Yup, I found yours Lupus after I started writing my one-shots. I didn't really get into writing Anders until after that - he's addictive. And I'm always a bit worried that I take a bit from you when I'm writing Fractures - Neria isn't as... feisty? as Maggie and the relationships are different but when we did the Fiona reveal in the same week I was biting my nails a bit.

Fractures is nearly finished in any case, but there's no way I'm giving up reading AOA, I love it too much.

I thought that was a riot that we dd that at the same time.  I'd already had most of my next few chapters outlined out when you did your reveal.  I know we both plan everything pretty far in advance so it was just some kind of crazy Anders-driven moment of synchronicity.

I think it's interesting how different our characters and stories are given that we're both working with the same basic building blocks.  Neria is far more logical and rational than Maggie.  Your game characters come across very differently, too, but never out of character.  I suppose it's just that different aspects of their personalities are accentuated.

(Also, New Vegas... I almost always do my first play of any RPG as a total goody-two-shoes but I think I'm going to have to side with the Legion. I took four years of Latin and still have a minor obsession with ancient Roman culture.  The simple fact that they pronounce things correctly is enough to win me over.  Despite their other, far more horrid, qualities.  Also, my current quest- to find someone named Anders who went missing.  No kidding.  If he's got a blonde ponytail and an earring I think my head will seriously explode.)

I find that odd, too.
What really surprises me is how few stories deal with weather.  Maybe it's because I live in a cold climate, but there are a good several months where sleeping in a tent in my area would be fatal.  The mortality rate among the homeless here from about November through March is really horrifying.  Hell, there's usually at least one or two people in my city every winter who die in their homes because their power was turned off for one reason or another.  If Ferelden is even half as cold as everyone seems to think it is camping out probably wouldn't be feasible even with all the ice salve in the world.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who keeps getting her imagination prodded. But now I have two other characters that are prodding with their stories also. Argh.

Heh, tell me about it. It was an odd experience. I planned it to write my story originally as a drabble series, hence much shorter. Upon opening a new site to begin writing said drabbles, my Dalish started some weird convo with me in my head. :D

Lenya: *sigh* You want to write my story that short?
Me: Err...yes. Drabble series. Lenya/Alistair focused. Drabbles are short, you know?
Lenya: No. I don't like this human ...or any other human, for that matter *tabs impatiently her feet* Write it in another way. I demand it.
Me: You...WHAT? You know that I've created you, don't you?
Lenya: *smiles innocently*  Yes, and now live with it. So I want my whole story written down.
Me: *eyes widened* Your WHOLE story? So one of this blight- playthrough behemoth FF's? I don't have time for that, you know?
Lenya: I don't care. If you pair me up with that oaf of a human, then I want it decently explained and handled at least. Like my Dalish background.
Me. *whimpers* But I really don't have time to write a 100k monster...:crying:
Lenya: *rolls eyes* Whatever. Now go on WRITE IT!
Me: But...
Lenya: Or I start singing in your head and won't stop it. Ever.
Me: You totally are ignoring me, right?
Lenya: LALALALALALALALALA *sings horribly off tune*
Me: *argh* STOP!....FINE, I'll do it. *grumbles*
Lenya: Ma serranas. *grins smugly*

Now several months later: *Look at my 135k WIP story and sigh* ...The things I do for a little peace in my mind...

I try to address the weather in parts of my story, because while I live in FL where you can sleep outside year round for the most part, I originally come from NY where there were similar stories that you've heard. Part of my problem has been trying to track the months in game and if I'm timing things right for the various seasons. There were reasons why Marlana wasn't going to have her little group troop around the Brecilian forest in the middle of winter.

Not that Orzammar was all that better, but I ended up making the trip in the Deep Roads longer than intended, it just worked out that way because my subconscious decided to make it even more grueling than in game. What can I say, I'm just evil to my character.s

@Meri - You know, that's kind of what Marlana has been doing. Usually it'd be a background thought of "I so would not say that! And you know it!"

