Having been raised on a rich diet of fighting games and fantasy, I don't find the combat too taxing, It's really easy for me to visualize fights and translate those onto paper. My emotional cortex, however, is like watching paint dry. I can paint the canvas in my mind and i'll scrutinize it for hours (in my most recent case, weeks) and not like it, eventually scrapping it and trying to rebuild it from scratch.

Ah, it's fun :D

One small thing about ff.net: My most read story has no reviews at all. And by most read, I mean head and shoulders above all the rest.

Not a good sign :( I usually get at least a couple of commenters here and there, but not this time. Subject matter might've been too heavy, I don't know.

As I posted on your thread, part of it is probably that this is an unpopular character.  There isn't a lot of built-in audience.

Not much consolation re your "baby," but sometimes it's just down to statistics.  I imagine it's a lot like that with commercial publishing successes, too- some of the bestselling prose out there I find to be utter crap, but the author obviously hit an iron where and when it was hot.

It helps to promote yourself a little, too- unfortunately, here again, the "Velanna fan community" is probably pretty small.  Image IPB

The real reason I write?  Two of them: sometimes an idea strikes and I just like to put it down on paper.  But beyond that, what I do for my day job is completely worthless and has no meaning.

I know exactly what you mean.

Well, if we're talking about strengths and weaknesses, I can apparently write angst and UST (unresolved sexual tension) like no body's business, and according to the reviews it's why I get repeat readers. But other than snarky comments, my humor falls flatter than a flour tortilla. I will never be a comedienne. LOL

Beta?  As in beta reader?  What's involved in such a task?  (or am I making noobie assumptions here?)

To all of the above... Thanks guys! Addai offered and was incredibly helpful...

@tkl a beta is the personification of your inner critic... But nicer, hopefully.

A Beta reads your stuff, corrects grammar (if needed) and hopefully points out where you got lazy. :)

Ummm... how does one arrange to become a subbeta?  That sounds right up my alley, as I'm a better writing technician than a creative writer.
(no, i don't feel dirty at all)

My beta reader is helping me learn lots simply by the corrections he/she makes - I am so grateful for their help.

I knew I wrote like a 6th grader but didnt know in what way... every time I get back my corrections I get a little more clued in on how to write something in a better way.

On the FanFiction site - there is a section on your left hand nav bar that says Beta Reader - thats your profile and set up area.  I dont know much more than that because I would be hopeless at it.

So, I've noticed that people post new stuff in the list o' fanfiction that SoLD maintains, and sometimes also post their own thread that they update personally.  Is there a preferred method of shamelessly promoting your stuff announcing your new work, or do most people do both, or what?

(apologies if this is the wrong thread to ask this question in...)

I did both because I like to read stuff on BSN if it's posted here, so I figured I'd provide the same for other people. It's just a bit of hassle because you have to reformat.

I list my "big stuff" in SoLD's thread (which for me is something like ~20K or more words; I know that's a chapter for some folks) and keep my "small stuff" in my own fanfic thread. Because I have a lot of it. >.>

FWIW, my reformatting trick: I don't use RTF, I hand-write in HTML tags. Then, when I'm ready to post to BSN, I "find-replace" the pointy brackets with square ones in my word processor. I open the BSN editor, hit the BBCode button to turn off RTF, paste in, and hit the BBCode button again. Et voila, relatively low-hassle reformat complete.

Even I don't list all my stuff on that list XD I have a number of short fics, though not as many as Corker. :) I do really like her idea of a personal fic thread...one I've considered for myself but never got around to.

Updating your own thread could include changing the subject line to include *UPDATED! <date>* so people know when a new story is there, something most of us do with serial chapter updates.

I won't say no to adding every new fic to the Master List, though formatting in BSN is a bit broken so there may be a wait >.< One thing I don't do on the List is update when there are new chapters...it's new fics only, or when an existing one is completed.

Oh, a hint for updating a personal fic thread:

I like to keep the first post as an index. When I have things to add, I go and edit the top post *first*, inserting new links and changing the post title to reflect the current date.

This does *not* move your thread, and it will still show as "Last updated a week ago" (or whatever).

I generally use the quote button on the first post to copy the whole thing into the editor, cut away everything that isn't updates, and post it. *That* moves the index up the page again, and also gives readers a handy place to go to look for new things to read (as opposed to having to skim the entire page one index looking for things marked NEW).

I only had a personal fic thread while The Rescue was being written. Now that I've started on my DA2 fic, I'm wondering where to post the story alerts to that or just hope y'all stumble on it from ff.net. LOL

I put the short stuff on Deviantart.

Hi everybody! *Waves* wow,I've been missing out on great convos. Stupid Real life crap *kicks Real Life in the goolies*

@tklivory betas are really helpful. I have one who is an editor in real life and she corrects my grammar (and teaches me too, so I hopefully do better). And several that do grammar and story content. And some just content. They make sure things are logical and make sense. Question me when it isn't and help me come up with ideas. They are also some of my best friends. They call me on my stuff, it's good to have.

I post here and on FF.net. Though I can't remember hubby's password (and he can't remember either) and I can't edit the title post to let everyone know that the newest Chapter 31 for one of my fics is out. *sigh* I stole the account from hubby back in the day before he bought me my own DAO. Now I have to edit under his account and post under me. It's very confusing. ROFL!

Well, I took the plunge and posted the first chapter of the DA2 novelization.
