Heh I think it's funny (interesting) how everybody says Alistair is Fiona's child. I haven't seen anybody say he definately is. The only thing I've seen is that he was initially suppose to be 30 something but they changed him to younger because it wouldn't make sense that a 30 year old would give up command to a newb grey warden. From what I understand there were some other changes made to make the game more plausable. I always like the idea that my hero (noble or mage) maybe the offspring of Fiona and Maric.

It's pretty strong fanon that Alistair is Fionaspawn.  The end of The Calling fairly screams "baby Alistair," what with Duncan looking in on the child, him looking like Cailan/ Maric, being told he had a human mother and that she was dead, etc.  Gaider correcting the timeline on Alistair's and Cailan's ages points to it, too, as well as Maric's personality not being one to idly sleep around.  Always possible, of course, until the Maker says yay or nay.

I think the gameplay hints at it as well, Alistair shows quite a lot of favour to females of other races and I can't find any other explanation for his codex'ed fascination with magic...

He might've but they're all dead.  His entire house joined Branka's and followed her into the Deep Roads.  No wonder the man drinks himself silly.

Does it ever say that his house joined Branka's?  He joined Branka and founded a new house, I thought, and that was the house that was destroyed.  So I was under the impression that Oghren had come from a different house that was still intact but technically wasn't a part of that house anymore.

Oghren never directly mentions siblings.  only that both his parents drank too.

Somewhere it does say that house Kondrat joined en totale with House Branka.  I can't remember if it's a codex or when you talk to Lollinar (sp?) or what, but yeah.  All of Kondrat joined Branka, and all but he went to the Deep Roads with her later.

Oghren lost his house rank later, of course, but there wasn't any house left anyway.  So that was one of those 'strip you of your rank' bits that was more humiliation than actual affect.

One of the guards (I think that guy in the diamond quarter) tells you his house joined hers.

I'm not intending for the general public to find out. But yes, cautious is the way to go I think. I'm not even sure if Fiona would tell him under these circumstances. I want her to, but I actually don't think she would. I'll have to find some motivation for it...[/quote]

This.

Fiona, based on where she was left in The Calling, would not admit to Alistair to being his mother unless there was a damn good reason.  Hell, she wouldn't even come out of Wardencity to see him unless there were a damn good reason.

And my guess is that whatever compelling reason there would be to force her to tip her hand to such a thing would also be compelling enough to make Alistair believe her when she admitted it.  A hardened Alistair, upon hearing the backstory, would probably be pretty forgiving; and unhardened Alistair might turn a bit petulant, in which case I could see Fiona tell him to pull his big-boy panties on and deal with it already.

It's also MHO that the rest of Ferelden wouldn't care as much about the parentage as people seem to think they might.  Fiona may have been an elf and mage, but she was also a Grey Warden who helped save Maric's life.  Plot wise, just get the Chantry involved to play up the divine intervention of the Maker in making the impossible happen by granting Maric another son by a Grey Warden (of all things), toss in a bit of "it was meant to be" & "ender of the Blight" and you can easily have the Grand Cleric soothing over any rumpled feathers with the masses by playing the religion card (which I seem to recall being done in The Stolen Throne as well...).

The nobles might be a bit pissy, but it's not like any of them haven't fathered bastards by elf women before.  Just have Eamon exert some pressure in that area and you're all good.

Question to writers:

Do you have trouble talking (aloud!) to people about your creative endeavours? Would you say you keep pretty quiet about it, make some humble response, or do you wax eloquent?

I would enjoy discussing the material & bouncing ideas if I had someone to discuss it with; alas, I do not.

The people IRL that I want to read my stuff and give me concrit "don't have time" to read it.  My mom has time, but refuses to read it because it's not my original IP; she will only read something I write if it's 100% original mine, and completely misses the fact that I'm writing for the first time in like... 20 years.

My Fiance listens to me rant about writer's block and being frustrated with the audience, but he's not allowed to read my stuff because he WILL tease me about it and we both know it.  And since he is incapable of comprehending that my writing is my achilles heel and would probably tease me to the point of tears rather than being helpful, it's better to just not go there.  Plus he absolutely hates Alistair.  So.... yeah.Posted Image

Where would Eamon be exerting pressure? Posted Image
Seriously, I wouldn't want Eamon involved if I was a Ferelden (but with my current knowledge). For a guy that was half-dead for over a year, he's pretty shrewd. 'Cause nothin' screams "innocent idealist" more that staging a riot because you lost a debate...

I agree completely on Fiona not wanting to reveal herself to Alistair except in extreme circumstances. In fact, that gave me an idea for a story... maybe a spin-off of my current story.

