The whole canon thing can be funny when you're dealing with fanfiction. Really how much you get away with in terms of characters and lore staying in line with the game depends on the readers. Some will like a different view or twist on things, some won't *care*, you'll get those who don't necessarily agree but will keep with it anyway if they like the story itself, and then you'll get the 'rabid elitists' who will hate on anything that deters from 'how it was in the game'.
I tend to fall into the second last category where reading is concerned, but when *writing* I try to stay as close to game canon as possible. I even get paranoid when writing from Zev's point of view because I'm slightly terrified of screwing up his character and getting lynched. XD
download toolset and read not only the actual conversations but the voice actor notes, helps a tonne. I use it all the time now, it's really good for trying to work out NPCs.
Oh my god, yes. There are some lines that don't quite get delivered the way the vo directiosn say to, so it's incredibly helpful for eliminating any uncertainty.
