@SoLD: they're not too much money these days. My iphone was only $99 new, a refurb would have been even cheaper. (Granted I have the 3GS and not the new 4G, but even so there's nothing I really feel like I miss out on.)
My problem is monthly plans. I barely use the (cheap) Nokia I have, it's just for the odd text and emergency calls since I am not a phone person. $30 generally lasts me three months, so I find it hard to justify updating to something more expensive (even if it's cool; I steer clear of fee-based MMORPGs too. Hooray for Guild Wars!). They are shiny toys to look at though.

Mini rant
My stupid characters keep running down bunny trails. I'm starting to feel like a slave driver, with whips and chains to keep them in line and headed in the right direction. Is there any merit to letting them run free for a bit?

I think we had a bunny trail discussion not so long ago. My take is that there is plenty of merit in letting the characters go where they want to go. But if you have a main plot in mind, especially if there are time constraints or elements of urgency involved, you have to be aware of it and know when enough free-roaming is enough as well as how you're going to tie back in to the story proper. But bunny trails can add spice, fresh ideas, and lead to unexpected awesome you realise you can use further down the track.
So roam at will, but don't let them get lost in the warrens.
