Ffnet down for anyone else?

Yep. You know, it actually seems like it's been awhile since the last time we've had problems with it. I'm sure it wasn't all that long ago but it seems like it.

Yep, FF.net is down for me also.

Didn't it go down a couple of weeks ago?

It went down after I had just updated something which narrows it down to roughly...pretty much every day. Posted Image

According to this thread it was eleven days ago it last went down.

I guess this thread's pretty useful for keeping track of things like that. Was that the weird thing where it went down for different people at different times?

Edit: I remember the good old days where eleven days without a breakdown wasn't a freaking accomplishment but rather the norm.

Down for "upgrades," huh? I guess I have time to finish my school work and "upgrade" my story.

Hi all. Here is what I'm thinking about tonight. Gamer literacy. Like being able to pick up any RPG and play it easier than someone who only plays shooters, guessing what dialogue choices will get what etc. But also, concepts and words and how that meets fanfic. I just realised that I was writing something creatively assuming that my character had infinite carrying capacity, like a bag of holding. That may be consistent with DA - like you can carry 80 weapons if you like, but not with, like fiction. Are there any times when the game influences your writing and you don't realise?

Also, how about that David Gaider podcast? I thought what he said about fan fiction was hilarious. Shame he's not into reading it (but understandable) but it's interesting how he said fan fiction makes him reflect about how his characters have come across.

I am sure there are times when the game influences my writing and I don't realise it... But I don't realise it... [Just joking]

I actually think this is a jolly good question. I guess sometimes I may be alerted to it by my SO who reads my FF but has never played DA...

Ah, game mechanics/limitations and writing. I find myself not wanting to give non-rogue characters the ability to sing just because warriors and mages can't be 'Bards'. ;) Which is silly, of course.

I haven't listened to the podcast...yes, a shame Gaider doesn't read fanfics. I think some of the other DA:O writers were keeping an interested eye on them a while back, but nothing more than that, alas.

And only rogue characters wear leather armour, Zev never wears anything but and certainly not plate...

I have a tendency to ignore game mechanics, or try to bend them to something that makes sense in a storywriting capacity.

I have for example put Missa in plate, but only for the lulz. My Rangers are just "good with animals" rather then having a magical ability and my mages get tired after spellwork.

I can understand it when Gaider says he doesn't read FF because "They're touching my characters... or playing in my sandbox..." ie, he's protective, but he does not close the door entirely. It seems pretty obvious to me that if not him directly some of his co-writers seem to read...

Yeah, I'm mostly "only mages get magic, kthx".  (Seriously, how can you work scattershot without magic?)  So Leliana can sing really well, but that's just good for whiling away the winter evenings when it gets dark too early to keep traveling but the party's not ready to go to bed yet.

One of my stories recently (I don't remember which) involved a mage either picking a lock or planning to do it soon and it felt a little weird since mages can't do that but I went ahead and put that in anyway because there really isn't anything besides game mechanics preventing them from learning.

There are horses in the novels. In game there isn't an equine to be found in all of Ferelden. I try to stick with what is logical and not necessarily be bound by what is (or is not) in game.

Yeah, I've never been sure what to do about the horses.  I figure Fereldan is prone to equine encephalitis outbreaks so horses are very expensive.  Posted Image  Sometimes in my fanfic they have horses, other times not.  For most of the early part of the story they're traveling in the boonies where I don't think horses would be easily found (unless they go around stealing farmers' cart horses), and then when they do get to a place that would sell them they don't have enough money.  With the party's lifestyle there's also the problem of attrition--horse ran off during darkspawn attack, poisoned by darkspawn blood, broke a leg in a groundhog hole, etc.

I'm with you there on the horses issue, there are also plenty of weeds growing in Ferelden noxious to equines, so...

or the ones in england ferelden are too small to ride, like New Forest/Shetland ponies that are native here can only be ridden by kids etc.

That gives me an idea. What if the only good Ferelden cavalry were Dalish riders? That has possibilities...

I have horses in my fic since they're in the books and riding is mentioned during the game . It makes sense that the Warden wouldn't have them during the Blight, what with the size of your crew and the difficulty in just keeping them fed, armed and armored.

And even if Gaider comes down and says that all horses in Ferelden were killed during the Blight, I'm keeping them. The idea of Sigrun and her little mount, Horsemeat, is just too awesome for me to give up.

I'm giving my party horses for the last bit. Once you're up to the Landsmeet you've got the Arl on your side, and I'm sure he has horses if anyone does.
