OK, I'm looking at my stats, and I can't figure out what the difference is between a hit and a visitor....

Visitors are how many different people go on it (although if you, say, access the story on two different computers then it will mark you down as two different visitors unless you're logged in both times) while hits are how many times someone has clicked on your page. If you have a five chapter story someone reads in one sitting then they will add one visitor count and five hit counts.

Hits are total clicks, visitors are unique viewers. So, say you had a day with 2000 hits and 1000 visitors (ever notice your visitors are almost always about twice the hits?)... that would mean you actually had 1000 people reading, but they might have read more than one chapter each, or clicked on the link twice, or clicked on the story title and then the most recent chapter, or the most recent chapter and the review page... etc etc.

Does that make sense?

(on edit: Or like Sarah said in way less confusing terms than I used )

LOL, thanks. I have the obvious greater hits/visitors in the US, second is UK... and apparently Aussies like me more than Canadians.  And Poland (Poland???) rounds out my top 5.

Mine are US, UK and... Romania? Romanians must really like smart dwarves O.o

Then there's Canada, the Philippines and New Zealand and only THEN Australia.

That's for this month anyway.

I get readers from Romania too, and some places I cannot pronounce nor have I ever heard of.

US, UK, and Sweden are the top three this month for feisty Dalish elf stories.

US, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany, I also have one unidentified and one from Vietnam...

I think word of mouth must be important, someone visits and then goes to class and says "Dude, I read this awesome fic..." and cue, four more readers....

This right here is why I will be waiting a looooong time to write a stick-to-canon story as there are just way too many open questions. I understand why BW has left it as open-ended as it has, as its great for the franchise...but kinda sucky for ff writers who like working within clearly defined boundaries. I have utmost respect for the writers who actually try really hard to stick to canon, as I can only imagine how much research must be done, and constant watching of the DA boards for a post by a dev that would completely destroy their story.

AU is so much easier to write. :D

Holy crap, I really need to finish my story before Gaider says much more.

And I don't think templars not taking vows of chastity makes the Cullen/mage romance any less "forbidden". Well, maybe on a technical level, but I think there's enough indication in the game that the indoctrination the templars go through, and the level of (violent, in some cases) fanaticism encouraged, is enough to make up for the lack of policy expressly forbidding them from screwing around, especially with mages.

I always thought the policy, for most, military type units in Ferelden was something like we see in our own culture. No screwing around in the ranks. Sure our military men and women can marry one another but it is frowned upon. I always figured the Templars weren't exactly celibate, after all..Alistair will go to bed with you. But if the mentality is more like Alistiar's..no sex without love, it isn't any wonder that the Templars appear to be celibate. Combined with the fanatic viewpoint on mages, it makes perfect sense. But, Templars are people too so would have feelings of longing and lust just like anyone else. Cullen struggling between his teachings and duties as a Templar and his desire for a mage isn't that hard to imagine.  NOW, thinking of the Circle as a giant High School with all its antics makes me cringe inwardly. Oh Wynne you naughty girl!!!

Speaking of mages. I'm being horribly unfaithful to my ongoing story but taking the time to write about a family of apostates. A random encounter on the road with all the companions. The Warden and Alistair run across a hedge mage who has children and is running from the Blight and Templars. I thought it would be interesting to see the possibly thoughts of the likes of Alistair, Leliana, Wynne, and Morrigan at what to do with a woman who can cast magic and her two young kids who are magically inclined too.  :)

Gaider says, a few posts down, that fraternization between templars and mages is forbidden. It's just a rule, not a vow that the templar takes. Apparently a templar could hop the boat to Lake Calenhad and go looking for a good time without breaking any sworn oaths. However, it also sounds like culturally it might be seen as a sign of a weak mind and is almost certainly a sin - it's just a misdemeanor rather than a felony.

Heh, this is why I had Cullen leave the Templars.   Hope he didn't screw you up too badly, Lupus.

It's ok. Gaider says he doesn't read fanfic, so he won't care what we screw up, I guess. :P

Yeah, but we're playing in his sand box. I'm not sure how I'd feel about other writers playing with my characters. He's not pitching a fit, that's all we can ask. ;)

Imitation is the sincerest form of flatery...so I hear. B)  (Depends upon what kind of guy he is.) But you are correct....the fact that we can play in the same box is nice. Even if the sand has different colors.

Wikipedia actually has a fascinating entry on "fanfiction" - at the bottom it has the views of various authors on people using their works (JK Rowling and Stephanie Meyer love it - ugh, I hate putting those two authors in the same sentence...Meyer *doesn't* deserve it!)  While Anne Rice, Anne McCaffrey, and Raymond Feist actively prevent people from writing their own stories about the worlds these authors created.

In a way I can understand actual authors not wanting other authors to encroach on their territory...but I imagine people in the gaming industry love it because it keeps the fan base alive.  Reading a book/story and playing a game, while both are entertaining, they are entertaining in different ways.  Reading great fanfiction is probably not going to make you more interested in following the work of a specific writer instead of playing the game it is based on, which I imagine might be a possibility when the FFdoms revolving around the works of authors.  IE - fans start to follow the work of a great ff writer instead of buying the next book written by the original world creator.  There are soooo many great ffwriters out there - and the fact that readers can interact with them probably heightens the appeal even more!

So yeah.  It wasn't even asked for, but I wanted to avoid doing homework, so there's my .02 on ff....

I already got a few reviewers (read: 2) that said I made them play the game again. :D

So, I guess Bioware should be all giddy if anything else.

Marion Zimmer Bradley once bought a lot of really well-written fanfiction and turned it into an anthology for her Darkover series. So yeah.. some authors don't mind it. And to be honest, I probably won't mind it either, given my current hobby.
