He found it off a dead dwarf corpse. Liked how it glowed, and how the corruption seemed to be afraid of it (IE it would shrink back from the sword's blade). This was right after he went to Ortan Thaig and before he met up with the Legion of Dead, who let him keep the sword.

Don't know the answer to the second question. :)

Aha, my thanks. Ortan Thaig eh? I wonder if we'll ever find out what the deal with it was. (read: Backstory, probably some Grey Warden had it).

I got the impression that it didn't have a huge backstory, it seemed like it was just the body of someone who died when the Thaig fell, and that was their sword.

One of the great things about dragon age: They leave soooo much open for FF writers to put their own spin on things. It sounds like your muse is thinking of making a backstory, hmm?

All it really says it was found on a dwarf corpse, with rocks covering it so its unknown if the dwarf was trying to hide it or rocks just sort of fell on the hand with the sword. The armor on the corpse was apparently nothing really great.

For writing purposes, as an aside, the sword also makes an "unpleasant keening" sound when near corruption...and as you've noted will glow blue. Don't know how much is relayed about the sword in the game...

Not exactly sure I'll write a backstory. I'm writing a Duncan death scene and am thinking of having him mention how Maric got it (he befriended Maric during the Calling if I heard correctly, so i guess he would know).

And I really think it should have a backstory. I mean, it's one of THE greatest weapons in the world of Dragon Age (I try to disregard game mechanics that state expansion weapons HAVE to be better than the others).

He actually tells Duncan about the sword in The Calling, but it's not very detailed- "I found it in the deep roads. I used to find magical swords," something like that.

(If you haven't read the books I highly recommend them. In addition to just being good, they're a huge source of info for the world lore)

I also recommend the books. Just try to read them in order. I spoiled the climax of The Stolen Throne by reading The Calling first... (It was the book available to me, so I read it. Maric's a badass either way.)

Wait, so it's pretty much a rip-off of Tokein's high-elven blades (Glamdring, Orcrist, Sting...) that glow with a blue and white flame when orcs and other such nasties are nearby? ;D

The plain and simple truth is that fantasy lore is so saturated with reaccuring themes that it's unsurprising to find connections to other stories. Besides the cool factor dictates that swords glow awesome colors and have mystic powers! Muaaahhhhaaaa

Ah!  Sting!  For the life of me I couldn't remember that sword's name in LOTR.  The whole time I reread that passage in "The Stolen Throne" I was like "This sounds really familiar...Wait, didn't the hobbitses have a sword like that?"  Thanks for the name reminder, Shadow.  :)

And I agree (If I can assume for a moment the point underlaying your post), it really is amazing how many fantasy plot ideas/items can be traced back to LOTR.  It almost seems that a lot of fantasy worlds are merely extreme AU versions of Middle-earth....Or at the very least they draw on the basic ideas of it.

Oh look, another world of elves, dwarves, and humans, and a horde of evil controlled by a single rather mysterious being threatens to destroy all that is "good."  Hmmm...Where have I heard this before....?

But I am sure this point as been made a million times over, so I will cease my prattle...

I still <3 DA though!  :wizard:

edited to say:  Yeah!  Ditto what KSuri said!!

I think the real reason why everything comes back to LotR is that it's become the definition of fantasy to many people. Tolkein mostly used real-world myths from Celtic and Norse culture to craft Middle-Earth (English for Midgard, a Norse name for the world.) Sadly, it seems many people (myself included) tend to crawl back to Tolkein because all the "staples" of fantasy are seen in his work.

Anyone here play Jade Empire? That's fantasy, but no Tolkein. Surprisingly, it is possible to write fantasy without copying Tolkein or using the same base myth, it's just not often done anymore.

I do have to admit that I'm a Tolkein fanboy. I actually read "the Children of Hurin" because I like Tolkein's work (the story's a tradgedy, very sad near the end.) Still never read the last book of LotR though...

So... long story short: people like Tolkein, people write fantasy, people write Tolkein.

(PS: Has anyone else read all of "the Hobbit" more than seven times? Just wondering... Hoping I'm not alone...)

I find that to be way too common after Zoroastrianism... Posted Image

Everywhere, in my experience. Posted Image Some people can't even pull it off half as well as Tolkein though... Posted Image At least Dragon Age adds it own twist to the concepts...

I have three words.

Allies for Gondor.

ayup.

I was FORCED to read the LOTR trilogy and the Hobbit as a child. (although I've probably read them all over a dozen times voluntarily since then) Normal kids have to read, what, the bible or something? Not in my family. I'm lucky, though. My half-brothers are named after Tolken characters. I came FAR too close to being a Galadriel.

(and here I am a video game playing fantasy-obsessed geek. I thought girls were supposed to turn into their mothers? Somehow I've become my father. Creeepy.)

One is named Aragorn. The other has the middle name Elessar. Which was the name Aragorn ruled under after he was crowned.

I've written 7k words of fanfiction this Friday/Saturday, but sadly none of it was Dragon Age related.

Sheesh. I can relate to that. My dad is a big gamer who read me LotR when I was WAY too young. The Black Riders gave me nightmares until I was 22.

My mum named me after the main character in The Thorn Birds, though. Sigh. I'd like to say "Probably better than being called ...." but I'm having trouble recalling ANY Lord of the Rings female characters. Why is that?
