I admit guilt to that as well. But mainly because I don't believe I'm skilled enough in writing to offer criticism that's valid/useful. I tend to be more of a sidelines cheering section.

On the other hand, when receiving reviews its nice to get a good bit of concrit now and again. As nice as all the "wow this is good, update please" reviews are, it's great when you get one going in-depth and praising the good stuff, but being honest and concise about things that could be improved on. Personally, that encourages me to try and improve my writing more.

This so hard.  I have one person that /always/ leaves me super honest reviews and I love her to death for it.  I know she is going to be brutally honest with me and she makes me a way better writer for it.

Hey we all can use the cheering section, so thank you bob-san!

LadyD, thanks for the link! I will read your stories with relish! :D

Weryr, be not afraid!

And yeah, if I give constructive advice, not criticism. Advice can be taken or ignored. And I always end on a positive note. But I do leave a lot of Great job, want more reviews, because most of what I read from you all is just fantastic. I know we all tend to ****** on our own works, I do. But really if I didn't like it I just wouldn't review. I also like to muse in reviews and see if I was right later.

I too have a beta reader who will be brutally nonest with me.  He is a beta reader and a fan.  He had given me the ol' WTF back of the head slap (gently of course)  that helps tremendously.  I love him more for it.  <3

Funnily enough, I've never had a beta reader. Most likely because I'm horribly erratic - I can churn out 10k+ in one mad flurry of inspiration and then lose all interest in the plot until months later. I think I'd drive one up the wall!

I also find it strange how popularity in certain fics differ. My most popular one on ff.net is a story that I was never THAT connected to - I'd even go as far as to say I was writing it for the readers rather than myself. I still enjoyed writing it, but it's not something I'd necassrily think of that was as good in style as other things I've written.

Ah yes, the stats page on ffnet is wonderful for pointing out these oddities.   I've had lots of 'huh' moments because of it.  Really, I think it has to do with subject matter.  Folks are going to be more interested in reading a story about Alistair than say Loghain or Zevran instead of Sten.

I also find it odd which chapters seem to have more readers.  Sometimes it makes sense, other times...not so much.

Agreed!

I've been stung by what was supposed to be constructive criticism.I was a member of a forum (not on BSN) and I entered a writing competition. As part of the lure of doing it, cc was also to be offered to anyone who wanted it. I was curious to see what they would say. It was not constructive (unluckily my PC died a few months later taking all my e-mails so I no longer have it) but it put me off writing for months. I felt I everything I was writing was crap or I assumed it would be so it gave me writers block big time. I'm all for constructive crit - if it is that. If its thinly veiled b*tchiness, forget it.

*pat-pats*  Yeah, when people are just out to tear you down, it can hurt, especially when you're writing for enjoyment.  I tend to give fanfic writers a lot more slack than I do published authors.  *coughstephaniemeyerscough*  If I'm enjoying a story, I'm okay with it being a little rough.  And people have different writing styles, which can also influence enjoyment, but it's hard to ask someone to change how they write just because it's not to your taste.

This makes me a poor candidate for a beta-reader b/c I am probably more forgiving in that regard, and that's not what people are looking for.  My strengths lie in pure copy editing and characterization.  I'll admit that I probably desperately need a beta-reader since I have trouble looking at my stuff objectively.  But since I am relatively new to this whole fanfic thing, I have no idea how to go about finding one.  *casts about hopefully*

@ Mirelia, I think I understand what you mean, I certainly don't consider what you said thinly veiled b*tchiness like you said. Writing's always hard, I used to have some rather mean experiences of it. When I write, I'm always eager to know what people think, and I certainly don't consider your writing to be crappy, it's brilliant! But yes, like you said, it helps to have a beta reader, or an editor if you like.

If you want me to read for you, I will LadyD. I read for Tanith if you want to ask her about how I do in that regard. And I read for Violet Theirin on FF. I don't tear people down. That does nothing but give them writers block and it sucks their soul out. I will give suggestions and advice which you may take or not. But if you want me as a sounding board,I would love to. I like your writing. :)

I am trying to get over a bout of writers block, and the self doubt demon, and the fear of putting my fingers to the keyboard cuz everything I do will be crap. I can't possibly juggle all my characters, or I am not writing them correctly. *sigh* All that garbage I now carry from a review I got from someone recently on FF. I mean I don't want smoke blown up my backside, but when it is just destructive criticism, it takes some getting over.:pinched:

The whole canon thing can be funny when you're dealing with fanfiction. Really how much you get away with in terms of characters and lore staying in line with the game depends on the readers. Some will like a different view or twist on things, some won't *care*, you'll get those who don't necessarily agree but will keep with it anyway if they like the story itself, and then you'll get the 'rabid elitists' who will hate on anything that deters from 'how it was in the game'. ;)

I tend to fall into the second last category where reading is concerned, but when *writing* I try to stay as close to game canon as possible. I even get paranoid when writing from Zev's point of view because I'm slightly terrified of screwing up his character and getting lynched. XD

Yep, it takes a while, Gil.  The criticism stings and then burns the more you dwell on it.  So, take your time, cry it out.  Let that mascara run…then, use the left-over smudge to Eye Black your eyes.  Make one line and then two, roll-up your sleeves and take a deep breath.  Then say:  Bring it on, ****es.

Get ready to fight ‘cause you can’t let them bring you down or break you.

Edited note:  oh, that's so cool the program censored my bits...

download toolset and read not only the actual conversations but the voice actor notes, helps a tonne. I use it all the time now, it's really good for trying to work out NPCs.

Oh thanks soignee! And I too have some long chapters 7k and 8k. I don't do it too often but some chapters are what they are. And I am really glad to hear some say they try to do just 2k, I always wonder if my 2 or 3k is too short. Sounds like it isn't, so that makes me feel better too.

Shadow you do a fantastic job on your Zev, I loves him so.

And thanks Ette! *HUGS*

LadyD glad to. If you want you can send it to me here, or FF, or my personal email if you would rather sweetie.
