The whole canon thing can be funny when you're dealing with fanfiction. Really how much you get away with in terms of characters and lore staying in line with the game depends on the readers. Some will like a different view or twist on things, some won't *care*, you'll get those who don't necessarily agree but will keep with it anyway if they like the story itself, and then you'll get the 'rabid elitists' who will hate on anything that deters from 'how it was in the game'. ;)

I tend to fall into the second last category where reading is concerned, but when *writing* I try to stay as close to game canon as possible. I even get paranoid when writing from Zev's point of view because I'm slightly terrified of screwing up his character and getting lynched. XD

download toolset and read not only the actual conversations but the voice actor notes, helps a tonne. I use it all the time now, it's really good for trying to work out NPCs.

Oh my god, yes.  There are some lines that don't quite get delivered the way the vo directiosn say to, so it's incredibly helpful for eliminating any uncertainty.

I will have to download the toolset. I wanted to play around and make more hairstyles. I know, how shallow. : D

I tend to fall in the second category as well except with certain things.  I have to admit, I'm one of the Zevran folks that gets turned off when I see him OOC.  He's such a complex character and it makes me sad when I see people not take advantage of all he offers to an author.

That being said, I also get TERRIBLY paranoid writing him because of my own viewpoints.  And anything with Loghain?  It's even worse.

I am not even going to touch Loghain unless I have to.

Oh Tasmen, I hope my Zev is to your liking. I try to do justice to him. I really hate when people portray him one dimensionally.

Oh I /love/ writing him.  I just get so paranoid when doing it.  Thankfully, I have another ffnet author who writes Loghain to chat with about Loghain things.   She usually confirms what I'm thinking but still.. I just want to make sure I do Mr. Broody Pants justice.

YAY! Loghain scares me. ROFL.

So do you all find yourselves writing in story arcs? Or by chapter, or do you get an idea and keep it, or do you write a chapter around the idea to use later? Or do you bounce around? What do you do when you get an idea and you are out and about somewhere? And do you have a spot or an activity where you seem to get your best ideas?

LOL just curious. : D

I had a story arc for Losses and Consequences (and Beginnings, obviously) but with Obscure Heroes it's more about each episode in Alistair's life.

I seem to get all my ideas when I'm trying to get to sleep at night, or when I'm trying to get the little one to sleep. There's nothing like sitting in a darkened room in silence for getting the imagination flowing.

I've got a general idea for a story when I start it.  I know what the characters will be like and where we'll be at the end of the story.  I've written chapter by chapter in the past.  Recently, however, I've found myself writing bits and pieces for future chapters when the inspiration hits.

I bring a thumb drive with me to work that has all my doc files on it so that I can edit/add to files when I'm at work.

Some of my best ideas come to me when I'm driving or when I'm on IRC talking to the swoopers from livejournal.

Neat! I want a lap top really badly. That way I could type a chapter anywhere, well except while driving of course. I tend to write chapter by chapter but within in a arc that all threads together with my story. Of course that may change when I do the noble origin one. :)

LOL, my noble origin story was going to be my first FF to get my feet wet. To get into practice before I started "Soulmates." But my epic arcing tale kicked me in the shins, grabbed me by the hair and said WRITE ME NOW! I am afraid I had to comply.  I have the start to my first chapter for "The First Cut is Always the Deepest," sitting in Open Office languishing. Have any of you had a story you were working on and then had to put it off because another just yelled and screamed to be written first?:pinched:

I have a general idea of where I want a story to go.  Sometimes I have a really concrete beginning or ending, but there's usually some fluidity.  Sometimes whole storylines have to be scrapped because they just don't work when you try to flesh them out.

As for writing, I write in sections when an idea comes to me.  Something it starts out as merely a really good sentence that I can build off of, or an image of something happening.  If I'm lucky, the story or section writes itself.  I love those days.  As for what helps me, I like going for walks while listening to music.  I key up something to put me in the mood for what I want to think about and just walk.  The good part of that is that I can talk to myself to help act out scenes and get tone right, and no one thinks I;m crazy b/c I have my headphones in and they think I'm singing.  XD

Oh LadyD a writer after my own heart! I too listen to my IPod, thanks to hubby for Christmas, and walk. And I act scenes by talking as though I am the characters! Glad I am not the only one. X D

Oh, you most certainly are not.  >.>  I do it all the time.  And I don't always get the chance to talk outloud.  A great deal of Second Chance was done in my head during recess duties.  :x

Oh, LadyD, just read your chapter 2, it is fantastic! Gave some small things, but you keep walking and listening to music. As far as I am concerned Chapter 2 is even better than Chapter 1.

You know, I'm connected to irc 24/7.  I should probably hang out in that irc channel.

Ya know... I don't like that word. If you must, say "In terms of merit, fan fiction is abysmal."

You clearly haven't been in the irc channels I've spent the last 6 years in.  What are the server/chan names?  For some reason, I can't find them on the site.

There's actually quite a few LJ communities for DA.  If you check out the info for Swooping_is_bad, there should be a list of all the different communities if you want to watch/lurk.  I say this because I am selfish as I mod the Nathaniel Howe and dragonage_fic comms. :innocent:
