so, scant reviews means that the piece can still be good, right? Right. *sobs quietly*

That is definitely what I tell myself.

Who else does the "this person has more reviews then me, WHY?" Game? Because I do.

I do that ALL the time.  I think it's just natural.

I like to console myself I'm writing for a specific audience And I Should Be Okay With That. It worrrrks. Sometimes.

You do have to keep that in mind.  Like with 'Summer Sword'?  I know it will never have as many reviews as 'Duty' because it's a story about Loghain & Cauthrien.  It's a niche piece.  And in a way, yours is too.  There are a lot of people out there that have no interest in dwarf origins (yes, I know...scream your racist comments :P).

Of course, none of this logic brings comfort...

Sorry, I gave that up a long time ago.  It's an insane and unending game for me.  I'm lucky if I get a chapter finished at this point...which I did, so the universe can be kind from time to time.

I'm all about small victories.

I'm with Ette, just finishing a chapter is a victory.  Not that I don't like reviews, but I'm writing for my own satisfaction.  It makes me feel great when someone appreciates my writing (and sometimes even makes me write faster), but I would write even without them.

Pfft, of course. Pieces can be beautiful and can only get one or two reviews. Naturally, stories that have many chapters and are always being bumped to the front page will have more reviews than one shots. Many chaptered stories that fill "niche" tastes will have less reviews than many chaptered stories that revolve around conventional pairings. (The Loghain corner of ff.net sat alone for a very long time, lost in the long shadow that was Alistair/Cousland, but that has changed. -grins-) It is also the case that if you write for the popular conventional pairing, you run the risk of being lost in the shuffle: especially for those one shots. So you're in a tight spot depending on your circumstance.

Feel strong and satisfied in what YOU write, because you are hopefully writing the story that you want to tell. Having everyone share in the joy of the unfolding storyline is just a bonus.

Also, there's more to the system than just reviews! Even though no one but you (the author) knows about them, favorite alerts, author alerts, story alerts are all nice ways of knowing that someone out there is -desperately- waiting for you to update...and that is always comforting. :o

I do it, but it doesn't really discourage me.  What I'm writing likely has a very small audience, and I'm not writing for approval or recognition--that's just delicious icing on the tasty cake.  It is... frustrating, though.  And makes me twitch a little sometimes.

OH I am with you on that icey, I do love the alerts too. And every day I get at least one for my epic that is months old now. It always surprises me and gives me a little satisfied glow.

I just wish the damn stats bar would get fixed.

@ Soignee, Tasmen, MirelieA, Miri1984, odiedragon, Tanith Ayres, EtteStarz, Maria13 you all rock the house. I enjoy all of your writing so very much. And you are all my heros. You, and I am looking at everyone one of you, got me to start writing again. It is all because of you. I have been a lurker and fan for a good while. I finally got over my case of the shy, to write and say so.

Oh and I don't mind dwarf romance with Ali, far from it! No hang ups for me in that department. I love soignee's story. And aimo's artwork with her spit fire lady.

The idea occurs to me that in this time of strife, we could always pair up and review the latest chapter of our partner, say in a five sentence paragraph, here or on FF.net with emphasis on the positive...

Oh do you? Oh, saucy! Sorry, channeling Ali. :D

Um really I have an epic which I am happy to read reviews for early chapters.. but I do have shorter ones and those might be easier.  I don't want anyone to feel put out trying to read my huge story.

I can read Maria13's : D.  I get to beta for Tanith.  Or Ette, or..... LOL.  I can't help it.  To quote Drew Barrymore's character in the movie "Everafter,"  "I can no sooner choose a favorite star in the heavens!"
