I'm really amazed by the large numbers of words you can have for your story! I'm still around 38k and counting haha. Though that's only with 13 chapters so far.

I won't write a DA2 Fic until I've played it and got something that I want to write really :) I mean, no matter what I've read so far I believe a better base for a Fic is to actually have played it.

Besides the fact that this is the first time, I believe, that I'm posting here myself, welcome here catabuca ;)

Hi fellow n00b :kissing:

I'm of the same mind about DA2 - I'm intrigued by many of the characters, but I'd rather find out who they are and what their world is like (because our blight world is only part of it) before thinking about writing anything about them.

Ha! I'm already generously using it for this story. I use Scrivener software for writing, and it has the ability to import web pages for easy reference. I have quite the collection for this now, and it's expanding all the time :D

I've been outlining today, and it's going reasonably well. There are a few major points I'm still trying to decide on, that I need to get sorted before I start writing so I make sure I'm consistent later on, but other than that I'm relatively happy to let the bulk of it just happen when it happens. The main plot points I want to happen are getting sketched out first (across the whole story) in the outline, and then I'm going back to the beginning to start writing.

Biggest problem at the moment is choosing a name for my Mahariel. I went with the default when I played the game, but I want my story warden to have a different one. I spent ages and ages yesterday with the elven language wiki entry trying to create a name that would be meaningful as well as, well, sounding nice, but they were all pretty rubbish. I HATE trying to think of names. It's something I suck at more than a big sucky thing that does nothing all day long but suck.

This is a great resource for real names. It's how I found out that Daveth, Jory and Jowan are all Cornish names.

That's fantastic, thank you! I did browse a few name databases yesterday, but they all seemed to have the same names, and none felt like Dalish elven names. Plenty I could have used for a Cousie or a Brosca, maybe even a city elf, but nothing felt right. I've just opened the 'mythical names' section of that site though, so maybe there will be something there!

Thanks :)

To be honest, I make up my Dalish names since they don't have an applicable "history" like Ferelden names do. So if I'm coming up with names for a Ferelden, I'll use that site (which I love) but my elves all have made up names. Kara isn't, of course, but it's shortened from Karaleyna, which is. lol I actually did go and luck up all the elven names from in-game to see if any of them had a significant lore they were drawn from and couldn't find one, whereas a bunch of human names are older European ones.

For the world I can see that working, but not so much for the DA2 characters.

But then, a substantial portion of the Fenris art I've seen seems to ignore DG's statement that he hates to be touched, so I suppose people aren't really interested in their personalities right now, if they're disregarding the small amount of info already out there.

Mousestalker: I LOVE that site. I use it constantly.

Also, FYI, Godiva coffee is FREAKING SPECTACULAR! And now cheaper than the local grocery chain's higher end whole bean store brand coffee for me.

I love behindthename.com. I try, whenever possible, to give characters names with significant meanings when it comes to who the character is. When someone reads my story, they don't have to know what a name means to get the story, but it gives added depth if anyone cares to check. Or sometimes it's brought up naturally within the story. Another thing I try to do (but is really difficult) is keeping significant characters with names that don't start with the same letter. I don't remember where I heard that rule, but I've been trying to follow it for a good long while. It's a pain in the ass at times.

For the Dalish names, I ran into a problem trying to figure out how to name clans. I did a google on 'Mahariel' and it turned out to be the name of an angel (it also means swift). Then I decided I'd use obscure angel names for Dalish clans. There's lots (I minored in Theology... how did my education miss that part?) and with a ton of different meanings.

Also... this forum needs a preview button for posts.

Edit: @LupusYondergirl (do I have to type out the whole thing? Then again, calling someone Lupus is just awkward, unless you're House): What do you use to make your coffee?

Interestingly, Tabris (or Tabbris) is an angel name as well, means self determination :)

Scottish sci-fi writer Iain M Banks (I'm a Culture fan...) uses that rule and he has an alphabetical list when drafting and covers from A-Z.:alien:

PS Bookmarked that site...

