You're writing does not 'suck'. Just FYI. The only quibble I can find with your writing is that there isn't nearly enough of it.

Perhaps it' time for an evening out with someone who indulges in DA discussions and might even be a good sounding board/cheerleader. I recommend fried seafood and beer personally.
Coffee and pancakes works too, tho. LOL
That would be my husband. And he has to say nice things, he's married to me. :innocent:
If your husband is anything like mine he can "tastefully" give critique and suggestions while still making you feel awesome. There was a reason you married him yes? lol
Don't let the low numbers get you down. It's still the first weeks of school so it could be that people are stuck in their lives and unable to read your stories.

Oh, I'm totally in the same boat right now for a myriad of reasons. There's the fact that I take forever to get over negative things and had some problems with that two weeks ago, the fact people never review, taking a writing class with a really harsh teacher, family problems, some contest issues...I'm going to try to force out a Zevran thread entry later today but I'm really not feeling motivated right now.Sialater wrote...

It's weird, usually I feel confident after a Zevran chapter. As if his ridiculous awesomeness has infected me. But y'all and brainstorming over The Shepard Project with my co-authors has really helped.
Meh, stupid troll.

I happen to like "What price, Victory" though I admit, I haven't read overly many.
Also, what kind of protagonist do you like reading about? (emotional, intellectual, manipulative etc.)?

I'll bite.
Of the small amount of fic that I have read, my favorite is Purpose. It's a Shale one-shot and I love it. Love it.
As for protagonists, realistic ones? They can be all or any of the above as long as they're grounded in reality somewhat.

I like a lot of them. I don't have a lot of time to read any more, but I've found a few gems.

The first is Love and Levirate which is an Alistair/Anora fic and shows what I think their marriage would be like.
The other a ME2 novelization fic, Fight for the Lost. It starts off as fairly good but gets much better the further you read and adds in alot of meat and substance in between missions.

I love Arsinoe de Blassenville's stories (Victory at Ostagar and The Keening Blade), Miri's stuff, I really enjoyed Cartography so I'm hoping there will be a followup soon...
There's more, that's just what comes to mind right away.
As for protagonists... I'm big on flawed main characters, but flawed in a realistic way. Someone who might be selfish, reckless, bigoted, dishonest, drink too much, have a bad temper, or be rude, or openly dislike party members, etc etc... But not someone who can't, you know, fight. Given the subject matter a slightly tougher than normal main character is only understandable and, imo, not Mary Sueism. After all, they were recruited by Duncan specifically because they were more skilled than the average person. So, I like flaws, but not someone so flawed they're not really functional as a person or capable as a Warden, if that makes sense. That would work in other sorts of fic, but it doesn't seem reasonable for me in the context of someone recruited to a legendary order of world-famous warriors.

I LOVE how Bioware changes their own canon at random so any of us who try and stick to it have to throw a dart and decide what they'll go by as true. So thank you, Witch Hunt, for your little outside exercise story that directly contradicts not one but THREE conversations you can have in the mage origin. Really. (and it's an anon review so I can't reply and point that out, either... or that the chapter they reviewed was posted way before the DLC came out.)

That being said, at least it's BioWare canon you're being called out on and not, say, another fic's handling of certain plot elements. <_<

That.... that makes my brain hurt.
(I've decided my new canon is that the exercise thing was tried once and Maggie had cramps or was on cleaning duty for breaking some rule or another that day.)

Well, we know that Anders is too old to be Fiona's son so that makes him a good bit older than the mage Warden. We don't know just how young of an apprentice he was when he first escaped or how old the apprentices had to be before being allowed outside for exercise so it could still work. Anders had ruined it for everyone by the time the mage Warden would have been old enough to experience it.LupusYondergirl wrote...
Aaarrrggghhhhh..... I just had someone leave me a review "helpfully" telling me I'm wrong because the Circle let the apprentices could go outside. A nice throwaway story from a banter in Witch Hunt that tosses a good chunk of my story into AU territory.

As for favorite stories...aside from those already mentioned there are:
Ridiculously Awesome by Mutive (with the most hilarious and awesome Surana ever)
You Said What Now? by Corvus Corone (which is a great parody featuring all origins)
The Stone Endures by Sparrowfall (which is a really unique and well thought out take on the DN origin)
One Good Turn by Meiran Chang (which manages to make both Goldanna and Alistair come off sympathetically and gives you hope for their future)
Beginnings by Jakia (just some drabbles about how many of the possible pairings in DA met. The Tamlen/Mahariel one is especially adorable)
Bring On The Wonder and Reclamation by arysani (the first has Loghain reflecting on baby Anora and is ridiculously adorable while the second has Rowan insisting on going with Loghain to tell Maric about Katriel in TST)

Oh, yeah. Besides general suggestions for how I should make a few characters just like they are in other fics, I've had someone tell me that Alistair was a pirate during his exile and that I was remiss for having not touched on that.
The other was in regards to how I should handle Bryce, which boiled down to "other fic has an apprentice mage living at Vigil's Keep so, if you're smart, you'll do it that way, too."

I get "helpful" plot suggestions that make very little sense in the context of my fic, but so far none based on what people have done in other fics. (I can't count how many times I've had someone say I should do a Nathaniel/Anders/Maggie love triangle. Just... what?)
Seriously, why would someone want two fics they read to do the exact same thing? Isn't most of the fun seeing all the different stories everyone comes up with?
In-fic I have him at about five years older than the Warden. (who I randomly decided was 22 at the start of the blight for no reason whatsoever beyond an absolute inability to believe Jowan was anything less than early twenties or so with that much stubble.)Well, we know that Anders is too old to be Fiona's son so that makes him a good bit older than the mage Warden. The age thing could work... maybe the over-10s were allowed to go out and Anders took off right after he came to the tower. Hmm...

I'm starting to think that what some people want is for people to write the fic that is in their own heads, instead of the one that is in the author's head. Maybe it's because I'm a life-long reader (though I suspect the same thing is true of a lot of the people I'm talking about) but I read a story to figure out where the story goes, not so that it goes where I want it to go. If it were otherwise, I wouldn't have this long running streak of my favorite characters always dying.
And maybe it comes out more in fanfic because of the chapter by chapter release basis, where one feels that they might somehow have more control over how a fic turns out. I've seen some people get pretty demanding over it though, which is just weird to me. I mean "OMG I hope you don't do X!" or "Nooooo, how could he/she!" is perfectly legitimate feedback, that's a reader getting caught up in the story. But "You should do X with this character" is just kind of strange...

It's not the author's fault that you have a problem with what they've done to a character or with the plot but there it is.
It might be the author's fault in rare cases. I swear, there is going to be hatred for what I'm going to put Alistair through...
And I have finally decided to go mildly AU. *Oghren happy dance!*
I'm tired of the good/bad/very good choices in DAO making it hard to plan out my story. So I'm not going to follow it to the letter. Alistair is going to freak...
