The GM is a little huffy I've stopped writing for the game now I'm working on a fanfiction. In my defence, 250k words is pretty hefty. The Hunt hasn't hit 100k yet!
I do a bit of poetry, but rarely, only when the mood strikes me or I actually want a poem for something.
I also did dialogue writing for a Dungeon Siege mod (Ultima 5: Lazarus remake) a while back, which was awesome fun and we even got a double-page spread in Computer Gaming World.
Nothing professional, though. I've only ever done creative writing for fun, but it'd be great to do it professionally.
I grew up with my Atari (Nintendo, Sony, Xbox…have them all) and love my PRG’s, but I’m a casual gamer. This is my first foray into the fandom, and I have to say that I’m pretty awed and inspired by the passion I’ve seen here. Some of these mod projects are just damn creative and so involved.
I was dabbling with the toolset and wanted my story to be more a simple side-quest campaign, since I’m a visual person, but after toiling away I decided that I have no technical skills whatsoever to be able to do it “right.” So, I started my fan fiction instead – and let me tell you, it’s been a great challenge. I look at endless chapters people are writing and am in awe. We’re all creatures of habit, and mine is breaking out of the tight, economical journalism writing I’m so used to writing every day. So, it’s great to see how others are expressing themselves through their writing and work.
From what I’ve seen, you're all capable of writing and producing good work (professional quality), but I do have to admit that the transitioning into the “professional” creative writing world can be a bit daunting since it has so many different/possible channels. I’m looking at my calendar and it’s already getting filled to (possible) submission deadlines, and I’m thinking about culling my industry contacts for possible mentors and professional advice – there’s an unspeakable about of networking needed and knowing the conventions/culture is so important – which of course seems counterintuitive since your talent or work is supposed to speak for itself…sort of, but it doesn’t go anywhere if the “right” people don’t see it.
Anyway, as a sister in the struggle, I’m supportive of all your creative endeavors…now I’ve got to get lunch (always skipping it) before this two hour meeting. I’ll probably just write more scenes for my fan fiction – or jot down even more things on my perpetually neglected "to-do" list.
