That is cold to get me all excited by such a question. hehe don't get me started on how characters feel about their own names. LOL. I could go on about this forever... LOL. Aonghas thinks his name is the greatest name to ever grace a person. LOL. LOL we should all add a conversation into our stories about the name of our mains, that would be a hilarious.

So anyways 'so and so' what does your name mean? really? and you like your name? no? blah blah haahha

Aonghas would use one of Zevran's phrases to describe his name can you guess which? LOL

I am SO doing this :D

Because I'm choosing a name that means something, he's going to have a conversation where someone tells him "it's a bit cliché isn't it?", or along those lines :D

Bwahahahaha! Using Maggie's full name I got GRIM GRACE MAN-EATER. Shortened name was EAGER MAGIC IN GEM. I find this painfully amusing. Nothing interesting if I used Amell, but that hasn't been her last name for quite some time now. My own name didn't get anything good but it has too many repeated letters to be useful.

@inquartata- I have a standard basic Bodum french press, but when I'm at home I drink way too much coffee to make it a cup at a time.  I drink a LOT of coffee.  Like, a pot a day.  Sometimes more.  My roommate always says he's afraid he'll come home and find me collapsed on the keyboard clutching my chest, some video game still on.

And my team lead from my last job, just before I got laid off, texted me to ask if I wanted to come back. So I'm hoping HR will call me very, very soon! I loved that job and it had fantastic benefits. IT industry rocks.Only job where you can talk video games with everyone.
Hopefully it'll pan out since I just dipped into my savings for a new suit, my old one from a couple years ago was too big now. (Interviews suck. I know the place is 'just don't wear jeans and t-shirts' level casual, but I still need to have the lousy suit for the interview)

My protagonist thinks his name is weird (which is true) and that the meaning doesn't fit him (he;ll get over it). Considering his mother also has a weird name, for a dwarf (Errinne), he will inevitably remark that the people on his mother's side of the family had an issue with weird names. His mother originally wanted Trian to be called Raonar, but Endrin didn't want his heir to have such a weird name, so they compromised and said the second son would be called that...

Tragic, isn't it?

EDIT

I hope it works out, Lupus!

I don't have anything fancy for coffee.  Just this thing. Which I admit, I got because it was silver and red, and matched all my other kitchen stuff.

Just curious. I use the aeropress. It was a gift from a barista friend and I love it.

I think I tend to go a lot more celtic than anglo-saxon for names than the majority of people, but since I have an academic background that leans that way it's just easier for me. That, and there are a lot of what I suspect to be intentional references to the Ulster Cycle in the Ferelden mythology (especially Cuchulainn and Conchobar. The whole Flemeth history reminds me strongly of the Conchobar and Dierdre stories, but with a wildly different ending.)

snip

Totally OT, but I use an aeropress too. Fantastic invention, so quick and easy, and makes excellent coffee (coming from a bit of a coffee snob who grinds her beans immediately before brewing, and has fresh beans every week )

Can you guys believe Bryce Cousland gets NOBLY ACCURSED as an anagram? This is a serious case of collective consciousness influence I tell you!

I should stop doing this. I'll be here all night. Although I will say, that anagram generator is having a serious influence on my choice of name for my Mahariel XD

Aedan Cousland is "nausea and cold". Poor guy.

Alistair Thierin is "trashier initial" Of course, he didn't really use his last name, he could be "It as liar" instead.

Bhelen Aeducan is "Behead unclean"

You guys really put a lot more effort into names than I do. I'm perfectly content to find an elf or dwarf name generator and keep going until I find one that I like. I suppose that's better than just going with the first one listed but still it's a great deal of a shorter process than in-depth research. Of course, if I am ever called upon to name something, I'd just go with a name that I liked the sound of and not pay the slightest bit of attention to what it meant.

Oh, and I never use/hate reading default names because it feels unoriginal (although I know why some people use them) and I find it easier to keep track of different Wardens if they have actual different names. I also just have always disliked the name Elissa which doesn't help.

I go the reverse, for just the same reason.  If given my head, I'd probably turn Ferelden into a ninth century mead-hall.

I went with a Norwegian family name.  Magda was a great aunt's name.

For humans my technique has mostly been to think of an anglo-saxon name and see how it translates into Gaelic or Welsh.

I am lazy and use defaults, other than for dwarfs.  Dwarfs need stone names.  That is just the way it is.  My dwarf must = Agate or Obsidian or Granite or whatever.  He/she cannot use the stupid defaults.   Also, for singular characters (i.e. Shepard, Hawke) I tend to use them.  But it's so much easier to use "Elissa" than having everyone like "who in the heck is this Aurelia we keep reading about? Oh, I see, Aurelia Cousland..."

But I'm really into names, so if I name someone something, I tend to try to have it mean something.  Or be a pun.  (I really need to write more of Faeol Shepard...)

I've never actually had that problem but then I always use first and possibly-not-real last name the first time the Warden shows up.

hmmm how much do you figure a pack animal would cost in Ferelden? LOL. If Aonghas doesn't purchase one he'll be walking next to his horse. hahaha.

For general comparative prices I like this list.

Short answer: assuming you go with the high end of the price for pack horses, given how rare they are in Ferelden, it would be almost as much as a year's tuition at Oxford, and about the same as the annual rent on a very modest house. So... a lot.

I have a question, if anyone is familiar with the dalish origin. How old is Fenarel supposed to be? I assumed he was the same age as the warden and Tamlen, or thereabouts, but the codex calls him a 'young dalish elf', where all the others are just described as dalish elves. He didn't seem young to me, and his picture doesn't look any younger. Is there anything that references it more specifically? I was writing him the same age, but now I'm worried.

That's an awesome resource thanks. I was thinking more of a pack animal than a horse. :)

I'll probably avoid saying an amount for payment so nobody will say that my values are way off. LOL.

I always got the impression he was a bit younger than the warden and Tamlen; a few years maybe, but if you click on some of the elves in camp they refer to Tamlen and the future warden as the 'clans' young. I'll go in game and try to find the exact reference to how the young hunters are viewed and get back to you :)
