Wait, fluff = comfort writing? Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about o_O

If so, we're in the same boat.  Fluff is often a part of H/C, which I'm very into, but I'm trying to shy from the H for this request.

I've started using this page a lot for fan fic terminology, since even though I write fan fiction I don't keep abreast of the lingo.

Here's what it has for fluff:

WAFF
Stands for "warm and fluffy feeling" or "warm and fuzzy feelings" and is applied to stories which are intended to invoke those feelings in  the reader, i.e., "feel good" stories. Also referred to as "fluff" or  "schmoop." Fluff often refers to a short story, chapter, or part of a  chapter in which readers get a soft, heartwarming feeling.

Fluff/schmoop
A genre in which the story is devoid of angst and takes on a mood of  light-hearted romance, see WAFF,
above. While the terms "fluff" and "schmoop" are interchangeable in the broad scope of fan fiction, individual fandoms tend to adopt one term or the other for this genre of fic.

So it looks like I was right... or maybe there's another dictionary out there. :) Although I can see where the 'comfort' aspect might fit in.

(Also gives new meaning to 'Schmooples'  from where I sit)

Fluff is so hard to write. I always have an urge to vomit. When I was writing the last chapter of Consequences (and Beginnings too, actually) I had to finish on a wedding scene and I just wrote... lalalala, and ran away with my fingers in my ears :).

It's not the fluff itself, it's the logic getting to the fluff.  Because I deplore the idea of fluff without some reasoning to it as much as I deplore the idea of writing PWP (my kmeme fills are notoriously overwrought with only a very tiny bit of actual pr0nz.  But people love them!  I don't get it).  And, you know, Zev's not the cuddliest guy in the world, brainwashed to think emotions are bad and all.

Fluff = light-hearted fun! Feel-good stuff! Readers come away from it feeling happy. :) It doesn't have to be sweet...I think I'd rather say 'playful'. Zev can do the flirty/playful routine verrrry well. Pick a chore (I was prompted by laundry) and just go for it. :)

That...

I wrote a fluff piece where Zevran took Cullen to a brothel.  It's way possible with him!

Seriously, usually the only way I can write fluff is with some comedy in it.  It's incredibly hard for me to write as well.  I so comfortably swim in the seas of woe that hopping into the lake of fuzzy is just a difficult transition to make.

Fluff with comedy, really the only way. And Tas I LOVED that story! "Zevran, I really hate you..." Priceless! I was falling out of my chair.

Hehe, I really liked the Zev/Cullen 'let's go to the brothel' story.

My problem is I apparently DO write some fluff and I don't realize that's what it is. :P

Although the one short I did write was absolutely all about the WAFF.

I wish I could write comedy better.

Apparently I also write fluff and I didn't have a clue til someone told me.. :). I took to putting 'Serious Fluff-factor' on my last fic on FF.net just to warn people! I didn't want them to gag on the first chapter ;)

But I don't fully agree with the fanfic terminology about fluff, I often think it comes with a certain amount of angst. Life ain't always sunshine & roses, especially if you're a grey warden.

Good point, MireliA. Maybe it's more that fluff encompasses that "chick flick" factor, if you'll pardon the expression. :D

I'm trying to work out if I've ever written fluff. Definately not in DDW, that's for sure. I think unhardened!Alistair is fluff by nature and perhaps I've written romantic fluff. He is like a puppy you just want ruffle around the ears in that regards.

in DDW I'm trying so hard to give Alistair a girlfriend, but alas it's kinda lore breaking. NUUUUUU HE WILL BE THE VIRGIN KINNGGGGG

That is so damn true.  I understand that people like happy stories and all that, but no one's life is free from sadness.

Nope, no life is free from angst. I think it is hardest to find an nice balance but with maybe a swaying towards more fluff, or more angst on the meter, depending on the story: some fluff, some comedy, some romance, some angst, some super angst (let's face it is the spice in the sauce), some arm punching and kicking ass (go Missa). But some stories go overboard one way or another.

The authors who post here, that I love to read, I think you all give them a nice balance. If I want more angst, I go for Tanith's and Tas's. If I am in a fluffy mood, hit others. I love variety. And bless you talented people you, you give it to me. : D

The balance is what I tried to do with 'Duty'.  It's got angst but then also has some fun moments in it too and what I like to think is a happy ending (or at least as happy an ending as I am capable of writing unless it involves a massage table... )

But yes, I can full well admit that 'Enemy' is a pit of woe atm.  I completely and totally blame Nathaniel Howe.

ROFL! But you do woe so well! Not everyone carries it off. I am not able to. I always seem to bring in the giggling. But you are a master. That is why your angsty pants have rhinestones and applique. And 'Enemy' is so good.

I love "Enemy" and I'm not an angst person as a rule. I only go to films if there are explosions in them. I figure real life is depressing enough, why make it more so? But you only get that real depth of emotion from an angsty piece so I have to sometimes dive into it - luckily as an English teacher I'm required to read and watch angst on a regular basis so I get my dose through that and usually enjoy it because it's such a novelty :).

Oh, my, Tasmen.  I'm not sure whether to laugh, cry or hide my eyes.  :)  Soooo silly!

(although I agree, Nathaniel has filled the role of sexypants quite nicely.  Nummy.)

Very true, if we're talking about comfort-fluff. I think you need context for that (be it angst or hurt).

If we're talking about generic-happiness-fluff it could just be a brief spot of character life where Times Are Good. Life isn't always sunshine and roses, but you do occasionally come across them. :)

I agree about Zev not being an overly cuddly guy...he needs reasons.

So here's an idea I had for comfort-fluff off the top of my head...make it injury/poison-related. Give Zev an excuse to put his arms around the Warden that needn't be obviously comforting (it's practical to prop up the injured in certain cases, and propping against Zevran himself could work ;)). Have him talk to the injured to keep them conscious until Morrigan/Wynne catches up with healing powerz. He could downlplay the severity of the wound, or say there will be a 'magnificent scar', or compare to some of his own...basically trying to keep the GW from going into shock or unconscious. But GW grogginess could be played with as well, of course.

ROFL! I had intended something similar in my Cousland origin, after the PC meets Zev. Something to build up to the feelings he had enough to say bugger off to Taliesin for. Okay, that I am thinking like Shadow makes me happy.

I managed some satisfactory fluff without resorting to H/C, but I make no secret of my love for H/C, so... I will probably be writing this next.

And very fine fluff it was.

I have a terrible time writing fluff, angst always seems to get in the way. I should follow Tell's example and try to write some just to see if I can do it.

LOL and I love your angst, you have the same kind of angsty pants that Tas has. *Glomps Tanith

And I have trouble writing pure fluff, I did for two chapters in my epic, and it was so hard to do. And I have trouble doing all angsty, though I have in my epic, and I managed not to put humor in it.

I tend to break up my angst with funny, I can't help it.
