And also the kind of story it is matters.

When my story was just a kink-meme fill, I used Elissa, and I would probably do so for any one-off kmeme fills.  But when the story evolved beyond a simple fill into something more and I realized I would be polishing it up and doing a more flushed-out version, I knew she had to have something other than the generic name.

Yeah, I agree.  I'm not sure how much I'd like the generic for a super detailed story where the Warden was the main character.  Just in that it can be really confusing to go, "Oh, was this Elysium's Elissa or Sarah's Elissa?" when discussing the fic with other people.  Non-default names can be really helpful there.  Especially if the character's not supposed to be a super-generic Warden.

Yep. that is pretty much what I meant. Using the default name for a rather...."light" story (kmeme) or when this character appears only briefly is imo totally acceptable in my books. I *might* will have an AU- appeareance of Elissa Cousland later on too and it will be helpful to use this name then since (if) she'll only appear briefly and yet everyone knows then whom I write about. Using the default name for the main character, however, will get confusing fast. Then is imo an unique name choice the better way to portray your character. :)

Especially if your character is a "noted casualty." ;p

I've given up on looking on FF.net lol. Even though it would be nice to see if people read your story, we'll just have to assume they do. ;-)

Anybody else holding back a chapter because of the FF.net debacle?

Heh, not me.  I'm holding back a chapter because it has major problems and I'm waiting for a beta to get back to me, lol.  I don't think I'd hold back a fic just for stats - especially if the review function was working.  I mean, stats are nice, but not that important to me.

Yeah, but I don't get many reviews so it's just encouraging to know that people are reading... It's winter here, I am supposed to be looking for a job and I spend most of the day alone... I need the stats...

That's understandable. It's winter here too and we just got five inches of snow. It's only January and I'm already tired of the grey skies and cold. Spring can't come soon enough.

Sorry for the whining but grey skies and no stats get me down a little. Glad someone understands. That's where I'm coming from anyway. On the upside I am inspired...

Inspiration is good! As for snow, we're in the midst of a blizzard here, and apparently are supposed to end up with 12-16 inches. >_<

The snow has melted here and now we have icy roads, icy ground, and slushy stuff lurking in patches. Blah.

Maria13, things'll look up eventually. Two friends of mine kept looking for employment for months and, when they were in as low a morale as they could get, they BOTH suddenly got employed.

Thanks! I want to work from home, I've been commuting to London for over ten years now and it's a real drag public transport is awful here and expensive.  Years ago I got a Diploma in Translation so now I'm looking to use it.

Winter blues and a bit of a funk...  I realise I'm not the only one.  Best of luck Lynn...  Everyone says it's the dedication that's important.

Aww.  I rarely look at stats, except occasionally go to gawk at how much the current story has gotten compared to my other stuff.  It actually works against me since I get intimidated if I think about it.  Posted Image  The power of denial is grand.

But you have no need to worry about traffic.  I adore your storytelling and it stands on its own.

lol Yeah...I think I get an average of 2-3 reviews, no matter what it is that I write.  And maybe 300 hits every time I publish something on ff.net?  It doesn't really seem to change much except when I posted my letters, and that was Cousland/Alistair and very small updates (600-1k words) so those were popular.  I figure as long as I get two or three reviews, the views are probably the same as always and that's good enough for me.  :P  It's annoying that stats aren't working, but my latest stuff met my quota, so eh.

Oh, I know what you mean. If a story doesn't get much attention then sometimes it's difficult to find the motive to update it (esepcially if it takes a ton of work) but on the other hand if a ridiculous amount of people are reading it and they're really excited then you have to worry that with every chapter people will just decide that it sucks and give up on it. Thanks for the heads up!  As I said, my inspiration is pretty intact and I am looking forward to finishing Dark Ritual in about 10 chapters and starting the follow on...  Totally crazy, I know...:D

I've said it before... and probably will again. Reviews? What are those? LOL. Not that I mind not having reviews, but like others who get little or no reviews I depend on the stats to tell me if anybody is reading :)

Heh I'm having so much fun rewriting the story and doing a new playthrough for Aonghas. I also gave Alistair a makeover. He seriously needed blue eyes. LOL

There's also a temptation to write to the audience rather than write the story as you think it should be.
