Fanfiction Sucks

Back to an earlier conversation about self-inserts. I was thinking about it and realised that every other time (before DA) I've been tempted to write fanfiction I've really been delving into fantasy land - my scenarios were all "this character who also happens to be a lot like me" is inserted into a world I love. The great thing about writing for a game is that you're given the PC like a gift - you can self insert if you want to. But I started writing fanfic for DA because I wanted to continue Alistair's story, not my PC's. So it wasn't quite as fantasy land as my (entirely in my head) Harry Potter/Blakes 7/Star Wars fanfic ideas were.

I have a secret idea to annotate the Twilight books with all the ways they are crap from every angle. Edward does something douchey? See footnote 35 for a brief explanation of exactly how douchey he is being and why you should not aspire to want that in a man. Bella trips over something? See appendix 2 for information on all the neurological disorders she might have. Edward and Bella are cuddling and the configuration of limbs makes no sense? Stick-figure diagram. I bet I could even get Stephen King to help me out.

I have a wonder...
I thought of this when the subject of naming characters after yourself came up.
Do any of you (or maybe all of you would be more accurate since I KNOW I can't be the only one) have problems with people assuming you are your characters, and your characters are making decisions you would support?
Is self-insert so common that everyone assumes that's the case or something?
I have had people making assumptions of me based on my canon PC (or that's what it has felt like), but no soaring accusations of hate that I am a horrible person. But then, my main Warden (or the one I've mostly written about) doesn't go out of her way to do cruel things, so maybe there's simply not as much to project on me as the author?
Or maybe it's the RPG issue that the writer must be The Warden, since they can't possibly be any of the established PCs. Ever got any hate for something Morrigan did, even though you wrote it?
People are funny.

Has any FF or mod ever actually make you feel sad? At least sad for the characters? I have a love/hate relationship with not being able to "cry" unless something really does get in my eye, but there are some games (note: official games) that made me depressed for a day or so. For example: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Pikmin 1, and some (rare) others... Also, has anyone had their own fic/mod reviewed where the reviewer said
thay felt sad, when you did intend them to be sad?
I cry pretty easily, I'm sorry to say. I have read several fics that have made me weep (got an update for one this morning actually...had to get tissues)., but that's not the same as being depressed.
I have had people review some of my stuff and say they felt sad/depressed on behalf of a character, so it is possible to intend this in your writing and achieve it in my experience.

Feel free to ignore me if I'm cutting off a good conversation, but I have a question about FF, and to a lesser extent mods.

I ask this because it's part of the whole "making the audience react how you want them to" thing. If I get my way, the Legend of Tayte might end with some mixed emotions... (Aptly termed by some as "Bittersweet.") I want to make sure this is possible so I can plan appropriately.
I did not cry but felt very disturbed and upset reading Lady DaModred's and Addai's Alistair execution shorts...
Then I thought, of the power to evoke such emotion, "This is great,", so I wrote my own version. Which upset me while I was writing it and has upset other people in turn... Misery spreads or is that catharsis?

It would be better if you preferred the books....
Self-inserts and Twilight.... Much to my shame, I admit to reading the first and second books for science. They took me a total of four days because there literally was no meat to the writing and the author had Bella unconscious for every single fight scene. And DIDN'T transfer to another character's head during the unconsciousness. And stalking is NOT romantic unless you're John Cusack and carrying a boombox over your head.
I've yet to be accused of self-inserts in any of my fics. They all have parts of me, but they are not me. (Avery Shepard may actually be the closest, but I'm still not as bad-ass as she is and I'm not as forgiving.)

Although I have seen some very well-done fanfics on this very topic. You would think people who have such a huge problem with the series would have something better to do with their time than write about it but I, for one, am glad that they clearly don't.Miri1984 wrote...

I especially like the stories where people realize how disturbing imprinting on an infant is (though I'm of the opinion he imprinted on the unfertilized egg).

That... really doesn't make it any less creepy. More, in fact.
Him imprinting earlier? Well, that's why the stories I read either don't have the imprint at all or else have it be completely non-romantic and the pair end up with different people. I'm not fond of forced relationships.

And I guess I should brave the storm and say: does anyone else think that there are some unromancable characters that should stay unromanced?
Sten: No. Err... Yes.

Back to my opinion, I wish certain characters could be "romancable," but I accept and understand why some aren't romance options.
I was going to give an example in my script-esque "dialogue," but I squicked myself.

Oghren. And more to the point, I don't
like stories where the dwarf Warden ends up with him because...well,
really just because they're both dwarves so he 'understands' her more
than anyone else possibly could. Plus I don't like the thought of him

Yeah,
the thought of unclothed Oghren is disturbing. He's a good guy for a
fight, or if you want to find a drink, but to be romantically
involved?

Dragon Age FanFiction: So like I said before I'm trying to get back into the swing of writing my dao fanfiction. My problem right now is trying to decide how in depth to get into describing dlc's. I was thinking I had a free six months or so (before awakenings events) to write my own adventure but since my aonghas is having trouble leaving and staying away from denerim, I realized yikes it's dlc time. Heh. It's odd because I started out having about 10 months of free rein and then I kept getting dragged back to denerim and now the time crunch becomes more significant. I almost feel like the dlc's are controlling the next chapter, I'm not saying it's a bad thing but it feels odd. Anybody else writing fan fic for the time between archdemon defeat and awakenings? If so how are you dealing with the dlc's?L2A
I've actually incorporated Stone Prisoner into the Blight, I plan to eventually include Warrior's Peak and R:tO as well. Golems and WH take place after Awakenings. And truth be told I'm not sure if I'm even going to include Golems because the execution was poorly done, or I might just totally re-write it the way I'm planning to with WH.

I haven't played through either yet, but from what I understood either can be played before or after awakenings. Did anybody see a post in the forums about when they are suppose to take place? (lore wise that is) Has anybody played them before and after awakenings (or seen a post about somebody who has)? If so does the way you are refered to changed? Warden vs. Warden Commander? hmmm hey I'll just try it myself and see at least the intro to golems anyways.
