No wonder Bhelen eats her up. He loves preserved food!

Huh. Someone just sent me a long, detailed, very formally written proposal for a fanfic they want me to write.

And they called me "ma'am"

I'm not sure how to react to this.

Encourage them to write it themselves?

I'm thinking that's probably the best idea. It isn't even the sort of fic I'd be any good at writing. It just took me by surprise.

Just... MA'AM! I'm 31! That's too young to be called ma'am!

Not at all. Where I am, properly mannered children would have been calling you that for thirteen years. You'd be insulted if anyone did not use the word.

I've been ma'amed since I was 20. It's a Southern thing.

Ah...

Northeastern city dweller here. Usually if someone is being called ma'am it's because they're either old enough to collect social security or it's meant as a insult.

Yeah, NE city dweller as well (until I moved in September). If somebody called me "ma'am" it was not a good thing.

I did get "Miss Firstname" a lot.

In the midwest (at least near Chicago) "ma'am" is also not really used. Maybe if someone was being overly formal, but even then it would be more for older women.

Edit: Stats are back! I'm not sure how long it's been but it says I've had 446 today.

Was there ever any toolset information released for Awakening/DLCs? I'd love to have access to all of Anders' dialogue (the Wiki has most of it but not all).

I looked, but couldn't find anything. :( If we could access Awakenings/DLC files, someone might have fixed the PC bugs by now. ;)

My hubby is southern-raised, and "ma'am" is a respectful term with him.  In fact, his momma would probably still whup his butt if he didn't use it, and we both turned 37 in the last few weeks.  But here in SoCal, I think pretty much everyone is "dude."  Posted Image

Seriously though, IMHO, if a woman is older than you, they're "ma'am," if they're younger, they're "miss."  Seems to work for me, anyway....

I did have a teacher insist on calling all of the girls in our class 'Miss so-and-so' but she was Russian so that might have been more of a Russian thing than anything else. Aside from that, I'd be hard-pressed to think of any similar respectful addresses where I live aside from the usual honorifics (Mr., Ms., Mrs.)

I count it a victory if no one shouts "hey baby" at me on the street for a week.

Although I still prefer that over "hey! Hey! Hey! Can I have a dollar got an extra cigarette hey don't ignore me hey I'm talking to you, ****!"

(thankfully not much of an issue in my neighborhood. But seeing as how there are six gay bars between me and the closest subway station I think our demographics are a bit different. The last shout I got near my own apartment was a drag queen yelling from across the street that my hair color was fierce. I don't get catcalls. I get fashion critique.)

Good point. Interesting that it has such a negative connotation.

Yep. And really, most catcalls are, um... sort of nice? In a weird, wrong way. I mean, "nice ass" isn't a bad thing, per se. Just not something most people want howled at them on a crowded street.

But... I wanted to share this. For anyone thinking of preordering Dragon Age 2 on PC there's a 25% off sale on direct2drive until tomorrow morning. Ended up only being $45!

I'm thinking steam is a lost cause by now, as much as it annoys me.

I agree, catcalls can be flattering, as long as they're not nasty.  I can still remember the day I was walking home from school and heard a honk, looked over and saw someone driving by me -- holding up a card with the number 10 on it.  that was over twenty years ago and it still makes me laugh!

*muttergrumble* I'd like to have a PC that could run even DA:O at high specs. Husband has a PC but it's getting old, RAM and video card are as upgraded as they can get with the motherboard in it, while I've got a macbook. DA:O doesn't run fantastically on either system. I have to lower the specs so much that the graphics are below even the 360 version that both of us have played extensively.

Very sad. I want to see the real DA:O graphics.

I was in the same boat for a long time- my last computer was a pentium 4 (but hey, it had hyperthreading. woo boy) with a gb of ram. Dragon age looked... well, godawful on it.
My mom gave me money towards a new desktop for Christmas, though, and there was a decent system on sale at New Egg not too long ago so I finally sucked it up. I usually don't upgrade until flames shoot out from the top or something, (seriously, my last system was cobbled together from three old systems that had all died for different reasons)
My video card is on the really low end of the specs, though... only an nvidia 8600. I may upgrade eventually, but I don't really have the money for it at the moment, and I'd need to get the power supply while I was at it, which is kind of a pain.

We had to buy an all new computer when AVG deleted an essential file as a virus. Then we found the hard drive was only able to access half the RAM it should have been able to.

So, we upgraded. And I still play DA on the XBOX. And will probably continue to do so. Means no screenies of Moira, though.

Anyone know offhand if it's canon or fanon that Grey Wardens can sense other Wardens like they can darkspawn?
