There's been a lot of wankery
against those who write spankery
They may be right about smut
and may say so, but,
They're sounding as if they're writing crankily.

I identify with the first, but the second one 'flows' better.

Gotchya, you Duster, Uhl. ;)

I'm kidding.  I wasn't upset and he knows it.  If I were I would have just taken his dolls away.

Instapaper is my new love. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/love.png[/smilie] I can load up fanfic chapters and read them on the subway on my iphone without needing an internet connection. A quick google shows there are third party apps for most of the other smartphone OSs, too.

It has made my commute much more enjoyable, so I thought I would share. :D

Oddly enough, Instapaper from my computer to my ipad made me stay up through the night reading AoA.... and intermittently giggling and occasionally waking my husband up with my laughter.

Just so you know.

I *really* need to start reading/catching up on FF. Thing is, I'm also trying to catch up with writing my own after a 3-week break (which I promised not to do six weeks ago!) And I need to start writing dialogue for my DAO module.

*sigh* And Brotherhood comes out next week. And a project is due. And I haven't seen a friend of mine in 2-3 weeks. So many excuses...

Good grief! What did I start? I was having a whine and a moan because I wrote a big battle scene and got 2 reviews and my friend (with an excellent story) that is more romance focused gets 20. I didn't mean to start a row! *throw catnip into the room of hissing kitties*

I must say it has been interesting catching up.

It's especially amazing when you come back after a nap to see total derailment. Luckily, I haven't seen that in this thread in my time here.

*Blush* thanks, Gil.

@SoLD: they're not too much money these days. My iphone was only $99 new, a refurb would have been even cheaper. (Granted I have the 3GS and not the new 4G, but even so there's nothing I really feel like I miss out on.)

Mini rant

My stupid characters keep running down bunny trails. I'm starting to feel like a slave driver, with whips and chains to keep them in line and headed in the right direction. Is there any merit to letting them run free for a bit?

My problem is monthly plans. I barely use the (cheap) Nokia I have, it's just for the odd text and emergency calls since I am not a phone person. $30 generally lasts me three months, so I find it hard to justify updating to something more expensive (even if it's cool; I steer clear of fee-based MMORPGs too. Hooray for Guild Wars!). They are shiny toys to look at though. :)

I think we had a bunny trail discussion not so long ago. My take is that there is plenty of merit in letting the characters go where they want to go. But if you have a main plot in mind, especially if there are time constraints or elements of urgency involved, you have to be aware of it and know when enough free-roaming is enough as well as how you're going to tie back in to the story proper. But bunny trails can add spice, fresh ideas, and lead to unexpected awesome you realise you can use further down the track.

So roam at will, but don't let them get lost in the warrens. :)

Technically, the second chapter of my story is one huge bunny trail... that ended up becoming THE central part in my story because it molded perfectly with the main plot I had constructed.

So i am definitely FOR bunny trails.

It's surprising how often characters going off on bunny trails can lead to a deeper, richer story. It certainly speaks to the characterization itself, that they they've taken life enough of their own to try and go off on their own, so to speak. It certainly leads to more fun for the writer, even though at times it's like herding cats.

Basically, what Shadow and Raonar said.
