Maria, I'm wondering what you posted as well, because I regularly read there and I didn't recognise you - which one was it?
Edited to add: I found it. Actually there have been a few nasty comments going up on SIB lately - not sure if it's the same poster but she was RUDE I think. There was even a negative comment to AMWT which I was gobsmacked at, because it was a criticism of character choices rather than of writing or editing and I think that sort of thing should be handled privately! Especially on a fic that sooo many people follow and love.
BTW, I really liked your story on SIB.

Hahaha. AMWT has lost me, so I'm not following the comments, but talk about awkward.
Miri: Ty for link. I think the comment should have been handled in pm, she handled it really well.

There's something to be said for constructive criticism and Klarabella was stating a justifiable opinion about AMWT, but the person who commented on Maria's was rude (and if they're also on this thread, then I'm not apologising for thinking that, no matter how bad my foot tastes!). There are ways of saying BTW, your punctuation could use a little beta-ing or you seem to have repeated this word a couple of times that aren't mean. Also no one is obliging you to read their fic! I get very snarky about people who write comments like "I didn't like this, it was dumb" because if you didn't like it the best way of demonstrating it is not to read any more of that person's fics...
Ranting a bit. Two nights of less than four hours sleep. Sorry if I'm muddled.

I read those comments and that person was rude. Like I said, two fingered salute (not you klarabella). I too get snarky when someone wants to tell me they could write my story better than me (and I don't mean punctuation).

Nope, the negative comment on AMWT was me..
In fact I feel terrible when trying to point out things that don't work in my opinion. Posting a critical comment is probably not so different from publishing a story. I often close my mail program or shut down the computer to keep me from going back and deleting everything ... I truly dread the reaction of the author.
I don't mean to be offensive but I have yet to find a safe way to post criticism without sounding arrogant or prodding, it is like walking an incredibly fine line. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.
As for AMWT, it used to be my favourite fic and I was probably one of those who actively recruited new readers by spreading the link and praising its quality. Believe me when I say that my disappointment is genuine and didn't simply snap at the authors just because. The latest romance-sub-plot twist felt extremely cheap and in no way at level with the quality of the writing I had praised before.
Others don't feel that way and some probably don't care as long as there is UST and smut looming around the corner, which is fair enough - just not my cup of tea.
I'm not sure if others are struggling about posting criticism as much as I do. Most people probably simply close the window, some really just snap. Maybe I'm providing some insight into the mind of a reviewer ... or maybe not, maybe I just like talking about myself.
I'll be on the other side soon enough ... I hope. If my inner critic will let me, he's not gentle with me either, want to slap the little nuisance. I bet some of you know that feeling. Don't hold back, it's natural.
PS: I might add that I'm ashamed about posting this, too. <_<

It can be a little harder when criticism is directed at plot, I think, because plot is usually the core of the story and no author wants to be told it's weak, rotten, or has little wormy things crawling inside it. Since a lot of the story hangs on the plot and its various twists and turns, and a lot of it is preconceived(?), hearing that it 'feels wrong' can be a serious blow to storyteller pride. That's not to say people shouldn't pipe up when they think it doesn't work, but once a chapter is published it's...published.
I second the "I love when things make sense, when they click." sentiment, btw. Random has its place, but the big story elements, IMO, should have some sort of lead up via the preceding pages of the story so that when the big stuff happens, even the stuff that is meant to be unexpected, it *works* and isn't out of the blue 'lolwut?'.

I'm pretty sure the authors of AMWT aren't going to go off and cry about their critics, though. I agree that the twist was a bit out of left field but I actually liked where it went as opposed to not so I guess it's just a matter of personal preference.
I've only ever gotten one criticism of my plot and the point the person made was actually quite valid and I've been working to rectify it in later chapters, although IMO the damage has already been done and I can't really undo it....

I've avoided saying anything about it in this thread, for fear I'd jinx myself... but I guess that didn't work.
This really sucks too 'cause I set up an Excel file where I've been copying my data into, so I can track my own data over multiple months. Oh well

I probably would have pmd with a "what's your justification for this" rather than a public posting, and that's just my personal way of going about things because I'm terrified of crushing people's egos.
There's value in providing meaningful critiques. Critiquing is an art form and I believe that you can't become a better writer unless you can effectively communicate what works and what doesn’t to another peer. Being able to objectively look at another person’s work gives you greater insight about your own.
While you want to be respectful and professional in your critiques, it doesn't mean that you should turn it into an ego-stroking love-fest. As an aspiring writer, I’d rather deal with the truth than be fed patronizing false hope. I’m a big girl and I try to understand why the criticism was given in the first place (some are valid and some are just mean). Then I use what I find valuable because even if I was wrong I’m still in control of the story. Just because the story’s out there doesn’t mean you can’t upload revisions or do a major rewrite (yeah, if I have time, I will).
Here's a good piece on doing critiques for you Sci-Fi and Fantasy writers: Hardcore Critique Guidelines
Anyway, going back to my cave now…and yes, I know I’ve just opened myself to a string of criticisms now. Bring it on as I’ve got no ego anyway. That’s what graduate school does to you.

FYI, you aren't the only one that feels that way about that fic. I have another person I talk to daily that used to love the fic and now dislikes it for all the reasons you outlined in your LJ post.
Honestly, I've felt a bit weird because it's such a fandom phenomena and I just have not been able to get into it. I feel like sometimes I'm the only person out there NOT reading the story.
