Er... you know Aonghas is a Cousland and a Mage but in his harrowing he went from a medium skinned, brown haired, dark emerald eyed Cousland (known as Amell in the tower not cousland) to a pale almost glowing skinned, silky platinum blond haired, glowing light emerald eyed mage. Basically I made up this 'legend' that other mages had had similiar things happen due to their exposure to Lyrium and the fade, and the only thing that is really known about these others is that they were very powerful. Also Aonghas has the ability to heal himself with a glowing aura from within the fade. Also he has a unique connection to the mabari; being able to sink into the consciousness of the mabari. Also I make a bit more of the grey warden's ability to sense each other; especially Aonghas' and Alistair's ability to sense each other. Hmmm, oh yes and er I lost my train of thought but there is something else.

Edit: Aonghas is an arcane mage and a spirit healer

Theron can communicate with wolves and has a different father than the normal dalish. I'm still developing him so who knows what else he is capable of. I should do a new chapter for him soon. It's just that he's harder to write because I am working more on his adjusting to a new lifestyle, and he has to go through so many changes in thought process to achieve the state of mind necessary to be successful.

Of my two story ready wardens, Arwen Surana is absurdly overpowered during her story. She's been through all the DLC. She excels at killing darkspawn. Her special gift/curse is that she also excels at making poor relationship choices. She's a high functioning person with Asperger's and that limits her ability to read other people without limiting her need for emotional connection.

The other one, Aithne Tabris, is good with money, but that's about it. If being frugal and wheeling and dealing were in game skills, she'd have them maxed out. She is the sort who would save your village and rob everyone in it blind at the same time. She's basically what Silk would be if he were an elf and female. Darkspawn may kill her, but no one will successfully rob or cheat her. If she ever became a broodmother, she'd probably pickpocket her minions. Is that a special power?

So. I finally found some music for the scene that I've planned since before Legend of Tayte had any real planning. I really did start a novel-length story for the sole purpose of this one scene, so I decided it needed a theme song. Because I'm not sure how the siege of Denerim is going to turn out even after all my planning, it'll be interesting to see how that scene is going to play out.

But I could tell someone's going to die in the ending after I listened to this. No weaseling out through sex magic.

Heh, Ven is basically an Arcane Warrior without the actual skills - he just hits things very hard with his sword.

Actually, has anybody really thought about dual-wielding? The fact is a fighting style like that would just be impractical to say the least. First of all - you don't just pick it up. You'd have to train primarily with it for it to be of any use. Second, you'd have to be very strong - strong enough to block and strike one-handed. Third, you'd pretty much have to be ambidextrous. Then of course there's the arrow issues.

Elisa has been overcoming those most of her training. I haven't added any definitive numbers, but she started combat training very young and pretty much decided she would dual-wield at some point. None of those stick-thin Bioware women here - she puts Aveline to shame. She also points out during a training session that she goes Attack Attack Attack to compensate for her terrible defense. On the arrow front she hides behind Alistair, but she's training with Leliana to parry arrows.

Of course I've also expanded the role of a random enchanted weapon :P. No longer a middle-of-the-road sword obtained from a sidequest, the Green Blade is Ven's equivalent to a Witcher's silver sword. He's pretty much one-hit-killed werewolves with it.

EDIT: Speaking of music; I've basically been building to one specific scene too. At one point Elisa promises to save Ven from his demon, no matter what. Upon finding the Urn of Sacred Ashes, it fully posesses him. Elisa is forced to fight him, and this will play www.youtube.com/watch. Does it suit?

Sword and dagger dual-wielding is believable. It also has its advantages, such as when you get inside someone's reach with their sword, a dagger is far more maneuverable during in-fighting and you can exploit that quick advantage. (I fence, so I have some familiarity with swordwork.)

Two full-sized sword wielding, though... that would take some work. Honestly, I'm not even sure what advantages (aside from stuff you see in a game) there would be. You certainly couldn't be in close to someone, because you couldn't maneuver. Hmmm.

There is a classical fencing style with rapier and main gauche, but I had the impression that the dagger in the left hand was mostly used for parrying and opportunistic strikes. The warden in my story initially fought rapier/main-gauche because Oriana (who said it was a very stylish way to fight in Antiva) gave him a main-gauche as a gift. I figured Antiva would stand in for Florence for fanfic purposes.  He currently fights with daggers as he has not found a good dragonbone rapier.

I believe there is a Japanese fighting style with two swords, but I'm not aware of that ever being used in the west. I do think dual-wielding generally is overused and overpowered in RPG's. For that matter swords are overrated--they're really not very effective against heavily armored opponents.