Next thing I know I'm writing fanfic to fit things the way I had them in my head. I honestly never expected to hit the 56k word mark, and I'm still going, so I guess I might end up close to 70k. I'll be surprised if it's more than that.

Probably going to regret saying that. :)

But now I have Kaylith my feisty CE rogue who wants her story written (even though I haven't played through and my planned playthrough is nothing like the story she's insisting on) and Sheyoni my mage who got cooked up from testing some mods and wants me to write her story as a non-warden redeeming drunken Alistair.

Yes, I have a warped imagination, it's fun though.

I am in an even more awkward situation. I am at over 240,000 words and have only done the origin and Ostagar parts, plus a bit of Redcliffe and now doing the Circle Tower.

It will take a long, long time to finish. I started writing this tale in mid-June and now... sigh.

But the upside is that I AM REVELING IN IT, and most of my few reviewers keep saying that my tale is either underreviewed or underrated (FF.net has a ranking system? I honestly haven't seen one).

Plus I am just good at writing manipulative geniuses it seems :D (cue bashing of the self-important, totally not modest one).

Heh, if that soothes you in any way, Raonar, I'm in with 135k words, haven't even finished the FIRST treaty (but many many side stories and Honnleath because I so adore Shale) Not to mention that I write on the story since frikkin January.

Well, glad to be of service, lol.

And Reika I'd say slacking is what I do, no? I'm such a slow writer, it's not funny anymore. o__O Well, at least it is fun, except for the [...] days spent in front of my screen. I seem to have those again, though. I stopped my writings the last time in the middle of a convo (due to exhaustion), ...and now I'm staring my screen down because I don't remember what I wanted to achieve with said convo. Bleargh.

124,470 words apparently according to ff.net, and one more chapter to go. I am guilty of over-long chapters and have spent too long in Orzammar. My story makes no sense and will end on Orzammar too, lulz. If people want to see What Missa Did Next I'll get around to a sequel. IDK anymore.

It makes sense too- Dead Duster Walking, see. She's finally killed it.

I'm a horrible slacker. When I'm supposed to be writing almost anything else seems interesting.

One thing that has helped is I snagged some Red 'n Black notebooks on sale several months back. Curling up with a fountain pen and a notebook reminds me of my childhood and often allows me to write freely. Copying over the material to a computer then is trivial.

Of course last night I curled up with my notebook and ink pens in different colours, tea and jaffa cakes. I ate the cakes, drank my tea and wrote nothing. It's all soignee's fault. She keeps mentioning jaffa cakes. The pens had pretty colours though.

I always wondered if the authors handwave the impact of weather conditions on traveling time, food and clothing on purpose. Or is it merely an oversight?

I suppose it's the latter as most authors seem to state that they write without much plotting, and revising isn't very popular either. It's hard to keep track if you don't have an actual timeline established for yourself. I only know one author who's been writing her story for the last 6 months and is now busy editing and revising. I'm really curious to see if the story feels different from the ones done with the usual write and publish approach.

I joined an online writer's workshop recently and was made aware of the NaNoWriMo - the (inter)national novel writing month (november). The goal is to put out 85k or more words within one month - qualitiy doesn't matter, you are just supposed to write like mad. And when you're done writing ... go on rewriting. Good for me, as I'm very good at plotting but can't bring myself to write. Well, I do write, delete, write, delete, write, delete, give up and do some more plotting.

My concepts sound good but they would be even better if I would turn them into a story.
I have one about a servant at Amaranthine, probably the lady-in-waiting of a HNF Warden Commander. It's more about the commoners, rumours, racism, prejduices and the role of women in Ferelden. Also how much the people suffered from the Blight and that even 5 years later the country is poorer and closer to barbarism than ever.
And one about the barbarian tribes in the south and how shamanism and magic are organized there. If I only knew how to get exiled Alistair to travel that far south.

