OMG, I just got my first review where somebody said they cried in reaction to a sad/moving scene I wrote.

*squees*

*spontaneously combusts*

This stuff is so freaking addicting... lol

If you want it to last, learn to master it.

People who get addicted to reviews from writing inevitably tend toward writing for reviews, padding stories not with their own thoughts and creativity but merely aiming for cheap applause with tired monickers and jokes and specific-appeal ideas. It's the sort of mindset that leads people to insist on injecting 'romance' into stories that don't need them, because simply listing a pairing gets them more positive reviews from fans of that pairing. In short, quality goes down, even as short-term positive reviews go up.

A stellar piece of writing will attract applause on its own. Don't seek it out: it cheapens the work, and you as a writer when you are controlled by the reviews, not the other way around.

So congratulations, but take care.

Dean, I just have to say I really really appreciate your little words of wisdom that you sometimes say here on this thread.  It helps bring me back to reality.    And I agree with you wholeheartedly.

*****:o***** (Needed to add break, because I totally change my tone from serious to fangirl squee...Yes I know this kinda contradicts my previous statement of being grounded.  Oh well)

In other news....OMG, DA had an official-like fanfiction contest?!?!  With prizes?   Anybody here know anybody who actually won, or know these fantastic writers FF handles?

Here's  the link if anyone is interested....

Can't wait to have the time to skim through the winners....I just browsed through the Grand Prize Winner's short....and I can definitely see why they won!  B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L.  Especially because I was just so recently looking for ideas along those lines....hmmm....

DragonRacer: Congrats! :) It's good to know when your work evokes emotion.

Futile: I hadn't heard about that either. *browses rules*

All contest entries become the property of ICA Solutions, Inc., d/b/a Epic Weapons may use any of your entry for any purpose whatsoever, without further compensation to you.

Hm. I think I'd rather keep my own intellectual property than (possibly) get a DA sword. It may be fanfiction, maybe it makes me weird, but there it is. :P

(I had a quick glance over the winning entry and all I could think was wallllls of texxxxxxt. Maybe I'll try reading it later when I drink more coffee.)

Maybe I spoke too soon.  I really liked how it started out.  But the winning entry kinda lost me at the end....Brought up some interesting concepts though, and mega kudos for the creative idea behind it all.

A bit late on the writing for the sake of reviews discussion but what Dean said is true. Writing for reviews is a really bad idea. Getting reviews is nice and can make you feel good, unless you get some real stinkers (been there, done that) And make no mistake you will sooner or later get a review that will tear your writing apart without giving you any logical reason as to why it was so bad or how to improve. And it hurts when that happens, a lot.

Quite some time ago I was on the receiving end of such a review and I was not a happy camper. After I'd had calmed down a little and talked it over with some friends who were also fan fiction writers we came to pretty much the same conclusion, the person who had left the nasty review for the particular chapter had been expecting smut and when they didn't get it they pretty much threw a temper tantrum.

The best thing to do is write for yourself, which is what I suspect most of us do. If you have a particular tale you want to tell, tell it.

Oh, I definitely write for myself, first and foremost. Already have the whole thing planned out, so reviews aren't going to alter that. It's just that I'm honestly still a bit mesmerized that other people actually enjoy my writing. lol

I write bad reviews all the time. Unfortunately they are always for my own writing. I write because I must. It is nice when other people enjoy what you write.

*HUGS* Gil, welcome back!  Will help you kick RL - sometimes it needs it.

About reviews, good, bad or otherwise.  Good reviews are great, they feel good when you get them, but the best reviews, good or bad, tell you specifically what the reader liked or didn't like.   Was the dialog effective, did the twist in the chapter work the way it was planned, have commas attacked and run rampant again?  These are the things that help to improve our writing.  I recently had a series of reviews that I really appreciated, not because they were long, but because the reader made some very accurate guesses about upcoming chapters based on the foreshadowing I had provided - that felt good.

I'd agree with that so long as the new title is "Real Life Sucks and My Boss is a Biatch...":wizard:

*Ahem*

So, I do realize I rarely drop in here, what with considering myself too cool to dabble in the self-congratulating party and all, (kidding! kidding!) but I do have something I'd weigh other people's input.

In my Noblesse Oblige collection, in the latest one I made mention that, thanks to some Dark Ritual/bloodmagic/let's leave it vague, male Cousland and Anora have a daughter. A daughter who will likely appear in some future Codex or another...

after I figure out a good and appropriate name. So far all I can think is the first and middle name being after Cousland and Anora's mothers, but I thought I'd dabble and see what other people think.

I really like this site for names - lots of older English/general European names, which seems to be the trend for DA humans.  For instance Teagan, Eamon, and Wynne are all real names, just not really used anymore.

I've used that site, too!

I also use my mythology books for names. Fenian and Ulster cycle provide some great Celtic names. You could probably get most off Wikipedia.

(I had an Uncle Eamon so that one isn't completely died out. It's just the Irish version of Edmond/Edmund)

Everything I'm writing today is coming out clunky. I've tried writing a romantic scene and it's come out as though the Rock'Em Sock'Em robots were trying to get it on. Where did my words go?

Are you listening to the proper music?  I've been trying to write the same smut scene for like two hours and realized, oh, just now that the music I was listening to did not exactly say sexytimes to me.

Time to break out the Lords of Acid.  (Really, it's Zevran smut so I should have gone to that immediately)
