So long as it's a good read all the way through, I don't care how long or short something is. Quality over quantity.

I agree 100%.

Plus, being lazy, I must admit that I would far rather read the "best of" 100K words than the entire 400K words.   I'm the kind of person that abridgments were made for.

Aw, Addai, I understand those feelings. I wanted DA2 to be Like ME2, a continuation.  Lucky for me, my story has a life of its own, so much so it is not affected by my disappointment in DA2.

@Mahkara, don't read mine then, unless you want me to give you a list of chapters that hit the highlights. ROFL!

I was upset a bit about DA2 for a while but now I'm looking forward to it. I'm not sure that any video game can replace Dragon Age Origins for very long for me, and I imagine DA2 won't either. I just wish they would do some more expansions for DAO, but I realize they have their main focus on DA2 and MassEffect. I wonder if DA2 will have a large group of fanfiction writers too. LOL.

Hawke, Carver and Bethany actually made a cameo (two in the case of the men) in my fanfiction. They WERE at Ostagar and Lothering after all.

@Shadow, same here for me Shadow.

Let me just say to you all that I don't get to review like I want, or read, all of your stories. But you all are so good. I enjoy each and everyone of your styles. And there is a LOT of talent on this forum. Shadow, Sarah, Maria, Inquartata, Raonar, Lupus...you all rock.

Thanks Gil...

@Merilsell, that happens to me from time to time too! It will pass, but don't force it. My only advice is to relax and let it unblock on its own. Glad I am not the only wordy person here. : D

Aww thanks for the nice words, Gil.

I made some progress today however. I'm just writing for the Alistair prompt and not for my FF but at least I'm writing again. This is something good, yes?

Let's hope that I'm able to do at least a tiny scene for my FF as well.

I had a friend who did this once for her fic.  ;)  I was actually super helpful.  That way I could skim most of it, then pay special attention to the chapters that she thought were super important to the plot.   I think that was one of the few long fics that I made it through.  (What can I say...I tend to be a short story and novella reader, and it's hard to read on the computer. Yeah, yeah, I like whining...)

Add me to the list, I don't think I'd written more than a handful of paragraphs since Dragon Age came out.  It started with me playing the hell out of the game, and then starting to read fanfic for the first time ever since I just wanted more about the world to entertain myself.
When I started a creative writing class I was so absurdly out of practice, being ten years out of school and even longer since I'd done any creative writing.  I decided I needed to do a bit more to get my skills up to par and ended up starting a fanfic.

 Thank you, Gil!

You know, I don't get how people are already writing about DA2.  We don't know anything about the characters yet.  Just seems like jumping the gun.

I'm slightly disapointed that a lot of the characters from Origins and Awakening who I loved won't be returning, but I can sort of see the point.  The Warden story is at a place where they would need to make dozens of different games to continue it for each permutation of the romances and ending decisions.
And I was the same way when I found out about Awakening.  I was SO PISSED Zevran wouldn't be in it.  It turned out all right for me, though. ;)
So I'll reserve judgement until I play the game.

Same here Lupus, I have DA2 on reserve. I will wait to see how it goes. I just wish it had been more like ME2. But won't know til I play how I'll like it. And you are welcome! I love your stories!

Hi :)

So, I just found this thread, started at page one, then quickly realised you were at over 300 pages so jumped straight to the end (I'm a dedicated forum reader, but sometimes daunting thread length is daunting).

Hmm, so 2 months before the release of DA2 I've finally started writing DAO fic :pinched: Don't really know why I'm posting here; I don't have anything to share yet, but perhaps I just wanted to be around like-minded folk. Hope that's okay!

I'm queen of starting things, king of never finishing them ... but I really hope this won't be the case with my stories.

I knew I wanted to tell my Mass Effect story, about my 'canon' James Shepard, and started writing that. It was my first fic, and I hit a wall quickly. So I skipped ahead to a scene later on I'd had in my mind, but after a while realised the voice was all wrong, and stopped writing. It's still sat there waiting to be taken up again.