Edit: From weather conditions to story ideas. Sneaky. :D

If I'm honest, I handwave it mostly. I try to bring in such little details from time to time, but they always have to serve a purpose. Like my thunderstorm chapter or the mentioning of travel food in the current one I write (thx to Shadow ;) ) for example. I think those little details make a story more real/ livelier. Yet I do simply forget about them at times

Speaking of weather and timelines...when does the battle at Ostagar actually occur? Do they give the actual month's name when it occurred? Or are we suppose to judge based on the foliage?

I assumed it's fall, the last quarter of the year, so RtO in winter (and finding Cailan's corpse) makes a bit more sense. You could also use the following winter (especially long and harsh) to explain why Loghain retreats back to Denerim. The cold freezed his brain. (jk) It would delay the civil war a bit, warfare in winter is not something to be taken lightly.

It also explains why my characters go to the Tower and Redcliffe, then head back to Ostagar and after that travel further east. Not sure how to explain that they are looking for the Dalish in winter, maybe because it makes the Dalish settle down for a bit, so they might be easier to find?

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's summer.

In the dwarf noble origin, you can get a look at Trian's journal, and the last entry, which is the day of your military commission when the game actually begins, is 28 Ferventis.

Which is the equivalent of June as far as I can tell (sixth month of the year, otherwise known as Justinian).

So, if you get to Ostagar within two months at most, i'd say it's summer. And I'm pretty sure you arrive far faster.

Wow - thats some good sleuthing!  I had completely forgotten about Trian's journal....And I like this deduction better because it being in summer means that I am still good to go for ok weather in my story.  :)

Though, klarabella, I liked your idea that the upcoming cold is what made Loghain want to retreat so fast...and it would definitely make sense with RTO - otherwise I doubt his (Cailan's) body would be recognizable if it had to go through most of summer than fall...and then the GWs get there sometime in winter.  Ah, logical inconsistencies...how I love them!

I actually do normally work with a timeline for my stories (I usually end up writing stuff for roleplaying characters which actually have a calendar of all things. ;) ) so I've been trying to guesstimate based off what I could find in the game. And it's from that background why I tend to write in about taking breaks in places for R&R and worrying about supplies.

Now granted I try not to bog down the story with details, but it's good to include such concerns. And I did write in having horses because otherwise I don't see how the party would be hauling around the stuff they do, even with Bodhan's cart.

In-game, when Zevran offers you a massage one of the dialogue choices establishes that you don't actually have any horses so that's a really good question. Shale makes it sound like you make her carry some things but even she can only take so much.

Yeah, both Zev and Oghren mention no horses, but I had to do something to try to make it work in my head since I'm pretty sure Thedas doesn't have bags of holding. If it did, it'd make life so much more simple. :)

There is always the possibility of having a pack mule. You couldn't ride the thing into battle (Unless you were Oghren...), but it could probably travel with the party in a rather unobtrusive manner, and would likely be quite hardy given the variety of terrain.

Either that, or there're mabari-sized saddlebags and Dog carries all the extra equipment!

If I may, in my story after the Arlessa/Bann Teagan insists that my Warden goes to Denerim to try to find Brother Genitivi, they decide that its best for the Wardens to go undercover...so they go undercover as merchants (going to a city controlled by men who consider you traitors without some sort of disguise just seems rather silly to me....), which means they get an ox and cart, at least for the trip to Denerim and back. The merchant cover is working so well I'm tempted to do it else where in my story too. ;) Alistair would be thrilled because that means gigantic blocks o' cheese!!!

I also had Sten being the party "pack-mule" before Redcliffe... I've been tempted to go the actual pack-mule route (as it technically isn't a horse...so its not incredibly canon-breaking...) but so far I'm quite content with my merchant cover. :)

@ Icey - I've actually contemplated that (or get a small cart for the mabari to pull) but then I break out into a fit of giggles at the mental image and realize that while it MAY technically work, in reality, I don't think the mabari would tolerate it. :D
