters is something I wrestle with.  I agree with you on trying to lighten up dark, angsty fics though.  Mine will be really dark before I'm done and I've already had more than sufficient angst, I need to add a little fluff to make it less depressing.

It's mostly low numbers of hits on my ff.net account. And most definitely a lack of reviews.

I've beaten it back today... but it'll rear its ugly head again eventually.

Perhaps it' time for an evening out with someone who indulges in DA discussions and might even be a good sounding board/cheerleader. I recommend fried seafood and beer personally.  :D

Coffee and pancakes works too, tho.  LOL

Killing time on campus between classes on my iPhone so I can't quote.

Re: convincing self... I go back and read old reviews sometimes. Or I'll reread chapters or scenes I knew I liked and either feel better from that or figure out what that had that my current chapter might be missing.

I'm big on looking at specific lines or scenes people comment on. Since I don't have a beta that's the only feedback I get, really.

Re: humor. It can be a tricky thing givenhow dark the base material is. Too much and it reads as crazy because no realistic character will react that way. I love writing humor personally, but worry I have that problem at times. Maybe all the time... And then, on the other side, I agonize when I want to include anything darker since it feels so out of character.

You're writing does not 'suck'. Just FYI. The only quibble I can find with your writing is that there isn't nearly enough of it.
