you're the first person to say to me you stuggle with Butcher--- his books are like crack and are sped read by me and everyone I've pimped them at.

I'm an exceptionally fast reader, so my friends tell me.  My partner is exceptionally slow (he is pushing through Red Seas Under Red Skies at about 10 pages/hr).  Butcher and Lukyanenko he devours with fiendish glee.  Butcher's initial books, I can see him learning the craft, and it slows me down to a point where I can't finish them.  I'm still stuck early in the second Dresden book, but I've read snatches of his later ones and like them well enough.  Lukyanenko, on the other hand... effin' dreamy.  Anton Gorodetsky is my hero, and King Gesar/Thomas the Rhymer is the most crack OTP ever, in the history of crack.

See I only know thomas the rhymer from folk songs, lol <.< will give Gorodetsky a try. I was thinking, you like like the Mary Renault books of Alexander the Great. Cerebral slash, in a way.

Sergei Lukyanenko is the author.  The -Watch series.  They made some fairly ****ty movies out of them.  And I tried reading Renault's books, because I have a huge boner for Alexander as a historical figure, and I was all, "What ees theese sheeet," ala your boss.

I got half way through the first Dresden files books. Thats because I'm now reading The stolen Throne/The calling. And I have a Paul Magrs book to read. I love his books set in Whitby. Brenda and Effie are the most unlikely gothic heroines ever :).

So its next on my list after that.

I prefered the book she wrote set during WW2, to be honest. Renaults was a bit of a chore to read, if I remember correction. Though I did like her treatment of Bagoas.

I just couldn't get into it.  I don't even remember why, now, it's been years and I've put it out of my head.

Don't get me wrong about the OTP joke in the -Watch series, there.  It's a throw away line where Anton gets a little pokey about Gesar's past with the head of another watch and Gesar is all, "We boned a few times.  It was beautiful and awesome.  Now STFU and get out of my office, n00b."  It's indicative of Lukyanenko's brand of crazy.

what are we all reading at the moment? I just finished "Memoirs of a Master Forger" by William Heaney and it was ace... All I can say is that it's like Dresden Files but British and has less hollywood gloss, sort of Gaiman without the crazy.

Switching between The Calling (Gaider, of course) and Seven Pillars of Wisdom (T. E. Lawrence), which is monstrous.  Neither is keeping my attention very well, because I caught the writing bug.  The last book I finished was... ::rummages::  Either Princess Bride or Anansi Boys, I can't remember which.  Which means it's been a while since I finished a book, damn.

I'm halfway through: "A game of Thrones" very impressive and "Black Witch Sanction" the Brit title for Kim Harrison's latest. it's making me a bit annoyed, who cares about Pierce? Why doesn't she just get on and do the nasty with Ivy?... Why did the "Alcatraz" scene last barely a few pages? Surely if you want to take the readers' feelings with you, you need a little more space than that...

I am ALWAYS reading discworld :).

At the moment I'm still reading The Engine's Child by Holly Phillips. It's taking me forever because I'm writing too much fanfic.

Hey, yeah, Night Watch, Day Watch, they are clever books where the characters play each other like chess masters... And he throws in some social comment.  I remember this story where Gorodetsky has been set up in a posh apartment in an exclusive part of Moscow but they can't afford to furnish it and neither can his neighbours, he has a toilet which he lets his neighbour who hasn't  got one use, in exchange for using his neighbour's shower...  Good stuff.

Hah, the moment Anton goomba'd that poor Daywatch guard in the first book, I knew he was my man.  I like a gritty book, and all of the -Watch books delivered.  I'd be hard pressed to say which was my favorite story (probably "A Common Enemy" or "A Common Destiny"), but "Unauthorized Personnel Permitted" actually moved me to tears. And playing "guess the High Other's true identity" was fun toward the end.  There are simply too many awesome moments in those books.

Tam Lin, and The Secret Country, both by Pamela C Dean. Or at least I was until I started writing fanfic. ROFL!

Oh and glittery vampires suck! I'm with Rhys, if it's doesn't burst into flames in the sun, it is a poncing git and not a real vampire:pinched:.  And for vapid writing could the whole series be more shallow?  The glossy black covers with the red ad white photographs are the best part about those books. I am addicted to the written word, so it takes a bit for me to toss a series aside.  I tried reading her books and gave them up as a lost cause.

See I'm kind of screwed. I have two very different audiences who read my stuff and I know I can never please both. One is MOAR ZEVRAN PLEASE and the other is MOAR DWARF POLITICS PLEASE and I've just been doing both when I feel it's needed. The last chapter was just kind of angst, tbh, but I needed to set up winding Missa up more so she can explode soon.

(I seriously have readers who scroll the sex parts and get to the "politics" so to speak, and probably vice verca with the Zevran readers.)

@ soignee - I'm with Gil, love the politics and love Zev

current reading: almost finished with "Oath of Fealty" by Elizabeth Moon - finally another Paksenarrion book. Still working on Kate Elliot's "Traitors' Gate." I'm caught up on Prachett, Gaiman, Sanderson, and Czerneda. Behind on Robin Hobb and I've given up on Goodkind. I think that's most of them.

Writing seems to interfere with my reading time, but I am at least managing to keep up with the fanfics I follow.
