They're almost completely unheard of here. I think there was one in the eighties, around the same area. It was in the Eastern suburbs - near the beaches. About half an hour away from me (I'm an inner west girly). Actually destroyed a house of one of my friend's parents-in-law.

No one killed. I think a tornado here is probably something Americans would call "a strong wind". Apart from searing heat and bushfires in summer Australia is pretty mild, at least in the south.

Well, tornadoes are a pretty specific weather phenomenom.  I would assume you had some sort of cyclone, but it's might have been something like an F1.

I realize now that might not helpful if you don't know alot about tornadoes.  XD

On a higher note from yesterday (thanks for all the love) I did get to pimp my ride. My wheels needed to be replaced along with two tires. Now I have nice aluminum rims. And no they don't spin, which is sad. LOL!

Heheh. I love that show. We used to play a game in the staffroom on days when it all became too much: "Pimp my Maths Teacher."

Was pretty fun.

My knowledge of tornadoes consists of several watchings of "The Wizard of Oz". So yes, my ignorance is pretty much complete. However the news services reported it as a "tornado" rather than a water spout or a hurricane or a cyclone so I'm assuming that was what it was. It certainly looked twisty!

We have massive cyclones in the north on a regular basis (Tracy destroyed Darwin in the 1970s) but tornadoes are NOT common.

Maps and distances. I'm sure that this is something we all struggle with. Two questions, does anyone else have trouble reading the tiny city names on the map of Thedas? I have the one in the Prima guide, but I usually go to the wiki because I can blow it up more and see a little better- or maybe I'm just old and blind.

Distances, I have heard that the PnP has a distance scale in it - does anyone have it who can give me a mileage distance from one place to another so I can create a scale for the Thedas map? I know it is supposed to be 2 weeks from Orzammar to the circle Tower. Alistair mentions once (I think it is part of a conversation in camp) that the nearest Orlesian city is several weeks away (I'm assuming from Redcliff), also that Weisshaupt is more than a thousand miles from Ferelden. I've been guessing at distances to make a rough timeline for my story so far, but now that we are in the Free Marches with quite a bit of travel planned for the next 10-12 chapters I would like to have a better scale.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

If you join the 'We <3 Alistair' group, Milliat and SidheKate have both worked out the distances for a lot of places in Ferelden. That might help to work out further away.

There is a map in the 'Dragon Age' RPG boxset. Its better than the Prima one.

Hope it helps. :D

Thanks, I will check it out. Also, is the map in the PnP set a map of Thedas, or just Ferelden?

As MireliA said we plotted out some distances over in the We <3 Alistair group. SidheKate did an awesome job at guesstimates based on limited knowledge of how long it took to get somewhere. I got the Pen and Paper set 1, which only has a map of Ferelden, but it does have a distance scale. This is the link to both SidheKate and my calculations:

http://social.biowar...ssion/6818/&p=1

I also posted my measurements over on SiB, and still have some to and from distance requests to do over there.

Miliat, are most of your distances as the crow flies or following the roads?

Roads, where available. I figured it would be better to measure actual travelling distances.

Thanks - that was my guess by the discrepancies I was getting in measuring the distances "as the crow flies" to establish a scale for the Thedas map. It is also hard to be really accurate when measuring on the Thedas map because everything is so tiny - I have trouble even seeing the town icons even on the map I printed off of the wiki and I don't have a good way to enlarge it even more without using my scanner which seems to make everything blurry.

Here are a few quick calculations base on Miliat's work for anyone that is interested. I used her Denerim to Dragon's Peak and Denerim to Gwaren distances as they were not based on roads. All distances on land are as the crow flies. Sailing distances are taking the inside passage to the west of Brandal's Reach.

Denerim to Ostwick: 327 miles
Denerim to Kirkwall: 450 miles
Ostwick to Markham: 73 miles
Kirkwall to Markham: 354 miles
Markham to Ansburg: 127 miles

All distances are approximate

Highever to Ostagar: 354 miles (as the crow flies)

On roads based on Miliat's distances: 486 miles if you go via Lake Calenhad and then to Lothering

Here's a few more that might be useful, all are as the crow flies except sea route from Kirkwall to Cumberland.

Orzammar to Halamshiral: 200 miles
Halamshiral to Lydes: 100 miles
Lydes to Verchiel: 90 miles
Verchiel to Montsimmard: 127 miles
Ansburg to Starkhaven: 227 miles
Ansburg to Perivantium: 418 miles
Ansburg to Seleny: 163 miles
Ansburg to Antiva City: 181 miles
Seleny to Antiva City: 141 miles
Antiva City to Weisshaupt: 936 miles
Cumberland to Weisshaupt: 600 miles
Cumberland to Val Royeaux: 272 miles
Kirkwall to Cumberland (land): 209 miles
Kirkwall to Cumberland (sea): 263 miles

For those of you using horses for your characters a few numbers here:
Endurance riding record for the Tevis cup (100 miles through the Sierra Nevada mountains) is now about 10 hours.  You have no horse the next day - but it can be done.

A normal horse can gallop at about 40 miles an hour for a short distance, walking is about 4 miles an hour (the same as a person), a good trot covers about 10-12 miles an hour and can be sustained for a while.  Cantering runs the spectrum from a fast trot to a hand gallop which is close to 30 mph but the faster you go the more you will have to rest.

A fit horse can sustain 40-50 miles per day with reasonable terrain for awhile, they will loose weight and eventually will need to be rested for a significant period of time.  The Pony Express - using relay horses every 10 miles was able to deliver mail across the United States (approx 2000 miles) in about 10 days during its brief period of operation.

Problems with sustained fast riding can include the horse tying up (severe muscle cramps leading to muscle destruction), torn ligaments and tendons, and foot problems.

Try it before you condemn it.  Many of the writers here have put 100's of hours into their stories and there are a number of stories here and on FF.net that are as good or superior to many published books.  If you read Star Trek or Star Wars books you are a Fanfic reader. Posted Image

I know it's a lot of pages to trawl through, Arrtis, but the topic has morphed a fair bit since it was first posted and turned into a kind of Fanfic writers anonymous. And the original posting wasn't so much a trashing of fanfic in general, more of a complaint about how its sometimes difficult to write.

@it was a simple question, and if you had been following this thread, it hasn't been about Fanfic sucking for quite a while now. Sorry if the title is misleading. I was asking, not saying you shouldn't post.

And as to fairness, it is fine talk for someone who admits to not reading it, to have an opinion on something they know little about. As Tanith said above, there are some very good fanfics l just like there are very good books in the bookstore. There is also a lot of suckage in fanfic and a lot of sucking sewage at the bookstore. The only difference is the format.

THEN

Might I be so bold as to offer you to read some of the fanfic here , mine included.  And if you think it sucks ass, fine I can respect your opinion.  When you post it the next time, instead of scratching my head in wonderment at  a broad-brushed statement from someone who professes to have little knowledge about it.

Those who live under bridges and all....

Well said Gil.
And the thread never really was about fan fic sucking, except in the context that it is hard to write.  Much of our discussion has centered on the difficulty of staying in character when playing with someone else's toys.  That can acutally be a much harder task than keeping in character in an original fic.  On the flip side, the world is designed for you, so that part is much easier.
