Ok, a question I am not sure I have the correct answer to. Is Arl Bryland a cousin to the human Noble warden?

Never specified. He fought with HN's father and Arl Howe at the battle of White River, but as for the specifics of their relationship beyond friends and fellow nobles, nothing was ever said.

I think it would be very safe to assume there is at least some degree of familial relation, though, given the insular quality of Ferelden's nobility (only two characters married someone from outside Ferelden, after all- Arl Eamon and Fergus Cousland) and the historical tendency of nobles making alliances through marriage and only marrying among their own class.

I think it would be safe to guess the only member of Ferelden's nobility who doesn't have at least a dozen different family connections to other nobles would be Loghain (and the Warden Commander, in Awakening).

Aha. I stumbled over several fanfics where Bryland was written as the cousin, that's why I asked, and I also plan to use this idea to some extent (he IS the one that always sides with the Warden at the Landsmeet after all.)

Thanks for responding.

It's pretty much fanon by this point. It's the easiest thing in the world to make him a relative of Eleanor since we know nothing about her and being from a family with an Arling would explain why she was considered suitable to marry a Teyrn.

Anyone else find that when you hate what is going on in RL that your writing suffers? I am having one of those moments. May I have some cheese with my whine? Or did Ali eat it all? LOL!

Not hate, per se, but so many things happen that interrupt what Im doing at the least convenient of times that I often ask myself if my karma is acting up (and the answer might just be yes. I'll have to find one of my earlier incarnations and interrogate it a bit).

Dear Dalish Elf Character of Mine,

It would be nice to remember that when you decide you're going to say something really long and complicated in Elvish, that the person who is writing you does not speak or write Elvish.

Thanks!

@inquartata02 ROFL! Yes, it would be nice of her to remember that you don't speak the language. Characters can be so inconsiderate!

I have come to the realization that I hate it when people tell me something I've written is 'decent.' I mean, I know that they probably mean it as a compliment but to me 'decent' falls somewhere in between "Well, it doesn't suck" and "I like it."

This will likely cause y'all to shun me, but I'm having a 'Silence of the Lambs' moment with one of my characters. Maker as my witness, she started to run off in the Deep Roads to do her own thing and I mentally said to her 'It puts the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again.'

It's probably time to take a break from writing.

Problem for me is, it's Zevran who takes off.  Can you just imagine his response to that threat?

Silence is preferable to even a partial compliment?

I think Sarah1281 sets something of a high standard for what she writes and is a bit disheartened when reviewers make it sound like she's fallen short of meeting it :P

No one's going to write pure gold all the time. :P What I'm curious about is if writers want to hear when readers didn't think a story/chapter Wowed them, or if they would prefer silence to a lukewarm review if they can't get a glowing one.

I would rather hear why it didn't wow them or what they hope in future for the story or a character... That kind of stuff is useful...

I'd love detailed criticism (what worked, what didn't work, what characters are plausible, what characters aren't, pointers to any poor writing). The problem is that is asking a lot of your readers.

*peeks inside thread, slinks into a corner and joins the madness*

Hey everybody, I'm an alcoholic.. I mean.. I'm a wannabe writer..looking for some cool lore info to use in my writing.

Is there a better source of Dalish/Elvish words or terminology than the DA Wiki? I'm currently following my Dalish Warden around and I'd like to understand her a bit better, she's illiterate you see when it comes to Common (or whatever the human language in Ferelden is actually called) but she can read/write/speak scraps of Dalish and I'd like to use some established terms before I start trying to make up my own.

Any help would be nice, thanks :)

Hmm, I don't think there is anything better than the Wiki page, at least I haven't found anything.

The wiki is what I use. It seems to be a pretty comprehensive article.

(Interesting aside, because the Wiki mentions the ghostly boy and mother: Although the ghosts do appear to be speaking elvish, if you check their ears, you'll find that they're humans. Dun dun dun...)

Well, the problem of asking that of your average reader is that the best response you'll get is a, b, or c sucked.

They won't be able to articulate WHY, or even what they think would work better. And all of us (the members of this thread) don't have time to go to everyone's fic site and give decent round-table criticism.

On the other hand, it's been two updates and no new reviews on my and my co-writers' ME fic.  So... SOMETHING is better than nothing.