About the Stolen Throne religion thing: I went "lulz" near the end of the story. Nothing says "loyalty" more than telling the future king to **** off, then singing his praises two years later.

In a completely unrelated note... how many guys actively post in this thread?

Given that losing the debate meant that Loghain called for his execution as well as that of (at the very least) the Warden and Alistair's, can you really blame him? It was a self-defense riot.

I'm looking at the toolset files now... (Unfair advantage for the Wynne.)

Heh. You're right; he was kind of working in self-defense. Still not innocent idealist, but I suppose Eamon's not the type to go quietly.

Still, I always see Eamon as the puppetmaster. Here's why:

*Pre-Eamon Revive*
Alistair: I'm Maric's son.
Warden: You can be king!
Alistair: But I don't wanna!

*Post-Eamon Revive*
Eamon: Alistair will be king.
Alistair: But I...
Eamon: DO IT NAO!

I may also be infatuated with a certain Loghain line:

Loghain said...
You would put a puppet on the throne and every soul here knows it. The better question is who will pull the strings?

Eamon insisting that Alistair take the throne the instant Loghain's head isn't comletely attached to his body doesn't help him either. At least let the head fall to the ground before opening your sneaky mouth...

Yes, and his very next line accuses you of working for Orlais. I love Loghain and am pretty indifferent about Eamon but you have to keep in mind that Loghain seems to think that you'll be manipulating Alistair, not Eamon. Since Eamon's chancellor unless you are, he's more likely to try but that's not what Loghain's saying.

Right. Now I have to think of a good reason for Fiona to tell Alistair. I'm shamelessly digging for ideas here. She will definitely tell Neria. Maybe if it somehow comes out that the serving maid everyone THINKS was Alistair's mother actually couldn't physically have been someone will have to out her? But that would mean the general public would have to know as well...

Well, Alistair overhearing a conversation (perhaps between Fiona and Neria since the latter knows) concerning the matter seems the easiest way but that might be cliché.

Strange hereditary illness, maybe? Or you can do something to him involving the taint because of what happened to her during her pregnancy. He may be immune to the calling, too... or get it much sooner. Something like that. Maybe the Weissuahpt mages just figured out what might happen.

Or cut BOTH of them from the loop.  Have Neria talk to Miranda about it.  I can imagine her feeling horrid that Fiona would be so close to her son and not able to say, and think Alistair would regret it forever if he missed a chance to actually speak with his mother.

Ah, Lupus, sounds good. But now I'm thinking that Anders is going to put his foot in it somehow. Because that seems fitting, given the relationship between the two of them :)

Oh absolutely. He is totally a gossip, no doubt there. Oh, you could even have him blurt it out in some absurdly inappropriate manner.

Recently and regularly? Few to no men, unfortunately. The creative writing fandom of DA:O seems to lean quite heavily towards women...in this thread at least. I'd make a bet that most of the trolls we've seen have been guys though. ;D

To my knowledge it's not mentioned, although he does say he has (or had?) a wife. It could go either way, since the power-grab after he dies in the epilogue (if the PC made him king) doesn't mean he had no heirs (he could have named a son or daughter, and the Assembly could have gone against it).

Surelyforth gave the best ever line for it - "Fiona ****ed King What's-his-stuff. Oh, and you're their son. Good luck with that."

Of course, her Alistair and Anders like each other SIGNIFICANTLY LESS than mine do.

Sad but true. It's one thing I've noticed with most fan based fiction writing I've done. The guys are in the minority.

I hope I haven't trolled this thread yet... (it's been some time since I first found it.) Of course, I'm more tolerant because I'm a fanfic nerd... (And of course I make 3+ posts on Eamon when I'm studying Biology. I wouldn't have made such a wall of text if I was thinking straight...)

PS: Don't be fooled by the (currently) female avatar. I have a Y chromosome, last I checked.
Posted Image

PPS: Why does the fanfic writer group always tend to be female? Do the males hide it when they do it? If I did statistics, I'd write a survey...

PPPS: (post-post-post script) If I'm writing females incorrectly, you now have an excuse to flame me. Me being a guy and all...

I'll take one. Though it's a bit early for me. But I'm sure beer is drunk somewhere for breakfast, right?

Maybe it's that most of Y chromosome sorts are more secretive and are less likely to join a thread like this?

Oh, and my co-authors and I got an awesome review for Persephone Rising and it was anonymous!  So, we're just thanking all the communities we post in in hopes of thanking that person.  S/he made our day yesterday.
