You know, I never panicked until about two days ago because I've been reading "Mark Reads Twilight" and every criticism he has of Stephanie Meyer I am now terrified that I do too. Mary Sueism? Unconscious reinforcement of gender stereotypes? Repetition of words? REALLY OBVIOUS foreshadowing??

*nail biting*

BUT then I remind myself that I'm writing fanfiction and it's for MY enjoyment, not for other peoples. The fact that other people ARE enjoying it is just like the icing on the cake.

On another note: after a week of writing like I've been possessed by something I wrote ONE PARAGRAPH yesterday. Hellooo burn out :(.

For what it's worth, I don't think you're guilty of any of those things.

(also, I hate my new keyboard. My kingdom for a ps2 to usb adapter)

I did the same thing when I started reading MRT! But you should stop fretting. Anyone who can recognize that Meyer's writing is crap is pretty much guaranteed to be better than her (in theory). Then there's the fact that, like Lupus said, I've never noticed anything like that in your writing.

Thanks Lupus - it's good to hear. I actually don't think I am either, but it's a bit crippling, because I'm second guessing all my character's motives and hoping like hell I've been consistent across the whole fic - I think it's part of the reason I can't get writing at the moment - aside from the lack of sleep thing which is weird. Sometimes it makes me write MORE, but at the moment it's flooding me with ennui.

And it's a shame you don't live on the same continent as I do. My husband and I have multiples of EVERY SINGLE TYPE OF CABLE THAT EXISTS because we're device obsessed and disorganised. He went through the cable drawer about six months ago and organised them all. It's INSANE.

Edited to add: Thanks Surely and Sarah as well :)

@Miri. OMG. "MRT" is fantastic - the first one I clicked on he was TOTALLY ragging on fanfiction. As a FF writer it was fantastic to read his thoughts on it....and now I am starting at the very beginning and am so excited to read about how he tears SM apart. This stuff is like crack...thanks for my (newest) addiction!! :)

Ha! I am happy to spread the gospel! He rocks. I found him through Riathepinkie and SurelyForth and I've read all of both blogs now, it took me - what? A week? I just love how well he articulates my rage about Twilight.

And he's actually asked the HP blog commenters to recommend some fanfiction for him - HP fanfiction (of which I have read none, except for that incredibly disturbing Dobby story about the socks) so there's a chance that he could be persuaded that fanfiction isn't all bad. He does acknowledge that it's a good outlet for people who want to practice their writing skills, and he doesn't trash on people who write it. Mind you he originally didn't trash on people who read Twilight without rage. THAT changed :).

This probably sounds silly, but am I the only one who keeps thesaurus.com up while writing? I find it helps keep me from reusing the same words.

I don't have a thesaurus up but I do always have the DA wiki and toolset up while I'm writing in case I need to check something...which I always do.

That's a relief. There's times I'm poking my brain for an alternative that I know is lurking there, but won't come out.

Yeah, I have the DA wiki up, and since I'm still learning the toolset, I use one of my numerous saves.

Same here.  I've become so dependant on the toolset, I'd be lost without it.

I use YouTube for the same thing - except that there are a couple of conversations that no one has loaded so I have to look them up. I find YouTube more useful than the written transcripts of the dialogue because you get tone of voice as well - and I know the toolset has tone written in but I still find it better to actually hear the voices. Especially Oghren and Zevran.

You can hear the tones in the toolset, Miri. :) There's a 'play' function in there that both gives you the audio and shows the basic animation of each particular line.

As well as the notes for the voice actors.

IE: in the fade where zevran says the line about "nothing like a good racking" the notes say "Chuckling, covering the fact that he was just tortured and is still in pain." I never really caught that in the line, but seeing it in the notes it really changes how I see the scene.

It's why I use thesaurus.com/ the other nice thing is that it'll give different usage suggestions as well.

Toolset for me as well - the voice over notes are really really helpful, as is being able to check multiple conversation trees at once.

I know the thesaurus for Office 2003/2007 isn't great, but the one in 2010 seems to be a heck of a lot better, and also gives you options to look up words through various internet dictionaries.  I find a use it a lot more now than when I had 2003 only.  Realy, Office 2010 is in almost every way a huge improvement on 2003, and I hated 2007.

Leo the Deutsch-Englisches Sprache Worterbuch; I find it so cool that you write your FF in two languages, are there a lot of readers for the German version? One day perhaps I'll put my stuff in Spanish...

Definitely Youtube for Awakening conversations or sometimes for scenes that the toolset can't do justice to (the Zathrian/Lady confrontation, ro instance).

Not really. And neither for the English version. But never mind... I write it anyway, because at least I want to know how my story will go on. :D

Why not? Translation is an interesting experience for me. It changes the story, it even changes the original, because you read your own story very attentively when you translate it. And besides - I'm improving my English that way (I hope so...). ;)

Ach, I might give it a try one day, I did German up to Mittelstufe 1, it will be interesting to read DA FF in German/English...

OMG!  MelRedux rocks!  Check this out!

Posted Image

This is Erna, who is a Duster and the older sister to a warden recruit my "Choices" Warden (F!Cousland) recruits.  She's a chatty, inquisitive sort, and I think Mel got her personality really well!

I put a copy of this in my fanfic thread, but Mel did such a great job I wanted to share it with everyone.  Thanks again Mel!  <3<3<3<3
