Ya know... I don't like that word. If you must, say "In terms of merit, fan fiction is abysmal."

That doesn't quite convey the same meaning.

Ah...wordsmiths, yay!  How about "Fanfiction abysmally sucks?"  I think that works better since its layered meaning generally represents the varied and passionate views different people hold about the subject, no?

ROFL Ette! I love the occasional person who strolls on here, or trolls on here? And tries to start up the all fanfiction is crap thing.

Have those of you who write in notebooks, and who can read your own writing, do you find you stick close to what you write in the notebook or do you change it a lot?

I change it a lot since most of the writings are just "notes" and jotting here and there...plus, it's 3-4 edited drafts before I even post anything online. That's how I roll...

ROFL you are a better person than I am Ette. I edit as I go, then I edit again before I post, and then I edit after when I am reading it on FF.

But the whole point is that fanfiction sucks - not just in the quality of the writing but because it's annoying to write, it sucks you in, it makes you obsess, it eats up your time, it causes you pain etc.

So, whilst the 'abysmally sucks' or similar, would still work, it doesn't quite have the snappy, all-encompassing subtlety of the original.

I reckon.

Yeah, but we've already talked about editing can be a handicap because it breaks the reader's flow - I've got to pick up the pace of my writing and be as diligent as you are about getting things posted.

Wait, wouldn't that mean "fanfiction doesn't suck very much"?

Mauaahaa (evil laugh), my dear,Tara.  That's the beauty of language and interpretation - anyone of the common usage of the word abysmal would work to convey your sentiments above...layered words rock!

1 a : having immense or fathomless extension downward, backward, or inward
   b : immeasurably great : profound
c :  immeasurably low or wretched

It's all context - and you can make an agrument for either case of it being good or bad depending on your intent, right?

I see where you are going, Ette, and I do see the merits - and I had considered them whether you believe me or not is up to you ;). BUT it just doesn't say... 'forum'... or 'computer gamer'.. or 'slacker' to me. :) It's just not 'fan' enough.

Understood and completely agrees - the forum users should be the one to decide anyway.

There's actually quite a few LJ communities for DA.  If you check out the info for Swooping_is_bad, there should be a list of all the different communities if you want to watch/lurk.  I say this because I am selfish as I mod the Nathaniel Howe and dragonage_fic comms. :innocent:

That must take a lot of time - are there lots of members?  I haven't played Awakenings yet...

Thanks, Gil.  I'm sure you're pretty good with layered meanings as well...Haiku Master. :)

It sounds like a far bigger job than it really is.  The Nate comm has just over 100 members whereas swooping has over 1k.

download toolset and read not only the actual conversations but the voice actor notes, helps a tonne. I use it all the time now, it's really good for trying to work out NPCs.

Good advice and probably something I should do, but I doubt it would help my paranoia :) However way you turn it, and no matter how well I manage it in the end, it's still toying with someone else's character and I'm still going to fret over possibly not doing it justice. ;)

@Gil - Thank you for saying so. :)

LOL, I feel your pain Shadow. I too agonize about messing with someone else's character. I always fret too. I still say your Zev is one of the best around. And you are welcome the compliment is well earned. ^ _ ^

Okay I killed the thread. *cries*

Speaking of the bar graph on FF, does it make you feel bad if you don't get a chapter out and notice it dropping? I get this little flutter of ACK.

Uhm, no...haven't had a new chapter out for a while...the bars have been low even when I had new chapters compared to your bars...okay, let's not start comparing whose bars are better.  I'm going to start feeling like a guy now.

But, yeah, don't get depressed.  ;)
