See, the fandoms I spent the most time in prior to DA were Harry Potter and Naruto. Those are both ridiculously big fandoms. Example: The Naruto one-shot I have the least reviews for is 18. The DA one-shot I have the MOST reviews for is 26 and the second-most is also 18. It's really a testament to how much I love the game (even if I can't remember the last time I played it Posted Image) that I've been writing for it since February.

I'm wondering, do any of you lords and ladies know of DA fanfictions that actually explore other types of relationships besides romance? You know, rivalry, family, 'blood brothers', that sort of thing? And I mean in detail, not just hints.

30 Dragon might have some of what you're looking for. Here's the summary from FF.net: Alistair isn't the only illegitimate son of King Maric. Where Eamon failed, the Couslands did not, and raised Maric's other son as their own.

So, I finished chapter 24 and ended up having just 8, and then seven people participate in the discussion around the campfire. The rest just had no business talking about Grey Warden matters so they were told to run off, or had done it on their own by then.

BTW there is one thing I'm relative uncreative right now and this concerns the travel food. What does one eat down there in the Deep Roads, except for beefy sticks? Anyone knows/ ideas? Bleargh.

Dried fruit, hardtack (essentially trail bread/hard biscuits), salted meat, grains (oats and rice - can be boiled/steamed easily), some hard cheeses can keep for a while, as can some root vegetables like potatos, bacon also travels well. Storing food in well-sealed oilcloth is wise, since if any of it gets wet it will rot or start growing.

Thank you so much. That is exactly what I have been looking for. I'm too dependent on the refrigerator and the cans in modern days to still know such stuff. Yeah, I'm sad xD

Hehe, no worries. I confess I don't think about necessities in an awful lot of detail, unless there's reason for it to be an issue. One of my favourite fantasy authors, David Eddings, *did* go into this in some of his books because one of the characters loved to cook. You'd get info on what food they were carrying, and characters would comment on any fresh food or meat they managed to acquire because, after days of dried or unexciting food, the idea of ROAST CHICKEN is just mouth-wateringly amazing. I remember a scene where one of the characters (a literal princess) was proud at finding a henhouse in the abandoned farm the group had decided to rest at, but didn't know how to collect their eggs because the hens 'were sitting on them and wouldn't let her'.

Ok, once my current story gets into travel mode, I really need to play with something like this...

Reading that makes me feel sympathy for my wardens, although they are very lucky that one of them is a Dalish hunter that always seems to procure rabbits, deers or some other type of wild game.:D, while the city elf actually DOES know cooking and has already made everyone be more than grateful for not having to rely on Alistair to make their meals.

@Shadow of light dragon: Yeah I didn't plan to go too much in detail with the food, but when they rest down there, they naturally eat something. And I think it's a nice little detail to name it, others than just "food" at times ;) So your help is very much appreciated.

BTW. I finally found the time to read your story "The hunt" (yeah, 100k stories scare me mostly so I always procrastinate to read those, even if my own story is as long as those *hides*)

Nevertheless you got me hooked. I'm currently on chapter 27 and will read the rest in the next days ( slow reader here, meh) I love your Zev and it's indeed a creative spin of the "redeemer" ending. Looking forward to the rest and the sequel *off to read*

Yeah, I'm always that creative in giving feedback *cough*

Oh God, I never have time to read anything it seems. With all the prompts going on in various threads, I can see how talented some of the people there are and I REALLY want to read their stories but I lack the time to do so. Fortunately, I'm nearly positive that I can finish my main DA story (which literally takes up two days a week) by the end of the year and then I can get started on everything.

Yeah I know that feeling and I even don't write on anything other than my story, actually. But behemoth seized story is behemoth seized and such a timesink, so yeah. I'm actually glad that I can manage to get some time off from writing from time to time to read a few stories myself. My stash of "want to read" is still painfully piled up, however. Sigh.

@Raonar - Hah, hooray for the Dalish who know how to hunt (unless their name is Cammen)! XD My HNF had a *little* hunting experience (I RP that Bryce took her on a few trips in the forest around Highever), but during the Blight it was mainly Shapeshifter Morrigan who caught game if the going was lean. As for cooking...yeah..I can only say she *tried* to learn. ;)

@Merilsell - Glad you're enjoying it. ^_^ And big stories scare me too, so you're not alone!

&

@Sarah - I also know the feeling. I don't have a lot of read fan fiction under my belt due to time constraints. Most of my free time is more spent writing than reading, and even then I can't answer all the Zev prompts. I intended to start reading a lot more once The Hunt was finished and then...er...started writing the sequel. >.>

I don't have much time to read stuff for the writing, which is ironic when you think about it but I recently tackled two chaps of Dead Duster Walking for the background and the entertainment and found them very amusing helpful. I also read Futile's brutal vignettes. And they rocked...:) [Corrected. Please don't shoot me for the erroneous attribution...]

Finally food just did some food commentary this chapter. Isabela serves Spanish like food and one of my Dalish characters makes a tasty broth or consomme from healing herbs....

I have two other stories ongoing at the moment too and some I need to get back to and complete so I better get on with it...

While time is always a huge issue, one of my own fears about reading other people's stories while my own is on-going is the fear of idea poaching. While no one can copyright an idea, it would be highly embarrassing to receive a message from another author about surprising "similarities" between stories. Its sort of a similar situation to why authors and devs can't legally read the fanfiction. I would get reviews from individuals with really epic tales, and I wouldn't be able to read them just so I could keep my thoughts and ideas pure. Thankfully, I'm far enough along now where I feel more comfortable reading and offering support, I just hate to come off as a selfish person because I'm writing rather than participating in the community.

