And now I start having images of Goose and Kenny Loggins in my head.  Dammit!

Strangle your inner critic until he's constructive. Mine is currently locked up in a cage. I feed him bad poetry.

This is definitely something I must master.  Not only is my inner critic free, she tosses around personal insults in addition to the nasty critiques.  The weenie.

I've always imagined mine as an ill-tempered dwarf with a bowler hat that chain smokes cigars and uses a cane offensively.  Nothing is good enough for him.  Hence the cage.

Personally, I prefer a few fight scenes with my romance. I don't mind it, but I prefer it to not be the only plot.

I like gushy stuff.

I have one story that's half the length of another story, but has just as many reviews. Does this mean it's twice as good? It also has twice as many favorites.  Arahahahaaaa!

Some people think that the length determines a good story or not. That's not always the case. I've read long ass novels that I thought were total crap and short novels that were great and vice versa. It all depends on the person reading it. Some want that long story that keeps them going while others want the proverbial one night stand.

Story A has Chapters B, Reviews C, and Favorites D. Story W has Chapters X, Reviews Y, and Favorites Z.

W = B/2
Y = C
Z = D*2

W must be superior to A! But how?! I need to know why my one story is better than my other story so I can write an even better story and get i > C | Y.

True that!  Sometimes I just want  to send stalker emails out to folks that fav and leave no review and ask them: WHY DO YOU LIKE ME SO MUCH?

Then I swallow down my anxious voice with another swig of wine and go hang out in the corner and cry.  Ok, maybe I don't actually cry...

You just hug your teddy bear and say it's going to be okay ;)

I just assume what I'm doing is good and keep at it. I mean if they add it to a favorites and subscribe then you must be doing something right. All I can think of is to compare the two works and not look at the length. What's different about them content wise?

If numbers on deviant art is anything to by, less than 1% of people who fav or watch your work actually post comments.

Right? Is it so much to ask for a detailed analysis of all my stories to date including their strength and weaknesses in terms of character, plot, pacing, and quality of writing?!

No more of this "It will be interesting to see where your story goes from here, I have enjoyed it so far" crap - I need a three page essay!

Mmm...Marcus. :wub: Leliana's my girl, just wait until part three's introduction of Boris and Ebrauc. *fan girl squeal*

But on a serious matter, this fan fiction stuff is really kicking my a**.  Is anyone else struggling to find the balance between the story's natural development and what you want?  You know, following that whole hero's journey (which hero?) and the story arc (which arc, and at which point?).  Short story versus novel?

This simple three (now four part) side quest keeps getting more complicated.  I'm all about a good balance of action, romance, political intrigue and good characterization.  But there are times when I just want Wynne to wave her staff and make it all disappear.  Don't let me get started on the language...small clothes, ser?  Did someone leave it in the dryer too long?  Who'd thought English would be such a foreign language.   So much work to do to be convincing…

Anyway, enough of my rant…back to editing/beating this story into submission.

I am notorious for not commenting, unless I'm totally flabbergasted. Or if I think someone needs some encouragement. That said, I get all fuzzy when I get reviews/comments/faves etc. Like a dork.

I sometimes shy away from actual critiques, because it usually goes badly. And even snarky/joke comments get my bottom reamed. So shutting up is usually my MO.

But rambling aside, I think a lot of stories/art/creations are favorites more for content, than actual skill. And also for this magic networking thing that I fail at. My story/art could rock the world, but no one will be able to comment if they aren't finding it. It's the magic of getting lost in a HUGE pond of stuff. I mean, how much weeding through CAPS LOCK pr0n and sketches on lined paper is someone willing to do to fish little gems out after all?

The term ‘hero’s journey’ makes my eye twitch. I hate that Campbellian BS.

My problem is that all of my characters want to make out with one another. Morrigan pinned Leliana to the wall in my last chapter and I’m going, “Wait, you’re straight. Remember that Morrigan?”

I don’t have any plans for length or not at this point.

You aren't the only one that has those issues.  And I'll admit, sometimes I take a few liberties and add something in because I want it there because it became a little ant in my brain crawling around that wouldn't go away until I put it out there for all to read.

And yes, some of the terminology is a bit foreign. I have a horrible habit of add in modern lingo/jokes into my writing.  Odiedragon always calls me on that stuff to her credit (or my chagrin depending on my mood of the day :P).

I think fanfiction should be encouraged, as long as the characters aren't Mary Sue or if the characters don't necessarily have a large impact on the world. I would right some if I had more time, effort, and overall knowledge about the lore.