I like how in Dragon Age they show Duncan just using the one sword for the majority of the battle and only resorting to the sword and dagger to climb the Ogre. Rawr!

Music. I'm of the opinion that one song isn't enough to do justice to a dragon age playthrough (fic)

Elisa uses a longsword and short sword. She'll only use two full-size ones during her fight with Howe.

Actually, the only character using something beside a sword is an original Warden, Malcolm. He shows up using a mace and shield, then again dual-wielding a mace and axe.

Music Edit: I've got plenty of songs lined up, trust me.

Okay, now the question. What unique things did you people think up for your characters?

Well, I'm not sure I can say that nobody else has ever done this but it's certainly rare. Aunn spent the entire Blight hating the surface, refusing to move on, and then of course there was my semi-AU ending including refusing to do Awakening.

re: Dual fighting, there are indeed two-sword styles in the east. Niten Ichi is the only one I know of, but to my knowledge was never prevalent and it was a long/short sword combo (katana and wakizashi).

re: Names, I've made them up and used name guides, though more for regional purposes than meaning (Italian/Spanish names for Antivans, for instance). Generally I just go for something I like the sound of. I've only picked one OC name in DAO for its meaning. Ever since Harry Potter I've not been a huge fan of picking names that have a meaning behind it. XD (Gee, that guy whose name basically means wolf is a werewolf? Who'd have thunk! (Yes, I know the earlier books were aimed at kiddies :P Still.)). If DA:O's naming conventions weren't based on (mostly) real world names and borrowing from Earth myth, I'd be making them all up. I love inventing names. :)

re: Special abilities. I haven't given any PCs extra skills, tragic/awesome pasts or out-of-the-ordinary appearances...though I have touched on some OCs post-Blight. I have a Dalish elf who's 'Blessed of Andruil' and can change into a hawk or hare at will unless she's being restrained (she's a mage, but not a shapeshifter). And then there's the guy I mentioned on a previous page with the lyrium tattoos, but they are not openly visible most of the time.

Yeah, most of my Wardens are pretty average in terms of human/elven/dwarven ability, if you ignore the whole kick-assness that comes with being the Hero of Ferelden. :P But I think I have an aversion to granting unique super/sparkle-powers...part of me feels like if I do that, it's just so the hero of the story can be even *more* special. 'Normal' people can be awesome too, damnit! XD

I actually avoid this by giving other characters their own badass abilities or making them even more powerful than the protagonist :P (He;s a DN, and the most powerful is the elf mage). But then again, as I said, I like epic stuff, so I necessarily upgrade things in a story to make everything fit without falling into sue-dom.

For instance, the main character can do a lot of crazy things... but he only survived Ostagar because Duncan rescued him (TWICE!) before dying (which was, technically, partly the main character's fault) and he seems to have trouble seeing the ends of a battle because he... suffers odd things, like being mind-raped by the Archdemon to the point where he starts bleeding from his eye sockets... DURING battle. Being a sprit warrior has big drawbacks in my tale (though most are because he's a dwarf, so it's unnatural, and troublesome for him, like how i said he's unreceptive to most healing magic).

I realize this is what Bioware is doing in DA 2 as well. It seems that many characters have some weird perk (Fenris has his lyrium-infused skin, Anders is an abomination, Merril is supposedly a blood mage (or so i heard)). Ah well.

EDIT

In other news, look what I found! The Dragon Age 2 Main Theme (Inon Zur).

*laugh* Well, upgrading all the characters with their own special powers is a different kettle of fish. :) Then you end up with something like the X-Men, where everyone who's a mutant has their own awesome and unique power. Unless you're not a mutant, then you're pretty much unimportant. ;)

I don't know about DA2 yet...abominations and blood mages are not exactly unheard of. Fenris' skin, while it's the first we see of its kind, may not be the only one in existence (Tevinter has plenty of slaves, after all). I'll wait and see what Hawke's uber-deal is, but for computer games it's hardly rare for the main character to be in A class Of His Own. :)

(and yay! music! :D)

Edit: Actually, this topic has made me think of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series, where Xander is like the only *regular* guy with no awesome powers or supernatural abilities. I think he ended up being my favourite character. Sokka from Avatar: The Last Airbender also has a place in my heart. :)

Umm... I thought Xander eventually turned out to be a badass mage in his own right? Although Willow was better. (haven't really watched the series, just a few episodes and what I stumbled upon on the net :P, particularly TV tropes).

And about upgrading the characters, I've also upgraded the antagonists/people-who-mess-with-you (the archdemon and Flemeth in particular) and made sure characters like Piotin Aeducan were badass in their own right (gave him the ability to "reject" magic around him, causing shockwaves/air bursts that blow people away- essentially the maxed out War Cry talent only sort of explained because shouting doesn't really blow people away as far as i know).

