During one of the times they Mages are allowed outside to get some fresh air and sunlight, he makes a break for it

Didn't Finn say they cancelled those after Anders' first escape attempt during that time? I guess it could have only been temporarily cancelled, though, with Anders never being allowed to partake in it again.

One of the choices in conversation with Duncan is that the mages are allowed to walk the grounds.

I dont think that Irving would just roll over and allow the Templars to take away the right for *all* mages to go outside based on ones' actions. And Greagoir doesnt seem that unreasonable.

We're talking a good seven years later or around seven years anyways. Anders and Finn are older than the warden and Jowan.

And one choice with the door guard has you asking what the outside is like.

Maybe they mean outside as in off the island (the 'greater outside').

Surely the tower has windows *somewhere*...

And at the bottom of that window is a darkened pit. Apprentices tell each other that it's filled with the bones of Mages who tried to escape out that window and fell onto the sharpened stakes......

(Yes, there will be apprentice scaring in my story... muhahahaha I can't wait to save Conner)

Hey, there can be high-up windows too! All set for a knotted-bedsheet escape adventure! :D

*grin* But windows don't have to be large enough for a person to crawl through...it was built by the Avvar, apparently, so there could have been archery niches. I suppose these could have all been sealed up before it became a Circle Tower, but with all the alchemy and hot air blown about in there you'd think it has to have *some* ventilation.

Although if Anders knew how to swim across the damn lake without drowning, they must have an indoor/rooftop pool somewhere...

You can ask the guard about leaving he says only mages on official business can leave and the door is the only way out other than jumping from windows on the higher floors. The templar when asked what is out there says Ferelden. I'm sure when apprentices go outside that it is approved by Irving and of course they would have to stay on the island. The guard clearly says that Irving has not informed him of anybody leaving. Now you also have the option of telling Duncan apprentices aren't allowed out. I think the developers wanted to give you the choice so you could play it how you want. There are other instances in the game like that too. Where you can choose to say opposite things based on how you want to play the game. Choices. Yay!

The guard jokes about the results of jumping haha

But ander's joined the tower older as an adolescent he could have learned to swim before hand :)

And maybe the mages get swimming lessons haha. "Hey come back here! I swear there's a troublemaker in every bunch."

So this solves the fact there ARE windows! Or the Templar is just being a comedian. ;)

Edit re: Anders - I suppose that's true. :)

He says there are windows in the upper floors and then jokes about the result of jumping out of them hehe

Pfft, probably the templar quarters have windows. Those ...! Yikes I slipped into thinking I was a mage in Ferelden. Seperating myself now, or trying to anyways.

Edit: Only knows because she just replayed it :P

What Logic. No way! heh, that aside have you seen the height of those ceilings? I wonder if one climbed a book shelf if they could find some type of vent to escape from. Heh probably not but I bet they have an airing out every now and then. Okay all doors open now! The tower becomes a wind tunnel. ooohhhh I know let's use magic to fix the air issue. hahahah *winks*

Totally reminds me of how Belgarion and party go to that sorcery school (whatever it was) and how that dude practically blew himself up and how they talked about dealing with smells caused by accidents and all. LOL

Edit: dangit now I wanna read those books!

In Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels I think the Alchemists Guild has a really light roof so that if it gets blown off it causes less damage on the way down (and is easily replaced XD)

Sounds better than the mage's guild that featured the Iron Mage competition in Order of the Stick: On the Origin of PCs.

V lost the competition for being the only person to ever destroy the stadium.

You know, I understand *why* the Chantry decided that keeping the Mages away from the general populace was a "good" decision, but at the same time, I sometimes get the feeling they didnt really plan it out well. If the mages rebel, they have a fortified position from which to cast on any army advancing on them not to mention that Templars need to be in range to cast a Smite. They have to come over IN BOATS for Andrastes' sake, all it would take is one good Tempest to electrify the water and then start throwing fireballs and infernos. They fall into the water, they get zapped and sink. The end!

The Circle of Ferelden being housed in a tower seems to be based on three major points:
-- Mages aren't willing to oppose the Chantry either for religious or practical reasons.
-- Templars are sufficient to "solve" any uprising.
-- The tower's seclusion from the world (broken bridge) will keep the mages in one place.

I think the first two are going to be rethinked after Broken Circle...

I've got some mage-related questions too.

1) So from certain information we've established with reasonable certainty that demons and spirits are essentially the same thing, the former a corruption of the latter. So, any ideas what sort of benevolent spirits would spawn the kind of demons we see in the game? I ask because, as I said before, my fic contains an evil spirit (thought up before Anders was revealed :P), and I'm wondering what could turn into a Desire demon.

2) What are the relative power-levels of demons? The codex says first that, in order of power, it's rage, hunger, sloth, desire and pride. It also says that Pride demons are strong enough to threaten the world. Right. Except the Pride demon we kill is rather weak, despite it's ability to make abominations. The Desire demon receives a small downgrade - zombies rather than abominations - but it's roughly the same power level. The Sloth demon also about on-par, but it manages to pull four people into the Fade at once, an ability that is never mentioned again. Even a Rage demon, the weakest, has a sidequest to itself wherein it poses a major threat to the party. So... why the lack of power difference? I ask because the demon inside Ven is supposed to be a 'particularly powerful' demon - Connor's one being a former servant. I held off making it a Pride demon because that would have strained believability too far, but I wonder if the shenanigans she pulls are realistic for a demon of her calibre.

3) How strong are blood mages supposed to be? In-story they're hyped to be life-crushing badasses able to turn you into a raving lunatic by looking at you. In gameplay they're just mages - they don't even use their own (admittedly awesome) abilities! I ask because Ven used Blood Control on Zathrian and almost forced him to kill himself. Also in an upcoming chapter he kills a darkspawn Scar-style by blowing its brains out its eyesockets.

... I am a sick person ;|

There are a couple things wrong with those points

A) The Fraternities are not a secret. The Chantry has to know that they exist. The Libertarians are one of the largest and fastest growing one in the community of mages. The Loyalists are losing numbers and its' speculated that the Aquetarians might start supporting the Libertarians more instead of serving as the mediator between the two extremes. Mages are thus willing to oppose the chantry.

B) Templars are a military order that is dominated by two principles. 1) If it looks abominationy or bleeding, cut off its head. 2) Lyrium is the bomb-diggity. Mages are far more versatile than Templars, especially if one considers the reliance on lyrium *and* the fact that if the mages go Abomination or Maleficar, there is nothing in the Templar training that effectively stops them beyond what Alistair called "Plan B"

and finally C) We find Mages all over Ferelden. I fought more Rogue Mages than I ever saw in the Tower during the Origin or Broken Circle. Clearly the corral idea has not panned out.
