My issue is supposed professionals dissing hobbyists and amateurs, no matter how they choose to "play" in their craft.

@ Sialater - yeah, I see your point. Happens in music, too. Just because someone is recorded and paid for it makes them better... How? I've met hobbyists that could play (or write) your socks off. Being published takes hard work, yes, but it also involves making connections and luck. It is sad when pros imply or say outright that kind of 'published=better' fallacy.

So... I was going to take a long break from writing fanfiction, but I had this dream... it was all about this assassin (I'm not naming any names but he wasn't Zevran or one of my characters) sneaking into my house and stealing my unfinished stories and publishing, the stuff I prewrote, way ahead of its time on fanfiction. So it ended in this huge fight over who should get the chocolate my fanfiction stories won for being completed; although, they weren't finished but missing huge sections. WTH kinda dream is that anyways? Maybe I should get right back to writing and quickly! LMAO!

Psst...

Did you know that you inspired me to do this story because of your discussion of another-assassin-not-Zevran in the November post thread?  So thanks!  It was fun!

Also, if an assassin tells you to do something, then I think you should probably do it! Image IPB

Wait, you get chocolate?  I WANT! Image IPB

I saw that tkli :) Glad my gushing gave you ideas :)

You have to be careful in this thread if you have chocolate because there are lotsa thieves in here. I'm building a fort around my chocolate and then I'm gonna make a moat. You know it's really funny but I think playing Oblivion is inspiring me to write more fanfiction for Dragon Age, just like AC inspires me in the same way. It's almost like playing different video games just adds to the overall thought (creative) process for fanfiction. :) I'm definately leaning heavily toward the whole "assassin/thief" angle in my fanfiction. I have no desire to write a fanfiction for Ezio because let's be honest he's just too awesome to mess with, but I could make my fanfiction assassins more awesome. Not many tall buildings to climb in Ferelden and the tower looks downright scary but hey you never know! LOL! Oh! and let us not forget about Dante and Nero, lose the guns and their styles would make some seriously cool stories; again though, they are too awesome for me to fiddle with. :)

I will find a way through your defenses... The chocolate will be mine!

Oh, I totally agree. I think I can't write for Ezio because he already has such a detailed backstory, and well, why change perfection? XD Same thing with Geralt from the Witcher (personally). But for AFGNCAAP (Ageless, Faceless, Gender Neutral Caulturally Ambiguous Adventure Person) or games where you can design your own character (mostly) FF is much easier to write, and definitely inspiring. (It's why I'm here, after all) :)

Although I wouldn't put an assassin in Fereldan into a white outfit... just sayin'...

I think there are some pc mods for that and I know there are some for the Witcher outfits. *smirks*

Okay. I did it. I have joined the mainstream and gotten a Fanfiction.net account.

Most of my stuff I have in Google docs with format tags - I don't use the RTF to do italics, I use HTML <i> tags (because I am old and resist changing to <em> or whatever the new standard is).

I see that ff.net accepts html files as uploads. Should I copy these documents to a text editor, save as HTML, then upload? Or is there a simpler way to do this that won't end up with my format tags displayed as plain text?

@ Sialater - If I gave you an idea, let me know when I can read it, because I like where this is going...

@ Corker - Woot! *Welcome to the dark side, my friend...* What's your account name?

I've never uploaded as HTML. I usually use an ASCII editor and add italics manually or just upload from doc. What's the current extension of your file? Is it .htm, or does Google docs have a proprietary format? (i don't use google docs, so I'm not sure) If you have Word, you could try converting it into a Word doc...

Hmm, a conundrum to ponder...

I'm pretty sure if I upload as a .doc format, it'll display <i>italics like this</i> instead of italics like this. I can monkey around with it and find out, I guess.

I went with SoLD's suggested tweak to my forum name: Corkerite! Like kryptonite, only squishier and sort of beige.

Yeah, if it's already in .doc format with the html tags in, it would upload with the tags not the effect of the tags. If it started in .htm/.html format, though, you should be able to convert to .doc format using 'Save As', and it should change the tags into the actual desired effect.

But in the end, experimentation will truly tell. You could just get a small section from one piece and experiment uploading it until you figure out the sweet spot.

Ahhhhhh, more lore to mess with our fanfiction (Asunder!). Fortunately, I tend to not get too specific or I make up things to suit myself.

Quick lore question: Is Ser Bryant (knight commander in Lothering) dead?

Don't think his fate was explored. Witch Hunt says templars and even bandits fought together to give refugees a last chance to run. He may or may not have managed to escape.

I think the problem with fanfiction comes from the lack of good quality reviewers; I'm not just talking about spelling and grammar, but how the characters behave. There are so many fanfics with near perfect spelling and grammar, however the plot is sub-par and the main character is this eighteen to twenty-something bombshell who is absolutly flawless in every way, she runs around in a plate bikini or a dress that covers a minimal amount of skin (even if the setting of th story is some frozen hell), and the entire world revolves around her. I check the reviews of these stories all I see is praise.

Except...even published novels can fall into that category. You're practically describing the entire (cheap) romance genre, with the flawless heroine beloved and covetted by all waiting for the hero to sweep her into his manly arms and give her a purpose for existing.

Those authors make a lot of money. :P

My argument here is why should fanfics or their writers suck for producing that kind of stuff when other people are getting paid for it?

Someone, help me not to have to slog through a dozen YouTube videos...

Do we know how far Vigil's Keep is from the city of Amaranthine? I'm not going to fuss over it too much, but I'd hate to make up a travel time only to learn later that somebody tells you that if you leave Amaranthine now, you can make it to the Vigil by nightfall or somesuch.

Amaranthine, as I understand it, is an Arling... so it would take considerably less to go from Vigil's keep to the city than it would for, say, traveling from Lothering to Denerim.

Going by the events in the climax of Awakening, the Darkspawn messengar that comes to tell you about the Mother attacking the keep makes it to the town pretty fast. Also, you can get back to the keep in time to regroup, close all the gates and put men and women at their posts....

I think half a day or so of marching, or a few hours ride (one or two while galloping), would fit. Arl Howe must have been stationed at least reasonably close to the city, right?

Besides, it would be impossible for Vigil's keep to become a trade hub and steal Amaranthine's business if it weren't close by.

IIRC it's never officially said. What Raonar says makes sense though. The Vigil being Howe's keep and Amaranthine his chief city, it'd likely be similar to arlings like Redcliffe with the keep moderately close to the township. However, in Amaranthine's case, not so close by that the Warden can defend both at once when the darkspawn attack (yet apparently still close enough that they can race back to the Vigil to defend it? Distances over time are completely fubared in DA. Most Bioware games, really ;)).

in the Baldur's gate games, it seemed possible to go from one edge of Amn to another in two-three days at most, with a party of six. Even if you factor in priests with restoration spells and the like, it's a short time.

Iit looks like the general idea is that it doesn't take long to go from one area to another in Bioware titles.

Which makes me wonder if me saying it takes about a week to go from Orzammar to Denerim is too long... huh.

Considering an NPC can get from Denerim to Ostagar in less than a day (or so they claim) and another takes two weeks to get from Orzammar to the Circle Tower, I think everything in a BioWare game moves "at the speed of the plot", as I saw someone put it once.

Basically, whatever works for the story becomes true...
