I think the chapter thing might be a part of it. It would be different if they read it all in one go but since it can take years for stories to finish maybe there's something that happens that is a deal-breaker. For instance, say someone could absolutely not read a story where Loghain lives past the Landsmeet. They start reading the story pre-Ostagar and 100+K later, Loghain is alive. As much as they love the story, they just can't get past it. That's a lot of time and energy they invested into a story they can't bring themselves to finish now. Granted, nobody FORCED them to read it but for complete stories they could at least check the reviews or last few chapters to see if the deal-breaker occured or not. It's always disappointing when you hit something you just can't get past. It's not the author's fault that you have a problem with what they've done to a character or with the plot but there it is.
Yeah, I understand that. Completely. I'm the person who likes to pretend that most of seasons 6 and 7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer never happened. But it doesn't change the fact that I really enjoyed almost everything up until that point, and I would certainly never write to Joss Whedon and take him to task for what he did in his story (now, a certain event in Serenity almost made me do just that, but I was under great emotional duress...).
I have been tempted several times to just finish my story and then post the rest all at once. I feel like having the ending there for reference would keep people from wasting their time on something they know isn't going to go the way they want. And I have to admit that I'm exactly the sort of person who looks ahead if something is suddenly not working for me, so it just seems like it would be fair.
