As I posted on your thread, part of it is probably that this is an unpopular character. There isn't a lot of built-in audience.jamesp81 wrote...
Not a good signI usually get at least a couple of commenters here and there, but not this time. Subject matter might've been too heavy, I don't know.
Not much consolation re your "baby," but sometimes it's just down to statistics. I imagine it's a lot like that with commercial publishing successes, too- some of the bestselling prose out there I find to be utter crap, but the author obviously hit an iron where and when it was hot.
It helps to promote yourself a little, too- unfortunately, here again, the "Velanna fan community" is probably pretty small.
I know exactly what you mean. The real reason I write? Two of them: sometimes an idea strikes and I just like to put it down on paper. But beyond that, what I do for my day job is completely worthless and has no meaning.

Looking for a beta for my MotA yarn... Haven't finished it yet but made a start.
Beta? As in beta reader? What's involved in such a task? (or am I making noobie assumptions here?)

@tkl a beta is the personification of your inner critic... But nicer, hopefully.

Ummm... how does one arrange to become asubbeta? That sounds right up my alley, as I'm a better writing technician than a creative writer.(no, i don't feel dirty at all)
On the FanFiction site - there is a section on your left hand nav bar that says Beta Reader - thats your profile and set up area. I dont know much more than that because I would be hopeless at it.

FWIW, my reformatting trick: I don't use RTF, I hand-write in HTML tags. Then, when I'm ready to post to BSN, I "find-replace" the pointy brackets with square ones in my word processor. I open the BSN editor, hit the BBCode button to turn off RTF, paste in, and hit the BBCode button again. Et voila, relatively low-hassle reformat complete.

Updating your own thread could include changing the subject line to include *UPDATED! <date>* so people know when a new story is there, something most of us do with serial chapter updates.
I won't say no to adding every new fic to the Master List, though formatting in BSN is a bit broken so there may be a wait >.< One thing I don't do on the List is update when there are new chapters...it's new fics only, or when an existing one is completed.

I like to keep the first post as an index. When I have things to add, I go and edit the top post *first*, inserting new links and changing the post title to reflect the current date.
This does *not* move your thread, and it will still show as "Last updated a week ago" (or whatever).
I generally use the quote button on the first post to copy the whole thing into the editor, cut away everything that isn't updates, and post it. *That* moves the index up the page again, and also gives readers a handy place to go to look for new things to read (as opposed to having to skim the entire page one index looking for things marked NEW).

@tklivory betas are really helpful. I have one who is an editor in real life and she corrects my grammar (and teaches me too, so I hopefully do better). And several that do grammar and story content. And some just content. They make sure things are logical and make sense. Question me when it isn't and help me come up with ideas. They are also some of my best friends. They call me on my stuff, it's good to have.
I post here and on FF.net. Though I can't remember hubby's password (and he can't remember either) and I can't edit the title post to let everyone know that the newest Chapter 31 for one of my fics is out. *sigh* I stole the account from hubby back in the day before he bought me my own DAO. Now I have to edit under his account and post under me. It's very confusing. ROFL!