I love to research names before choosing one *sighs in contentment* It makes it all worth it :)

I also have a habit of using the default name but changing the spelling to make it unique :)

Ooh, love that.

I try to use real(ish) names whenever possible, because I suck at coming up with original ones.  So I might look at a list of the English lords chamberlain or mayors of London or whatever, pick a name, and maybe change it slightly.  It doesn't have to mean something, I just want it to sound like it could be real.  I'd rather most names blend into the background and not stick out.

Since we're talking about this anyway, how do your characters themselves feel about their names? My own protagonist (DN) whom my account is named after actually hates the name Raonar.

That is cold to get me all excited by such a question. hehe don't get me started on how characters feel about their own names. LOL. I could go on about this forever... LOL. Aonghas thinks his name is the greatest name to ever grace a person. LOL. LOL we should all add a conversation into our stories about the name of our mains, that would be a hilarious.

So anyways 'so and so' what does your name mean? really? and you like your name? no? blah blah haahha

Aonghas would use one of Zevran's phrases to describe his name can you guess which? LOL

You know, I never wondered what my characters thought of their names. Now I will have to make them (or someone else around them), wonder. Muahahaha.

Naming my Dalish Lenya was the rare rush of an epiphany I had when staring at the screen where the default name "Lyna" was displayed. Normally I just suck at naming characters. There, I randomly changed the characters and got Lenya. I instantly loved the name, so I kept it and grew very fond of it, since I can imagine that as an actual Dalish name. It was much later that I got to know that "Lenya" is a real name. Funny, that.

This being said I don't like the default names of DA anymore. I have simply seen them too often and it got boring fast. Seriously, if I have to hear or read the name "Elissa Cousland" in a DA-story one more time I'll smash my computer screen. D:

Gawd, at least name the character you write about PROPERLY. Ugh. [/minirant]

Best skip my story then. Wouldn't want to cost you a computer screen. Whew! Good thing I warned you in time! There's some luck.

Anything works, really.  It's a bastardized William Gibson reference.  In Neuromancer Lupus Yonderboy was the heavily body-modded leader of a technology-obsessed street gang.

I don't have anything fancy for coffee.  Just this thing. Which I admit, I got because it was silver and red, and matched all my other kitchen stuff.

I think I tend to go a lot more celtic than anglo-saxon for names than the majority of people, but since I have an academic background that leans that way it's just easier for me. That, and there are a lot of what I suspect to be intentional references to the Ulster Cycle in the Ferelden mythology (especially Cuchulainn and Conchobar. The whole Flemeth history reminds me strongly of the Conchobar and Dierdre stories, but with a wildly different ending.)

edit: Maggie's name is going to come up in a couple chapters in AOA, actually.  All she knows now is that, for some reason, she went from being called Peggy to being called Maggie when she got to the tower, and can't remember why.

Uh, guys? I just noticed something:

Garret Hawke =? Gary Stu
Marian Hawke =? Mary Sue

Conincidence?

As for Tayte's name... I don't know what she thinks of it. I may have to ask her. ;p

But I found this interesting...

LOL, Jakkel, I just used that and THIS is what i got.

P.S.

I SO dare you all to search for the anagrams fro Leliana and Morrigan.

And check out the anagram for Bhelen Aeducan. Can you see the irony? BEHEAD UNCLEAN is the anagram... I wonder if the one that gave him that name knew of this...

Just curious. I use the aeropress. It was a gift from a barista friend and I love it.

I've noticed that similarity, too. When I heard/read the Flemeth history in the game, I was very, "Hey... I've heard this before. Or something like it." Then I was very, "Wait... Morrigan... feathers... crow... the Morrígan. Say what? I see what you did there, Bioware."

Right, so Bhelen Aeducan gets the anagram BEHEAD UNCLEAN while Trian Aeducan gets A NUT RADIANCE. Endrin Aeducan gets CRUDE AND INANE...

I can't help but feel it all fits a bit too well...
