oh, this is fun. My laptop keyboard has decided at random to stop working. Lovely. (I'm on my desktop now).

My next two chapters were almost done, on said laptop.

Shut it down, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds. Then put the battery back in and see if that helps. My keyboard did the same thing a month or so ago (cue me freaking right out) and that worked perfectly.

no dice so far. Pretty sure it's my fault. I got crud on it when I was eating lunch while working and tried to clean it myself. So I either broke the keyboard or knocked something lose. Ugh.
Trying to hunt down a ride to take it to my repair person.

The chapters, while annoying, aren't as bad as the long paper on Oscar Wilde I have almost finished that's due on Friday.

Laptop at repair shop. Now... to rewrite chapters or wait. Hmmm...

(my professor, who I lovelovelove, told me if I have a receipt for the repair as proof I can just hand in my paper when I get my computer back so I won't have to start over.)

I've had him for two other classes, and done very well in both, so I think he knows me well enough to know I'm not going to bull**** him. It isn't due for another few days, either, which may help, since I wasn't mailing him at the zero hour. I presented it as "I can rewrite but since I was almost completely done I'd really rather not."

I passed my ending so long ago. I think I have a new one in mind, though. My story doesn't have a... plot, per se. It's just kind of an ongoing soap opera of darkspawn killing and smut.

I like this too, but as a beginner I'm tied to plot but happy for it, I hope.Posted Image

My story's set in Origins and Awakening, so I've already got structure. Then I outlined a bunch of other plotlines I want to explore. Then I outlined the ending and some... excuses for a certain event late in the story.

Now I'm stuck with trying to keep Duncan from strangling Tayte. I may just skip to Ostagar...

Yes, I was determined to do a post game fic so I have had to find my own structure, which it seems I have and so far seems to be working well...  I know what needs to go into the last chapter of DR and what's going to happen in the first chapters of the follow on as well as how it all ends... Gives me something to work towards...

Yay!  Sounds promising.

Post game is much harder, I admire the originality.

I did all that. Then I came up with another idea, and then another, and then another. My current idea file will have me ending somewhere near a dozen years after the blight.
I fully expect something else to occur to me as well.

Watch out, it could happen to you!

Reviews...

So, how does one handle a semi-anonymous review?

I got a most wonderful, long, thought-out review in my inbox today. It was extra special to me for two main reasons: 1) It was from someone whose first language is NOT English, and he/she was praising me on how I managed to write something very detailed and vivid that they were able to easily understand even though they are not a native speaker (something that never would have occurred to me!) , among other very nice things, and 2) it's the longest and most detailed review I have received so far.

I just finished writing back all my other reviewers, but this person (who did sign a name, so not truly Anonymous (I allow anonymous reviews) does not have a ff.net account nor a Bioware account (but says they lurk on these forums, too). How can I reply back to this person and sincerely express my gratitude for their thought-out review? I have seen other fics where authors might do shout-outs to their reviewers during their Author's Notes (usually at the top of the next chapter), but that just seems... I dunno, a bit 'meh' to me. I was able to reply directly back to everyone else, so I don't want to just call one person out. Maybe a blanket 'thank you' to reviewers and specifically address the semi-anonymous reviewer very briefly at the end of the Author's Notes?

What say you, more experienced fanfic writers?

I don't always answer every review I get but if I, say, get a question in an anonymous review for a chapter story I'm still writing, I'll put the answer in the author's notes. Of course, then you get people reviewing and saying that if people are that unobservant and ask such stupid, obvious questions then you should just let them wallow in confusion...

I have one of those, too, DragonRacer. She said she was tempted to sign up here to discuss my story in its thread, but she hasn't yet. I haven't given her an Author's Note shout out as I don't know how comfortable she'd feel about it. However, if she never signs up here or there, I'm going to go ahead and dedicate the last chapter/story to her because, seriously, she is sometimes the only reason that I don't say "f*ck it" and walk away.

On another topic: I forced myself to do certain things in my story so I wouldn't be able to drag things out or wuss out on the ending. Not that I particularly want to drag things out. I'm 80% done and the epilogue cannot get posted soon enough.

Zevran just wants to keep going. Yes, I'm blaming him. He wants to invade my IP and inhabit the body of a (formerly) throw away character, Zev's gonna deal.

It's all his fault.

I would use the author's notes thing myself, DragonRacer13. You could list all the names you want to thank, and say an 'extra special thanks for the extra large review from X' (or something) for your anon poster, so no one gets left out and you single out the one you want. :)

Edit: Nothing keeps Zev down, Sia... >.>

I didn't even realize that I was listed in the Zev thread as a "Zev writer," until this morning. I squeed. Pimping I didn't have to do myself! YAY!

Just a little thing I've been curious about, but does anyone have any estimates of how large the DA FF reader  base is?

@Sia congrats! Always a good feeling to have your work recognized like that! :)

Looking at the traffic I would guess it is a good size and diverse. I know I am always tickled to see someone from a distant country read my stuff.

Same here.  I'm always surprised by the breakdown of countries represented, too.  Just checking now I'm surprised to see Germany, Sweden, and Russia all seem to like Maggie more than Canada.  I figured countries where English is the primary language would top the list, but nope.

Geography is not my strong suit - at all - and so I continually get hits from countries that I was not aware existed. Qatar, Turkmenistan, Saint Martin, Mauritus, Reunion...I'm actually having a bit of difficulty accepting that that last one is a real country name but Google assures me that it is. The US always dominates my hit count. Right now, for instance, I have over six times as many US hits for this month as I do for the second-highest country which is Great Britain. Canada does come in third, though.

I have a couple in Iran. That... confuses the hell out of me. I thought the internet was really, really heavily censored there.

OK, I'm looking at my stats, and I can't figure out what the difference is between a hit and a visitor....