Xander never becomes a mage in any of the official series, so I don't know where you got that from. :)

Maybe War Cry is sonic? XD Might have been better if it temporarily stunned or made people 'quake in fear' for a second or two. That's what a kiai yell is supposed to accomplish.

Ah yes, I had my facts wrong about Xander (unsurprisingly). War cry is sonic but I wanted to replicate the knockback ability from the game, so i used that explanation instead. Piotin IS a dwarf so i figured he'd learned to exert some momentary control over his magic resistance or something.

I guess it depends on what you mean by 'close'?  My reenactment group contains both fencers using two blades (we fence 'in the round' though, and with rather different rules than Olympic) and rattan stick-wielding armored fighters who use two "blades."  Most of the rest of us are scared by them, because they're really good.  That might be less a function of the form being effective, though, and more a function that you have to be really, really good to even be halfway competent at it.

As a super-shorty person with a shorter "sword", I always tried that "get too close to them" tactic, and it... often didn't go well for me.  Possibly because I wasn't very good.  But also because that range is really, really close (with slashing weapons) and it's not too hard for them to just back up.  Not sure how the fencers handle it, but I've definitely seen it done.  (All of this is sport fighting, of course.  YMMV for the real thing.)

As with the epee/main gauche, my impression is that, in the two-sword case, one blade parries and one attacks.  It's just that, when you're very good at it, you can do either function with either blade - like how a boxer can guard or punch with either his left or his right.  Sword-and-shield can protect very well against blows coming from one side or the other, but a quick one-two is pretty hard to block.

No. He never develops magical powers of any kind but he is the 'heart' of the group, the loving giving one, be it in the form of deep friendship or actual love. So he is the only one who can pursuade Willow not to end the world when her lover Tara is killed, for example.

I took away everyone's pseudo-magic skills.  I like stuff to make sense, and most of those abilities don't make sense to me, so I made it so only mages get magic.  And frostrocks and such probably exist, but they're enchanted and cost their weight in gold.  And no healing potions.  :P

My mage ends up being very powerful but he can't really do anything that mages can't do in game, except light spells and a hybrid spell that I'm sure exists in Thedas, just not in game.  He doesn't really have any extra quirks.  He's just an elf kid with an inferiority complex.  And a really smart dog.  :wizard:

You make my smut!fic characters very sad, Creature.  :crying:

ETA: I have seriously used fire crystals as Bics.  In my head, I justify it as an extremely exothermic but limited oxidation process.  You chip off a piece of crystal, and the new cleavage glows red-hot as the oxide forms on the surface.  While it's doing that, you can use it to light a wick or tinder.  (I've just seen people try to light fires with a flint and steel.  Not something I'd want to have to do under anything other than ideal conditions...)

I want to keep the Rod of Fire from the Magi Origin for use later on. Specifically unlocking chests, pesky doors, lighting my pipe, and lighting genlocks on fire.

My epic song involves the Deep Roads and the Battle for Denerim. The songs' chorus ends with "How many of them can we make die!?" and that question is one that Alistair and Glor will typically fire back and forth (Ritual Dismemberment Day became a competition in which the loser of those participating has to do some of the more menial chores around the campsite, buy the ale if they're near a town or inn, and generally gets mocked) along with a nod to the "Hey Legolas, 2 already!!" Scene from LotR. "Only 2? I'm on 19 *Glor watches with glee as across the mountain face a Blizzard sweeps an incoming Darkspawn patrol of reinforcements off their feet and over the cliff*"

Also, I plan on having witty (read hopefully witty) dialogue before and sometimes during combat. When that one hurlock slashes the throat of the soldier just before your army charges at the Battle of denerim, I already can see my mage pulling out his Sword and staff and muttering "You're mine, b!tch" before charging into the fray >.> <.<

Glorfindel approves (+12)

So I was listening to Dragonforce last night and I kind of had an idea for a long as hell one-shot story with inspiration from the song Valley of the Damned. Basically, it centers around the Grey Wardens of ages past fighting in one of the Blights in a valley near Weisshaupt that the darkspawn and Archdemon are marching through. Cue some of the Wardens riding out of the clouds on their griffons to engage the Archdemon while Wardens on foot with a great host of allied nations behind them march into the valley to fight the darkspawn.

I totally forgot about the rod of fire... but i suppose the mage wouldn't have been allowed to keep it when leaving the tower.

Meh, Alim has a wand anyway. Doesn't need anything else (until he becomes an arcane warrior and gets a blade-staff like Hawke :D)
