Ugh I hate people (like my mother-in law) who think there is only one way to do things. You see movies, as does Soigee. I do both. I see movies in my head and I sometimes hear the characters talking. I could "hear" Nan and Loghain saying the dialogue I wrote for them, as I wrote it. Maybe that makes me very strange. *shrugs*

Well, then I'm strange too, I dream dialogue.
I read something about James Joyce once, he told a friend he was having trouble with a paragraph, and the friends was like "So you don't know what to say?" and Joyce said: "Not exactly, I have all the words I just don't know what order to put them in..."<3

To be perfectly honest with you, that is how it works for me as well. I picture things out in my head and then write. Sometimes I'll have a character speak to me in my head with a particular bit of dialogue, but most of the time? Let the mind screen roll!

Same here, I never have conversations with my characters. They are real to themselves, I am not.
I've channeled a character on occasion... one in particular from an original work. So if that's what you mean by "speak to me", then I suppose they do, sometimes.

And as I said, working within an established frame work (characters, setting etc) gives you an opportunity to work on the other skills necessary in writing. Plot development - description and imagery. I've always found those things are difficult for me, so fanfiction is a great way to practice.
It also helps character development, actually. Having to actively think all the time "No, this is an established character, he/she wouldn't do that" has made me realise that I can't just sit down and write someone without motivations.

I'm curious about the appeal of Fan Fiction (not trying to be insulting or judgmental, I just don't understand it). To me, as a writer, I don't feel comfortable writing about other peoples creations. I write about my characters in my setting. And as a reader, I don't feel a desire to read stories that aren't canon.
With most games i get that same feeling but dragon age is..well...differant, most of my fanfics take place in a universe that assumes my human nobles origin story was canon, and i create new characters and stories that are entertaining but dont mess with the main story. I think the fact dragon age has no set canon for the players actions makes it easier to write fanfic, star wars not so much lol

And Miri and Westie said it better than me.
I don't know. Something about Dragon Age has my juices flowing. I came up with an original idea that is mine, based on their world. Have you ever read Star Wars books, or comics based on it? Those are fanfic. Or some other TV show like Buffy? Or Star Trek? Graphic novels based on same? If not then you really don't read fanfic. And there is nothing wrong with that. I'm just curious. Because if you read any of those kinds of books or graphic novels its fanfic.
I think a lot of people think they aren't into fanfic, and really are. They just don't think of it as such when they get to buy it in the bookstore on Amazon and it comes with a nice glossy cover.
Personally, I am a published author if you will. Something that was mine. And no, don't think I am getting all "oh look at me I'm so special the Fade shines out of my bum," I make reference to it only in that I too can write my own dreck. I played Dragon Age, and it was like playing a favorite book. I loved it. And I didn't think anything of it at the time. Then I woke up with this story that was based on their world, but was my own, and it wouldn't let me go. I had to write it. So, I am. The muse wants, what it wants. So I am it's slave.
I understand not having an interest in reading or writing fanfic and good on ya mate for writing your own in your own world. I think that is fantastic. But if I may say so, you are missing out on some fantastic writing by some spectacular authors just because it is labeled fanfic and may not be "canon"(whatever the hell that is supposed to mean, sorry but really, what is that supposed to mean?).
I myself, believe in being open to the muse, and possibilities. And I am totally addicted to the written word. So I cannot turn away from stories no matter they are. I prefer to start reading and make up my mind if I want to continue or not. Whether they are "original stories" from an "original settings" or are not "canon," ( again that word is giving me the laughs, must be tired. What a stuck up, prissy little word) makes no never mind to me. Again, so many creative wonderful people. I would say if you are going to limit yourself so severely, it sucks to be you, mate, because the is some great stuff on this forum. I already listed two authors worht reading.