When it came to DA I couldn't imagine writing about the in-game characters. For various reasons, a story emerged about some OCs who never interact with the warden, and so I started writing it. I was pretty much certain about their whole story, what would happen, why, where it would go, and think it fits nicely into the same backdrop as the game. Anway, I hit a bit of a road bump when I realised I should actually change a couple of the characters around ... and I stopped writing. It's still sat there waiting to be taken up again.

Since then I've fired up DAO again to play the origin stories I never got around to the first time. This time I picked Dalish. As I was playing the origin, something strange happened. I was imagining my character's previous life, what led him to act as he did in the origin, who the people at camp were to him, what relationships he had with them. I'd never put that much thought into my DA games before, just played them out and invested in what choices I made as the games went on. It came as a bit of a shock, but I realised my Dalish elf had a story to tell.

And so, I've made a start today on his story. It's starting about a year or so before the events at the beginning of the game. I don't have everything worked out (obviously!), but I know a few of the issues I want to deal with. I've only played the human noble (several times), city elf (once) and human mage (once) before, and none of them grabbed me as much as the Dalish story. Whether that's because I hadn't got my fic cap on when playing the others or not I don't know, but regardless I'm excited to tell this story and get more involved in Elven lore.

So, that's why I'm in this thread, to say hi, as a newbie to fanfic (although I've read a bunch - although at the moment I'm wary of reading any dalish origin fic for fear of finding my story already written), and to throw my insecurities and blatherings out there to people who are no doubt ramping up to start writing about DA2 now anyway. Always late to the party, that's me ;)

So, hi :kissing:

*runs away again*

Welcome aboard! Like we were saying earlier- it really seems like DA has struck a cord with a lot of people who never really wrote fanfic (or any fic) before.

I have no idea if I'll write anything for DA2. I have another DAO story planned out already for when my current one ends. Who knows, though. When I got Awakenings I blasted through it in two days and had the first chapter of my first Anders fic up a day after that...

*pokes head back in*

That's another of my newbie worryings - what if I play DA2 and get swept up with those characters and have even more stories I want to write? I only have so much time. Will I still be flogging the DA horse in 5 years time? 10 years time? Where does it become an obsession? lol.

(I haven't even played Awakenings yet. It's sat still in its box waiting to get installed.)

I'm trawling through the fic synopsis thread atm ... just reading the synopses but man you guys have some fabulous ideas! Mine seems to be just a normal 'so here's my warden ... his story, let me tell you it' kinda thing ...

In awe.

Welcome, Cata!

I don't have any writing planned for DA2. Once my DAO stuff is done, I'll go back to my original stuff full-time instead of part-time.

although at the moment I'm wary of reading any dalish origin fic for fear of finding my story already written)

You should be okay. Then again, half the time I'm writing one of my Dalish characters, I start wondering if she's channeling Merisell's Lenya at times. I have to watch for that. But then I realize that my Dalish isn't anywhere near as volatile.

What I mean to say is, you should be fine in reading what you enjoy, no matter what you write. :)

Welcome Cata!!! Well I have several more DAO stories planned besides the three I am already writing simultaneously and I may be at it for 10 years, ROFL!!! Oh well, as obsessions go, it could be worse, no? Don't worry about reading the rest of this thread. It is really a support group for the DA and ME fanfic writing obsessed. I would say we have a 12 step program, but it isn't to get over our addiction. I don't know if I will have story ideas for DA2, I will know after I play it. If you need any help or have any questions please feel free to PM me; and welcome aboard the crazy fanfic obsession train. ^_^

Thanks for warm welcome guys.

I realised last night that to tell the story I want I'm going to have to make it somewhat AU. Actually, I'm not sure. There are 2 ways it could develop, but I think the AU version would allow me to get more of the stuff I want across.

The only AU thing involved would be that when our Mahareil leaves with Duncan to join the wardens, someone else goes along with them. It's not totally out of the realm of possibility this could have happened anyway, but safer to embrace its AU nature than try to butcher the story to fit it into the canon. Other game events will likely remain as they are in canon (player choice excepted), but the fact this extra character (not an OC, and no, not Tamlen - poor Tamlen D:) will be around and involved in those events takes it into AU territory, right?

(Sorry for asking for clarification; I'm still feeling my way around fandom terms, and would like to avoid incurring the wrath of those on ff.net if I mislabel something.)
