Ugh I hate people (like my mother-in law) who think there is only one way to do things. You see movies, as does Soigee. I do both. I see movies in my head and I sometimes hear the characters talking. I could "hear" Nan and Loghain saying the dialogue I wrote for them, as I wrote it. Maybe that makes me very strange. *shrugs*

Soignee, you are anything but boring love. You either odie!

westie, that convo with the characters was hilarious, almost spit out my coffe! You crack me up!

Sometimes I write in what I hear IRL, but with slight twists to fit it to the character I think would say it. For instance at 4 AM, after LARP, we'll be at IHOP and someone will start debating whether or not you can be "Fairly certain" about something... :}

LOL, I loved the "fairly certain" conversation between Jean and Ives. That sounds perfect for a 4 AM IHOP conversation.

Well, then I'm strange too, I dream dialogue.

I read something about James Joyce once, he told a friend he was having trouble with a paragraph, and the friends was like "So you don't know what to say?" and Joyce said: "Not exactly, I have all the words I just don't know what order to put them in..."<3

To be perfectly honest with you, that is how it works for me as well.  I picture things out in my head and then write.  Sometimes I'll have a character speak to me in my head with a particular bit of dialogue, but most of the time?  Let the mind screen roll!

Same here, I never have conversations with my characters. They are real to themselves, I am not.

I've channeled a character on occasion... one in particular from an original work.  So if that's what you mean by "speak to me", then I suppose they do, sometimes.

I don't think the characters talk to me as such, but sometimes I think I'm channeling them. I'm a "sit down at the keyboard" writer. I sit in front of the computer and wait for things to come out of my fingers (sounds a bit weird, I know). Sometimes I'm three quarters of the way through a conversation and it feels like I have no control whatsoever over what my characters are saying. I do a LOT of conversation cutting when I write - if my fingers had their way, the chapters would be 6000 words long and ALL in quotation marks. They like to talk, my characters :).

I'm curious about the appeal of Fan Fiction (not trying to be insulting or judgmental, I just don't understand it). To me, as a writer, I don't feel comfortable writing about other peoples creations. I write about my characters in my setting. And as a reader, I don't feel a desire to read stories that aren't canon.

Rhys, I think it's about being able to work within established bounds. I write my own fiction as well, but fanfiction is like... well it's like having an active fantasy life I suppose. You can take characters places YOU want them to go rather than having to let the story lie. I think in games it's especially good, because of the nature of games you can't ever get as much of the story as you might like - the mechanics just aren't there. Bioware goes a bit further than most, but I personally was so sucked into the world that I wasn't satisfied when it ended.

And as I said, working within an established frame work (characters, setting etc) gives you an opportunity to work on the other skills necessary in writing. Plot development - description and imagery. I've always found those things are difficult for me, so fanfiction is a great way to practice.

It also helps character development, actually. Having to actively think all the time "No, this is an established character, he/she wouldn't do that" has made me realise that I can't just sit down and write someone without motivations.

With most games i get that same feeling but dragon age is..well...differant, most of my fanfics take place in a universe that assumes my human nobles origin story was canon, and i create new characters and stories that are entertaining but dont mess with the main story. I think the fact dragon age has no set canon for the players actions makes it easier to write fanfic, star wars not so much lol

Oh and Rhys, I am up way later than I should be, do not take my words as having any tone whatsoever except maybe sleepy! ROFL! -_-

And Miri and Westie said it better than me. :happy:  And Miri is right, it helps to be able to work on other aspects in such structure.  And Westie's Chevalier story is well worth reading, as is Miri's "Caged" (among many many others;)).

I don't know. Something about Dragon Age has my juices flowing. I came up with an original idea that is mine, based on their world. Have you ever read Star Wars books, or comics based on it? Those are fanfic. Or some other TV show like Buffy? Or Star Trek? Graphic novels based on same? If not then you really don't read fanfic. And there is nothing wrong with that. I'm just curious. Because if you read any of those kinds of books or graphic novels its fanfic.

I think a lot of people think they aren't into fanfic, and really are. They just don't think of it as such when they get to buy it in the bookstore on Amazon and it comes with a nice glossy cover.

Personally, I am a published author if you will. Something that was mine. And no, don't think I am getting all "oh look at me I'm so special the Fade shines out of my bum," I make reference to it only in that I too can write my own dreck. I played Dragon Age, and it was like playing a favorite book. I loved it. And I didn't think anything of it at the time. Then I woke up with this story that was based on their world, but was my own, and it wouldn't let me go. I had to write it. So, I am. The muse wants, what it wants. So I am it's slave.

I understand not having an interest in reading or writing fanfic and good on ya mate for writing your own in your own world. I think that is fantastic. But if I may say so, you are missing out on some fantastic writing by some spectacular authors just because it is labeled fanfic and may not be "canon"(whatever the hell that is supposed to mean, sorry but really, what is that supposed to mean?).

I myself, believe in being open to the muse, and possibilities. And I am totally addicted to the written word. So I cannot turn away from stories no matter they are. I prefer to start reading and make up my mind if I want to continue or not. Whether they are "original stories" from an "original settings" or are not "canon," ( again that word is giving me the laughs, must be tired. What a stuck up, prissy little word) makes no never mind to me. Again, so many creative wonderful people. I would say if you are going to limit yourself so severely, it sucks to be you, mate, because the is some great stuff on this forum.  I already listed two authors worht reading. :D  Shadow of Light Dragon, odie, Tasmen, Tellervo, Slim Warden, Maria13, Tanith Ayres on this forum.  And I havent even gotten to FF.  But what can I say?  I am not writing for anyone else, I am writing for my muse that has me so wrapped around its little finger, I can't budge (even if I wanted to, and I don't)   And there is Gil's/Erynnar's two cents, which is really worth some navel lint and a wad of string.