Ditto.  Especially when writing a story (AU though it is) on the Blight timeline, it really cuts down on the stories I can read as I really don't want to "borrow" another author's idea unwittingly - I know there are a bunch of interesting Blight stories with fascinating twists....but thankfully for me there are plenty of post-blight stories as well!

I'm running into the same problem you are - Sometime I get a review from somebody that is really great and makes me feel oh-so-super!, and I want to see what they've written...and then I've seen that they've written or are writing a Blight story...and I have to weigh whether or not to read it...On one hand the threat of "idea poaching" on the other hand, the desire to give back.  Thankfully, similarly to your situation, I am far enough in my own story that I can at least read their first few chapters.  :)

It really is amazing how supportive the DA FF community is, when it comes to reading and reviewing each others works.  It seriously is a community out there....just wish I had more time between writing and school to read more of the great stuff out there!  (like yours - it's definitely on my list of stories to read...most likely during winter break^_^ )

Yes...unintentional idea poaching is another thing I worry about. It's kinda silly considering we're writing fan fiction, but it's one of those things that affects some writers, I guess. It sounds awfully elitist to say "I don't read (much of) other peoples' work in order to avoid creative contamination", doesn't it? :P

I read everything and anything - although I'm following so many fics at the moment that I've tried to slow down a bit. I'm going to wait before I invest in another big fic until one or two of the ones that I'm reading wrap up. I have reason to believe that at least two of them will soon. I think.

I am slightly worried about inadvertently stealing ideas, but I like to think that I'd recognise it before I did it, and I hope if someone reads my stuff and thinks that I have they would tell me. I do think that even if ideas are similar they are dealt with differently.

Bahaha.  Yes, it most definitely does.  :D

If I am to be honest with myself, I think another reason I try to avoid reading most other Blight stories is I like to think mine is unique, and it'd be such a downer to realize that I'm not that awesomely creative to have included some of the things I have.  Hmmm....I think that makes me sound even worse, but there you go.  To make up for this self-absorption I'll promise to read a couple of Blight stories...once my own is finished.  :innocent:

Real-life example of this for me - I have a companion story to my Blight one, and it concerns a Cousland that was captured by Howe.  I had read a little bit about your story "Caged" a month or so ago...so I didn't know if I would have come up with my idea for my Cousland on my own or not...but I put on my first chapter a reference to your story, just in case, and told myself not to read any more of your story so I can develop Devona on my own.  Someday I'll get around to reading it though, cause it did sound really interesting.  :)

See, the fact I have an epic-length Aeducan fanfic w/out an Alistair romance ALREADY makes my story unique on a few fronts which is nice because really I started this story because I couldn't find a decent-sized Aeducan story that didn't have an Alistair romance. And you know what they say: if you want to read something, you might as well write it yourself. Posted ImagePosted Image
And I noticed that about the stats...right AFTER I posted a new one-shot. No reviews yet so for all I know no one's actually read it. Posted Image

That's why I started mine. There were no other Anders fics at the time. Someone beat me to publishing by a couple days so clearly I wasn't alone in thinking he was too awesome not to have at least one story.

Yup, I found yours Lupus after I started writing my one-shots. I didn't really get into writing Anders until after that - he's addictive. And I'm always a bit worried that I take a bit from you when I'm writing Fractures - Neria isn't as... feisty? as Maggie and the relationships are different but when we did the Fiona reveal in the same week I was biting my nails a bit.

Fractures is nearly finished in any case, but there's no way I'm giving up reading AOA, I love it too much.

So someone just sent me a message saying this fanfic author I know told them I'd like the story and, sure enough, in the review it says "You should show this to Sarah1281." I'm kind of curious about the story now.

ROFL, there is some truth in that for me as well, I think. I remember halfway through The Hunt I did some light trawling of FF.Net to see what some DA:O fics were like, and came across one that mentioned halla milk. Now, I had done a chapter recently where the characters were with some Dalish and halla milk was involved, not in any earth-shaking plot sense, just as some (oddly enough, considering our recent thread discussions) food detail! I remember thinking to myself 'I am a creative genius! ^_^' when I came up with the idea, so when I saw halla milk in another fic, the first thing I thought was 'Nooo, I am not a unique snowflake! ;-;' and the *second* was 'When was this chapter published? Did mine come first??' XD

I felt like *such* a child...

I was really grateful to see that other people's fanfic had food mentioned on and off as issues for the Wardens in their stories. At first I thought it was something I was exaggerating in my head.

And I do still read other people's fanfics even as I write mine, but Marlana is so firmly entrenched in my brain, I know she'll start going stabbity if I confuse her with someone else. ;)

Also the reason why I started mine.

At the time where I started it (January), there where no decent Dalish stories to find, which actually treat the Dalish Warden...well Dalish. (Except for "Understanding" perhaps) I always had the feeling when reading a few of the Mahariel stories available there, to read about Warden XY but not specially about a Warden with a different culture and belief. Most of them acted like they know the world outside their clan borders from the get-go and aren't foreign to anything. Big immersion breaker for me.  Also the fact that those Dalish Wardens were best friends to everyone upon meeting irritated me a lot. <_<

This is not restricted to Dalish Wardens however, I'm absolutely not a fan of 'in your face'- relationships. No matter if romance or friendship. But with a Dalish who hasn't socialized much (or at all) with people outside the clan and least of all *gasp* humans, this appears even more...odd.

This has changed by now, however. There are nice stories out there, which handle this origin faithfully and believable. Few but devoted. And it's nice to receive reviews, where reader are commenting that mine is one of them :) Also I needed to get my nagging, stabbity elf out of my head.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who keeps getting her imagination prodded. But now I have two other characters that are prodding with their stories also. Argh.

Oh well, just shows how good this game is if it keeps inspiring me to write. I haven't had something like that in a few years.
