I hate typos! Really really hate them! I just looked at a story I wrote a while back and it was riddled with the pesky things. I can proofread other people's writing, why do I suck so much at proofing mine?
/Vent
Proofing your own writing is incredibly difficult. It's something, I believe, that's actually been scientifically proven. If it's your own writing and your own idea, your brain already knows what you mean to say. So, it's easy to gloss over mistakes and typos because your brain is reading what it already knew it wanted to say. If that makes sense.
Whereas, when reading someone else's writing, it's new to your brain and much easier to pick out typos.
That's why authors have editors, after all. A different pair of eyes ALWAYS needs to look over something you've written.
But I feel your pain. I consider myself very adept at spotting and fixing typos, even in my own writing. My beta is more for making sure I'm staying in-character and not completely jumping the shark on anything, moreso than for catching typos. So, an occasional one still sneaks by. Now, what I DON'T understand is how the brain can read and re-read a chapter and miss a typo... but will see it after you've posted the thing live on the Internet! I thought I had my two current chapters perfect... and then spotted one minor typo in each. So, guess I'm good for one typo a chapter.

I have to say that proof-reading is a hellovalot easier if done on paper, but I never do that for fanfiction.
This is also very true. Again, I think it's just something in the way the human brain works... reading from a computer screen is just honestly a bit different than reading a piece of paper. Heck, my English professors used to always tell us to print our papers to proofread them... not to just trust proofreading them on the monitor.
And you know, they were right. I almost always found things in the printed version that I'd missed when simply looking at it on the screen.

I found reading out loud helps, maybe not so much with typos but with general flow and sentence structure. It makes your brain think about the writing differently.
Though there are some passages I've gotten past having to write with my eyes closed, but still don't think I could read them out loud.

I'm constantly checking the wiki for lore references, other sites for general historical references, etc etc. I'd be lost without the internet.

Asking people on this site can also come in handy. Just today, for instance, I was writing something and I couldn't think of what Shale would call Anders and so someone here (SurelyForth) came up with something for me.
Agreed. Sometimes I have to go running to my beta to test plot ideas I'm not entirely certain are going to work.

*raises hand* Guilty as charged.
Luckily in my line of work I have access to medical lit, so the details on pregnancy & complications are pretty easy for me to gather. The real problem was isolating the loopholes in existing canon that allowed me the wiggle room I needed to legitimize a Grey Warden pregnancy... but I found five.
After that, I had to branch out to the interwebs to compile the science I needed to support where I wanted to go with whichever one I was working with at the moment, which is really more for me probably but I like to have the logic worked out for my own sanity.
Another good resource is youtube, since I can usually find game clips to refresh my memory on game details without having to go back and load old save files. The only thing I had problems finding were Loghain-as-secret-companion bits, and I eventually broke down and loaded Sylfie to play it through *cries at the memory*. And of course I have the two prequel books handy for reference.
The DA Wiki is slim pickins' still for all three of those particular items.

Yes. I'm a land secretary for an oil company. Which means I'm sorta like a REALLY specialized paralegal. Doesn't require a whole lot of imagination or creativity. But at least I have unfettered internet.

Yes. I'm a partner in a real estate title examination firm and a real estate attorney. Both roles require lots of attention to detail, great research skills, and zero creativity. The only saving grace is working from home.

Aaarrrggghh! Did I hit my head and forget how to proofread today?
Days like this are when I wonder if I should get a beta.
Fixed that, too.
Can I blame Dostoevsky for this? I think I'd like to. Discussing Crime and Punishment for three hours today has caused part of my brain to shut down.
When I finish my PhD can I have their job?
I would definitely blame Dostoevsky. I know I always walk around in a bit of brain fog after reading/dissecting/writing about his books and philosophy.

My job is talking to cancer patients. While rewarding on one level...very very difficult on another. Or they have lost their insurance and are about to lose everything because they can't work or got fired...yeah.. and breast cancer awareness month is next month and we are swamped with calls. I am soooo brain dead right now, and I want to write and get Anders his Pounce. I dont' think it is going to happen tonight. *sigh* or can I do Soignee's FFFFFFfffffffff
